Aneurysmal Bone Cyst of Capitate.

Primary aneurysmal bone cyst of the capitate is a rare disorder and it occurs commonly in the metacarpal bones. There are only three documented cases in literature of its occurrence in carpal bones. We report one such case of a 21-year-old male serving soldier, its clinical presentation, imaging findings, and treatment by curettage and bone grafting.

[An occult fracture of the capitate bone].

BACKGROUND: Evaluating patients with wrist injuries is diagnostically challenging. Physical examination alone is not sufficient for establishing a diagnosis and fractures of the wrist region are not always visible on x-rays. CASE DESCRIPTION: In this article, we present a case of a patient who had sustained trauma to the wrist and was taken care of at the emergency department. The mechanism of trauma and clinical findings strongly indicated a fracture of the scaphoid bone. No abnormality was visible on x-rays; the fracture was treated by casting nonetheless. On a CT scan performed later, ther

Curettage without bone grafting for a simple bone cyst in the capitate.

PURPOSE: To review the outcome after intralesional curettage without bone grafting for simple bone cysts in the capitate. METHODS: Records of 12 hands in 10 consecutive females aged 14 to 21 (mean, 17.5) years who underwent intralesional curettage without bone grafting for a simple bone cyst in the capitate were reviewed. Clinical outcome was evaluated using the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) questionnaire. Wrist/hand pain was assessed using the modified Mayo wrist score. Patient satisfaction, range of motion, and grip strength were self-evaluated as improved, unchanged, or

Cortical and trabecular bone structure of the hominoid capitate.

Morphological variation in the hominoid capitate has been linked to differences in habitual locomotor activity due to its importance in movement and load transfer at the midcarpal joint proximally and carpometacarpal joints distally. Although the shape of bones and their articulations are linked to joint mobility, the internal structure of bones has been shown experimentally to reflect, at least in part, the loading direction and magnitude experienced by the bone. To date, it is uncertain whether locomotor differences among hominoids are reflected in the bone microarchitecture of the capitate.

[Pseudarthrosis of the capitate bone. Report of 2 cases].

Well protected by its central position and richly vascularized, the capitate bone is rarely involved in posttraumatic pseudarthrosis. Drawing on two cases, the present study will describe anatomy, aetiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and therapy of pseudarthroses of the capitate. Restoration of the physiological capitate height was achieved in both cases with a corticocancellous bone graft from the iliac crest which led on to bony union within three months.

Carpal synovitis with capitate bone tuberculosis in a child.

We present a 10-year-old boy with 2-month duration non-traumatic wrist pain and inflammatory signs. Due to elevated inflammatory markers on blood tests, with an increase in radiocarpal and intercarpal joints synovial fluid and no bony lesions, the patient was submitted to wrist arthrocentesis for the suspicion of septic arthritis. The patient did not improve on conventional treatment, however. An MRI showed synovitis around the carpus and a lytic lesion of the capitate bone due to osteomyelitis. A biopsy was able to identify the causative agent as Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and the patient wa

Chondroblastoma with secondary aneurysmal bone cyst of the capitate.

Chondroblastoma is a benign tumor that typically arises in the epiphysis of a long bone. There have been only 2 reported cases of chondroblastoma involving the capitate. This is the first report of chondroblastoma with secondary aneurysmal bone cyst involving the capitate. A 33-year-old man presented with a 3-year history of pain and swelling of the right wrist. Radiography as well as computed tomography showed a radiolucent area and no matrix calcification within the capitate. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a homogeneous signal that was low on T1-weighted images and high on T2-weighted i

Idiopathic avascular necrosis of the capitate bone: a new case report.

Idiopathic avascular necrosis (AVN) of the capitate bone is an important, although rare, cause of spontaneous onset of wrist pain. Most cases involve direct or indirect trauma. Only a few reports of idiopathic avascular necrosis have been published. We present a case report of a 32-year-old woman who presented with a chief complaint of a left wrist pain, swelling and loss of all ranges of motions for approximately 1 year. She had no history of prior wrist trauma or steroid use. Laboratory testing for systemic disease or infection were negative. Diagnosis of avascular necrosis of the capitate h

Stress fracture of capitate bone-A case report of an unusual fracture.

INTRODUCTION: The capitate is the largest, most central bone and the first to ossify in the wrist. It has a well-protected anatomic location, making traumatic or stress fractures extremely rare in clinical practice. Isolated fractures of the capitate bone are very uncommon and often without displacement due to the great stability provided by the intracarpal ligaments. PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: This study aimed to report a case of isolated stress fracture of the capitate related to the work activity of a mechanic. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 23-year-old patient complaining of pain and sw

Giant Cell Tumor of Capitate with Secondary Aneurysmal Bone Cyst: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Giant cell tumors (GCTs) of the carpal bones are rare. GCTs of the hand tend to be aggressive, could result in multifocal presentation, and have a high rate of recurrence. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report a rare case of GCT of the capitate with secondary aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) in a 40-year-old man. The patient presented with complaints of pain and swelling over his right wrist since 6 months. Radiographs showed the presence of a lytic lesion in the capitate. Magnetic resonance imaging scanning revealed a well-defined, lobulated, multiseptate lytic lesion involving the entire capita

Postpartum Treatment of Metastatic Recurrent Giant Cell Tumor of Capitate Bone of Wrist.

Giant cell tumors (GCTs) are aggressive benign lesions that occur in the bone epiphysis. They are most often found in the long bones of the lower extremities. Wrist bone involvement is rare, capitate bone involvement exceedingly rare. Treatment in the wrist usually consists of excision, local adjuvant treatment, and cementing and/or bone grafting. GCTs also metastasize to the lungs; pulmonary lesions are excised and systemic therapy provided. We present the case of a 19-year-old woman with GCT of the capitate bone. After initial excision and cementing, the GCT recurred with lung metastases dur

Bone scintigraphy in slipped capital femoral epiphysis.

Tc-99m diphosphonate bone scans were performed on 11 children with slipped capital femoral epiphysis. On pinhole hip images, seven hips in seven patients had increased radionuclide uptake in the physis and adjacent proximal femoral metaphysis where the slip had occurred. Three hips in three patients had decreased radionuclide uptake in the femoral head on the side of the slipped epiphysis, indicating compromise of the femoral head blood supply. Three or more months following internal fixation, three children had scintigraphy that showed loss of the usual focal uptake in the physis and adjacent

Aneurysmal bone cyst of the capitate: case report and a review emphasizing local recurrence.

We herein report the case of a 15-year-old boy with cystic lesion of the capitate. Magnetic resonance imaging showed that the lesion demonstrated homogenous low-intensity on T1-weighted imaging and homogenous high intensity on T2-weighted imaging. The lesion was treated by curettage and autologous bone-grafting. The histological specimen from the cystic wall showed loose fibrous tissue with capillary vessels and extravasated red blood cells. The cystic lesion was filled with blood, suggesting that the cystic lesion was actually an aneurysmal bone cyst. The present case is the second reported c
