Mineral Carbonation for Carbon Sequestration: A Case for MCP and MICP.

Mineral carbonation is a prominent method for carbon sequestration. Atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) is trapped as mineral carbonate precipitates, which are geochemically, geologically, and thermodynamically stable. Carbonate rocks can originate from biogenic or abiogenic origin, whereby the former refers to the breakdown of biofragments and the latter precipitation out of water. Carbonates can also be formed through biologically controlled mechanisms (BCMs), biologically mediated mechanisms (BMMs), and biologically induced mechanisms (BIMs). Microbial carbonate precipitation (MCP) is a BMM oc

Tropical forest carbon sequestration accelerated by nitrogen.

Understanding forest carbon sequestration is crucial for predicting and managing the carbon cycle, yet we lack evidence for whether, when and how the carbon sink in tropical forests recovering from land use change is nutrient limited. Here we show how the tropical forest recovery rate responds to experimental nutrient manipulation over a secondary succession gradient in a naturally recovering Central American landscape. Nutrient limitation of aboveground biomass accumulation shifts from strong nitrogen limitation in young forests to no evidence of nitrogen or phosphorus limitation in older sec

Dual carbon sequestration with photosynthetic living materials.

Natural ecosystems efficiently sequester CO2 but containing and controlling living systems remains challenging. Here, we engineer a photosynthetic living material for dual CO2 sequestration that leverages biomass production and insoluble carbonate formation via microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP). To achieve this, we immobilize photosynthetic microorganisms within a printable polymeric network. Digital design and fabrication of the living structures ensure sufficient light access and nutrient supply to encapsulated cyanobacteria, enabling long-term culture for over a year. We sh

Impact of cyanobacteria on zinc and carbon sequestration in hydrous magnesium carbonates.

Mineral carbonation has the potential to permanently sequester CO2 in stable carbonate minerals, mimicking the natural precipitation of Ca- or Mg-rich carbonates. These minerals are found in ultramafic rocks and mine wastes, which also contain metals that are crucial resources for renewable energy technologies. This study aims to better characterize the mechanisms and quantify the potential of cyanobacterium (Gloeocapsa sp.) for hydrous Mg carbonate (HMC) precipitation sequestering both CO2 and heavy metals such as Zn. The results show that Zn removal mechanisms depend on solution pH and bacte

Macrophyte Restoration Promotes Lake Microbial Carbon Pump to Enhance Aquatic Carbon Sequestration.

Macrophyte-based lake restoration has successfully transitioned lakes from turbid conditions dominated by phytoplankton to a more natural, clear state; however, its impact on microbial carbon pump-mediated dissolved organic carbon (DOM) storage and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the aquatic ecosystem remains largely unexplored. Through a year-long field study, we conducted a comparative analysis of two alternative habitats within the same lake-restored and unrestored areas. Results demonstrated that restoration not only substantially decreases nutrient levels and algal blooms-evidenced by o

Water challenges for geologic carbon capture and sequestration.

Carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) has been proposed as a means to dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions with the continued use of fossil fuels. For geologic sequestration, the carbon dioxide is captured from large point sources (e.g., power plants or other industrial sources), transported to the injection site and injected into deep geological formations for storage. This will produce new water challenges, such as the amount of water used in energy resource development and utilization and the "capture penalty" for water use. At depth, brine displacement within formations, storage r

Enhanced basalt weathering for CO2 sequestration: Phase dissolution rates, carbon sequestration mechanisms and practical application.

Enhanced rock weathering, particularly using basalt, is a promising method for atmospheric CO2 reduction. However, the complex mineral phases of basalt and challenges in post-application soil separation hinder experimental determination of phase-specific dissolution rates in real-world settings. This study innovatively combines magnetic separation and XRD-Rietveld full-spectrum fitting to isolate basalt from soil and quantify post-weathering phase changes. The normalized dissolution rates of labradorite, augite, hortonolite, ilmenite, and amorphous phases in soil were determined as 4.33 × 10-6

Beryllium carbonate: a model compound for highest capacity carbon sequestration chemistry.

Beryllium carbonate has the highest capacity to bind and release the greenhouse gas CO2 compared to amines, ionic liquids, CaCO3 or Li2CO3. The thermodynamic equilibrium for CO2 and BeO from BeCO3 is calculated. TGA of BeCO3 is used to determine the stepwise mechanism of its CO2 release, and the low melting point Li/Sr/BeCO3 is demonstrated.

Blue carbon ecosystems for hypoxia solution: how to maximize their carbon sequestration potential.

Blue carbon refers to the carbon captured and stored by coastal and oceanic ecosystems, such as mangroves, seagrasses, and salt marshes. These ecosystems are vital for biodiversity and play a crucial role in sequestering carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, helping to mitigate climate change, which can also provide economic value by evaluating payment for ecosystem services (PES) schemes. Additionally, they help regulate dissolved organic carbon, mitigate eutrophication, and improve water quality, reducing the impact of global deoxygenation. Conserving and restoring blue carbon ecosystems are v

Light-Mediated Enhancement of Carbon Sequestration in Engineered Spathiphyllum.

Carbon sequestration is essential to mitigate climate change and atmospheric carbon dioxide levels. Utilizing indoor plants, such as Spathiphyllum (Peace Lily), is desirable for sustainable living, thanks to their carbon sequestration characteristics and ability to remove air toxins and adjust humidity. In this study, a luminescent energy storage material, calcium sulfide doped with europium and dysprosium (CaS:Eu,Dy) phosphor, was synthesized and applied to the surface of Spathiphyllum (Peace Lily) leaves to improve its photosynthetic efficiency and carbon sink potential. Integrated bioprocess for carbon dioxide sequestration and methanol production.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) poses a significant threat, contributing to global warming and climate change. This study focused on isolating efficient CO2-reducing methanogens and methanotrophs for converting methane into methanol. Samples from diverse regions in India were collected and processed, yielding 82 methanogenic and 48 methylotrophic isolates. Methanogenic isolate M11 produced a higher amount of methane, reaching 2.9 mol L-1 on the sixth day of incubation at 35 °C, pH 7.0, and CO2:H2 (80:20) as feeding rates. Under optimized conditions, isolate M11 effectively converted 8.3 mol CO2 to 7.9 mo

Enhanced carbon sequestration in marginal seas through bacterial transformation.

Labile organic carbon is a highly dynamic component of the marine carbon pool, traditionally thought to be respired within hours to days into carbon dioxide (CO2) by bacteria, although there is a paucity of direct observational evidence. Here, we report that a significant portion of labile particulate organic carbon (POC) in marginal seas is converted into bacterial material. By exploiting D/L-amino acids, we trace the origins of labile POC and its transformation into bacterial POC in the marginal seas off Eastern China. Our results indicate that labile POC primarily originates from autochthon

Ethiopia's green legacy initiative enhances carbon stock and carbon dioxide sequestration across diverse landscapes.

Ethiopia's Green Legacy Initiative (GLI) is one of the world's largest landscape restoration programs, yet its contribution to carbon sequestration across diverse land uses and agroecological zones remains poorly quantified. This study assessed the effects of GLI interventions on biomass accumulation, carbon storage (CS), and carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e) sequestration across 21 districts representing major implementation regions of Ethiopia. A total of 8,209 plants belonging to 90 species and 42 families were measured across four land-use types and eight management practices. Aboveground b

Carbon dioxide sequestration using NaHSO4 and NaOH: A dissolution and carbonation optimisation study.

The use of NaHSO4 to leach out Mg fromlizardite-rich serpentinite (in form of MgSO4) and the carbonation of CO2 (captured in form of Na2CO3 using NaOH) to form MgCO3 and Na2SO4 was investigated. Unlike ammonium sulphate, sodium sulphate can be separated via precipitation during the recycling step avoiding energy intensive evaporation process required in NH4-based processes. To determine the effectiveness of the NaHSO4/NaOH process when applied to lizardite, the optimisation of the dissolution and carbonation steps were performed using a UK lizardite-rich serpentine. Sequestration of Soil Organic and Inorganic Carbon by Dual-Enzymatically Induced Carbonate Precipitation.

Urease-induced carbonate precipitation in calcareous soil holds great potential for soil inorganic carbon (SIC) formation and soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration. However, this process is limited by the slow hydration of carbon dioxide, which can be accelerated by carbonic anhydrase (CA). In this study, we present a novel approach where dual-enzyme (urease and CA) induced carbonate precipitation promotes the synergetic sequestration of SIC and SOC. We selected humic substance, such as humic acid (HA), as a natural SOC to investigate its role in regulating SIC formation and its fate in the

A greenhouse-scale photosynthetic microbial bioreactor for carbon sequestration in magnesium carbonate minerals.

A cyanobacteria dominated consortium collected from an alkaline wetland located near Atlin, British Columbia, Canada accelerated the precipitation of platy hydromagnesite [Mg5(CO3)4(OH)2·4H2O] in a linear flow-through experimental model wetland. The concentration of magnesium decreased rapidly within 2 m of the inflow point of the 10-m-long (∼1.5 m(2)) bioreactor. The change in water chemistry was monitored over two months along the length of the channel. Carbonate mineralization was associated with extra-cellular polymeric substances in the nutrient-rich upstream portion of the bioreactor, wh

Harnessing the biomolecular mechanisms of marine biomineralisation for carbon sequestration.

Anthropogenic activities, primarily fossil fuel combustion, have increased atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) levels and climate change effects. Carbon dioxide removal (CDR) is now widely accepted as essential in all pathways to limit global warming in line with the Paris Agreement. Biomineralisation offers compelling and promising natural pathways for durable carbon sequestration by converting CO₂ into stable carbonate minerals, a process driven by a suite of biomolecules within bio-calcifying organisms. These processes are orchestrated by biomolecules such as proteins (e.g., carbonic anhydrase

Long-term viability of carbon sequestration in deep-sea sediments.

Sequestration of carbon dioxide in deep-sea sediments has been proposed for the long-term storage of anthropogenic CO2 that can take advantage of the current offshore infrastructure. It benefits from the negative buoyancy effect and hydrate formation under conditions of high pressure and low temperature. However, the multiphysics process of injection and postinjection fate of CO2 and the feasibility of subseabed disposal of CO2 under different geological and operational conditions have not been well studied. With a detailed study of the coupled processes, we investigate whether storing CO2 int
