Can carbonated water support weight loss?

BACKGROUND: Carbonated water has been reported to induce satiety, gastric motility and lower serum glucose concentrations, but the mechanisms remain unclear. METHODS: This report explores the physiological effects of carbonated water, referencing a study published in 2004 on the mechanisms of hypoglycaemia induced by haemodialysis. RESULTS: Upon consumption of carbonated water, carbon dioxide (CO2) is absorbed into the bloodstream, and converted into bicarbonate by the enzyme carbonic anhydrase in erythrocytes. This process increases intracellular pH, stimulating anaerobic glycolysis in eryt

Effects of carbonated water on functional dyspepsia and constipation.

OBJECTIVE: The effects of carbonated beverages on the gastrointestinal tract have been poorly investigated. Therefore, this study aims to assess the effect of carbonated water intake in patients with functional dyspepsia and constipation. METHODS: Twenty-one patients with dyspepsia and secondary constipation were randomized into two groups in a double-blind fashion. One group (10 subjects) drank carbonated water and the other (11 subjects) tap water for almost 15 days. Patients were evaluated for dyspepsia and constipation scores, and underwent a satiety test by a liquid meal, radionuclide ga

Immiscible metamorphic water and methane fluids preserved in carbonated eclogite.

Subduction zones metamorphic fluids are pivotal in geological events such as volcanic eruptions, seismic activity, mineralization, and the deep carbon cycle. However, the mechanisms governing carbon mobility in subduction zones remain largely unresolved. Here we present the first observations of immiscible H2O-CH4 fluids coexisting in retrograde carbonated eclogite from the Western Tianshan subduction zone, China. We identified two types of fluid inclusions in host ankerite and amphibole, as well as in garnet and omphacite. Type-1 inclusions are water-rich with CH4 vapor, whereas Type-2 are CH

Neurobiological and psychophysical mechanisms underlying the oral sensation produced by carbonated water.

Carbonated drinks elicit a sensation that is highly sought after, yet the underlying neural mechanisms are ill-defined. We hypothesize that CO(2) is converted via carbonic anhydrase into carbonic acid, which excites lingual nociceptors that project to the trigeminal nuclei. We investigated this hypothesis using three methodological approaches. Electrophysiological methods were used to record responses of single units located in superficial laminae of the dorsomedial aspect of trigeminal subnucleus caudalis (Vc) evoked by lingual application of carbonated water in anesthetized rats. After pretr

Effect of carbonated water on esophageal high-resolution manometry metrics: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: With the introduction of high-resolution manometry (HRM), esophageal motility disorders (EMDs) are now better understood, allowing for a more effective treatment. Carbonated water use was suggested to change esophageal motility. Hence, this study sought to determine the effect of carbonated water on esophagus HRM. In this retrospective study, we used manometry to evaluate the effects of carbonated water on esophageal movement and to investigate the potential impact on the diagnosis and interpretation of motility disorders. METHODS: We enrolled 110 patients who underwent HRM examin

Carpometacarpal Osteoarthritis Pain of the Thumb Can Be Relieved by Commercial Beverage Carbonated Water.

Thumb carpometacarpal (CMC) arthropathy pain is treated using carbonated water-a commercially available beverage. The right hand (affected side) was bathed once daily in carbonated beverage water (37°C) for 20 min. Prior to treatment, the visual analogue scale score of pain was 73 mm; 1 week after the treatment, it was 0 mm. Commercial carbonated water immersion was effective for thumb CMC arthropathy pain. Commercial carbonated water is inexpensive and easy to obtain, making it suitable for home carbonation therapy.

The Pressor Response to the Drinking of Cold Water and Cold Carbonated Water in Healthy Younger and Older Adults.

Purpose: Water drinking has been proposed for the treatment of orthostatic hypotension because it can increase blood pressure in patients. This study aimed to investigate whether drinking water with a cold or carbonation stimulus would cause a more effective pressor response, and whether it would be greater in older than in younger adults. Methods: We assessed blood pressure and heart rate from non-invasive arterial pressure (a volume-clamp method) and type II electrocardiography in 13 healthy young adults (6 females, 7 males; mean age, 19.9 ± 1.1 years) and nine healthy older adults (all fema

Ingesting carbonated water post-exercise in the heat transiently ameliorates hypotension and enhances mood state.

The objective was to assess if post-exercise ingestion of carbonated water in a hot environment ameliorates hypotension, enhances cerebral blood flow and heat loss responses, and positively modulates perceptions and mood states. Twelve healthy, habitually active young adults (five women) performed 60 min of cycling at 45% peak oxygen uptake in a hot climate (35°C). Subsequently, participants consumed 4°C carbonated or non-carbonated (control) water (150 and 100 mL for males and females regardless of drink type) at 20 and 40 min into post-exercise periods. Mean arterial pressure decreased post-

Effect of Mine Water Environment on Durability of Solid Backfilling Based on Carbonated Coal-Based Waste.

The durability of solid backfilling based on carbonated coal-based waste (CCBW) under mine water environments is critical for its engineering feasibility. This study investigates the deterioration mechanisms of CCBW exposed to acid solution (Acid W), alkaline solution (Alkaline W), and mine water (Mine W) through hydrochemical analysis, XRD, and SEM. Results reveal that the uniaxial compressive strength of CCBW decreased by 10.05, 3.93, and 1.62% after 28 days of immersion in the groups, respectively. Acid conditions induced CaCO3 dissolution and gypsum formation, while alkaline environments t

Involvement of capsaicin-sensitive nerves in the initiation of swallowing evoked by carbonated water in anesthetized rats.

Capsaicin powerfully evokes the swallowing reflex and is a known therapeutic agent for improving dysphagia and preventing aspiration pneumonia. However, the role of capsaicin-sensitive nerves in the initiation of swallowing evoked by various natural stimuli remains unclear. To explore this question, we blocked laryngeal capsaicin-sensitive nerves following the coapplication of QX-314 and capsaicin (QX/Cap), and investigated the effects on swallowing evoked by mechanical and chemical stimulation in anesthetized rats. Swallows were evoked by capsaicin, carbonated water (CW), distilled water (DW)

Randomized trial of carbonated water consumption on snacking behavior, alcohol intake, and health indices in healthy Japanese adults.

Lifestyle-related diseases associated with obesity remain a major public health concern in Japan, in which eating and drinking habits play a critical role. Energy-free carbonated water has been suggested to promote sensations of fullness and may serve as a low-caloric alternative to caloric foods or alcoholic beverages; however, evidence regarding its sustained effects on habitual behaviors and objective health indices is limited. In this randomized, open-label, placebo-controlled, parallel-group trial, 46 healthy Japanese adults (aged 20-64 years; body mass index BMI, kg/m², 23.0-<30.0) were

Effect of carbonated water on cerebral blood flow in the frontal region: a study using near-infrared spectroscopy.

INTRODUCTION: Carbonated water (CarbW) affects the swallowing function associated with the action of the brainstem. In addition, CarbW ingestion promotes mean blood flow in the middle cerebral artery, which is associated with blood flow to the frontal and temporal lobes. In this milieu, studies regarding the effect of drinking CarbW on brain activity are of significance. In the present study, we compared the changes in cerebral blood flow in the frontal region before and after the ingestion of CarbW or uncarbonated water (SW). METHODS: Near-infrared spectroscopy was used to continuously measu

Computational studies of liquid water and diluted water in carbon tetrachloride.

Molecular dynamics simulations were carried out to study solvent effects on the energetic and dynamical properties of water molecules in liquid water and in carbon tetrachloride (CCl4). In these studies, the free-energy profiles or potentials of mean force (PMF) for water dimers in both solvents were computed. The computed PMF results showed a stable minimum near 3 A for the O-O separation, with a minimum free energy of about -2.8 kcal/mol in CCl4, as compared to a value of -0.5 kcal/mol in liquid water. The difference in free energy in water as compared to that in CCl4 was expected and is the

Dynamics of dilute water in carbon tetrachloride.

A dilute solution of water in a hydrophobic solvent, such as carbon tetrachloride (CCl4), presents an opportunity to study the rotational properties of water without the complicating effects of hydrogen bonds. We report here the results of theoretical, experimental, and semiempirical studies of a 0.03 mole percent solution of water in CCl4. It is shown that for this solution there are negligible water-water interactions or water-CCl4 interactions; theoretical and experimental values for proton NMR chemical shifts (deltaH) are used to confirm the minimal interactions between water and the CCl4.
