Carboxyhemoglobin as biomarker of prematurity complications.

BACKGROUND: Carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) is considered a biomarker of oxidative stress and previous studies suggest a correlation between its blood level and prematurity complications. Our aim in this study was to assess the correlation between COHb levels and the risk for bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH), and retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). METHODS: We retrospectively studied 178 preterm infants with gestational age of 27.0 ± 1.5 weeks, among which 121 (68 %) had BPD, 43 (24 %) IVH, and 33 (19 %) ROP. COHb levels measured during the first seven days of life w

[Value of carboxyhemoglobin in the diagnosis of neonatal jaundice].

OBJECTIVE: To study the value of carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) in the diagnosis of neonatal jaundice. METHODS: This study consisted of 189 patients with neonatal jaundice due to hemolytic disease (n=75), infectious disease (n=52), intracranial hemorrhage (n=32) and breast-milk feeding (n=30). One hundred and forty-two neonates without pathological jaundice that were gestational age, postnatal age- and birth weight-matched were used as the Control group. The level of arterial capillary blood COHb was detected by a 270 CO-oximeter connected to an 800 series system. Total serum bilirubin (STB) conten

Carboxyhemoglobin measurements in the diagnosis of ABO hemolytic disease.

To assess hemolysis in hyperbilirubinemic infants with ABO isoimmunization, we measured the carboxyhemoglobin (HbCO) concentrations in full-term infants with ABO isoimmunization during the first week of life. Two groups of infants, ABO compatible (n = 34) and ABO incompatible (n = 30), were further divided into two groups with and without hyperbilirubinemia. All the infants from ABO incompatible pregnancies showed a positive indirect Coombs' test. The groups with hyperbilirubinemia included infants with maximum serum total bilirubin levels about 15 mg/dL and infants treated by phototherapy or

Immobilized Neuroglobin Scavenges Carbon Monoxide From Circulating Carboxyhemoglobin.

Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning is responsible for around 50,000 emergency department visits per year in the United States alone. Currently, there is no available antidote for CO poisoning. We have previously developed an antidotal therapy based on an engineered hemeprotein, human neuroglobin (Ngb-H64Q-CCC). Intravenous infusion of Ngb-H64Q-CCC removes CO from circulating red blood cells and improves survival in a lethal CO poisoning mouse model. However, the infusion of heme-containing proteins has inherent heme toxicity risks that may limit the dose that can be used safely without liver or ki

Immobilized neuroglobin scavenges carbon monoxide from circulating carboxyhemoglobin.

Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning is responsible for around 50,000 emergency department visits per year in the U.S. alone. With the present standard of care, persistent neurological sequelae occur in ~30-40% of severe CO poisoning cases. Currently, there is no available targeted molecular antidote for CO poisoning. In previous work, we have developed an antidotal therapy for CO poisoning based on an engineered hemeprotein, human neuroglobin (Ngb-H64Q-CCC). Critically High Carboxyhemoglobin Level following Extensive Hysteroscopic Myomectomy.

Studies have demonstrated that during hysteroscopic myomectomy with bipolar diathermy, carbon monoxide is produced and enters the patient's circulation. However, little is known regarding the immediate or long-term sequelae of transient rises in carboxyhemoglobin levels during hysteroscopic surgery. This paper aims to suggest recommendations for acute evaluation, management, patient counseling, and future research. We present a case of a 36-year-old woman (Gravida 0, Para 0) with abnormal uterine bleeding-leiomyoma and resultant anemia, undergoing hysteroscopic resection of a large submucous m

Admission Carboxyhemoglobin: Is It a Marker for Burn Patient Outcomes?

BACKGROUND: Carbon monoxide is a gas produced by the combustion of hydrocarbon products that binds to heme molecules, 240 times more than oxygen, producing carboxyhemoglobin (COHb). As a result of its high affinity, there is shift of the oxyhemoglobin dissociation curve, compromising oxygen transport and delivery to tissues. Our study aim was to evaluate COHb elevation on admission as a predictor of worse outcomes in burn patients. METHODS: This is a 10-year retrospective review of the American Burn Association Burn Registry from 2002 to 2011. We stratified the patients into 2 groups: adult p

The Role of Methemoglobin and Carboxyhemoglobin in COVID-19: A Review.

Following the outbreak of a novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) associated with pneumonia in China (Corona Virus Disease 2019, COVID-19) at the end of 2019, the world is currently facing a global pandemic of infections with SARS-CoV-2 and cases of COVID-19. Since severely ill patients often show elevated methemoglobin (MetHb) and carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) concentrations in their blood as a marker of disease severity, we aimed to summarize the currently available published study results (case reports and cross-sectional studies) on MetHb and COHb concentrations in the blood of COVID-19 patients. Carboxyhemoglobin and its correlation to disease severity in cirrhotics.

GOAL: To assess the correlation of serum carboxyhemoglobin (CO-Hb) to severity of liver disease as compared with Model for End Stage Liver Disease (MELD) score, Child Pugh score, and clinical parameters. BACKGROUND: There are 2 sources of carbon monoxide (CO) in humans, exogenous sources include those such as tobacco smoke and inhaled motor vehicle exhaust. The endogenous source is via the heme-oxygenase pathway, in which a heme molecule is broken down into biliverdin with release of an iron (Fe) and CO molecule. Normal serum CO-Hb levels in nonsmokers is 0% to 1.5% and 4% to 9% in smokers. A

Carboxyhemoglobin levels in patients with cocaine-related chest pain.

Carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) levels were measured in patients who came to an emergency department complaining of acute chest pain. For subjects not receiving prior oxygen therapy, those with cocaine-related chest pain (n = 10) had a higher mean COHb level than a comparison group (n = 28) with nonischemic chest pain (4.50 +/- 2.40 vs 2.73 +/- 0.66; p < 0.05). Four of the seven (57 percent) who smoked crack had COHb levels greater than 4.5 percent, while only one of six (17 percent) smokers of only tobacco had such a level. These findings suggest an additional mechanism, the formation of COHb, which

Carboxyhemoglobin levels in Kenyan children with Plasmodium falciparum malaria.

Heme oxygenase (HO) is thought to be induced in severe malaria, but the pathophysiologic consequences have not been examined. It is induced by hemolysis, oxidative stress, and inflammation. It degrades heme, producing carbon monoxide (CO), which causes elevated levels of carboxyhemoglobin (COHb). In a prospective study of 1,520 children admitted to a Kenyan district hospital, COHb levels were no higher in children with malaria than with other infections. The COHb levels in children with severe malarial anemia were higher than in other children with malaria, but significantly lower than in chil

Carboxyhemoglobin formation due to carbon monoxide exposure in rats.

The Coburn-Forster-Kane equation (CFKE) is a well-tested model for prediction of carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) formation due to carbon monoxide (CO) exposure in humans. There have been few and relatively poorly tested attempts to implement a CFKE for rats. Such an implementation is of interest because many experiments on the effects of CO in rats were done without measuring COHb. To extrapolate from rats to humans requires a rat version of the CFKE. Rats were exposed to 150, 250, 500, and 1000 ppm CO for up to 240 min. Blood gases and COHb were measured. A CFKE was implemented for rats by using par

Carboxyhemoglobin and depletion of blood oxygen in sleeping elephant seals.

An exceptionally large blood O2 store underlies the remarkable dive performance of elephant seals. However, elevated carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) concentrations in these seals complicate estimations of blood O2 content and O2 depletion rates, and may also affect monitoring of brain oxygenation in seals with new non-invasive near-infrared (NIR) recorders. Using hemoximetry analyses of blood samples during sleep apneas of juvenile northern elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris), we constructed in vivo Hill plot equations and O2-Hb dissociation curves (ODCs). We found: (a) COHb and methemoglobin (b

Carboxyhemoglobin as a diagnostic and prognostic biomarker of hemolytic anemias in dogs.

BACKGROUND: Endogenous production of carbon monoxide during hemoglobin metabolism leads to the formation of carboxyhemoglobin. Carboxyhemoglobin concentration is abnormally high in humans with hemolytic anemia (HA). HYPOTHESIS: Measurement of carboxyhemoglobin concentration can discriminate HA from other forms of anemia. ANIMALS: Twenty-seven dogs with HA (immune-mediated HA, n = 22; microangiopathic HA, n = 5), 27 dogs with non-HA (kidney disease, n = 14; immune-mediated thrombocytopenia, [n = 6]; miscellaneous, n = 7) and 24 nonanemic control dogs. METHODS: Prospective cohort study. Carbo

Carboxyhemoglobin and blood cyanide concentrations in relation to aviation accidents.

INTRODUCTION: It is important in aviation accident investigations to determine if a fire occurred during flight or after the crash and to establish the source(s) of the toxic gases. METHODS: Bio-specimens from aviation accident fatalities are submitted to CAMI for analyses. In blood, CO is analyzed as carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) and hydrogen cyanide as cyanide (CN-). Analytical data were stored in a database, and this database was searched for the period of 1990-2002 for the presence of COHb and CN in the submitted cases. RESULTS: Out of 5945 cases, there were 223 (4%) cases wherein COHb was >
