Carcinoembryonic antigen.

The level of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) is often elevated in the serum of patients with cancer. This article reviews the clinical usefulness of this observation. Carcinoembryonic antigen is not useful for detecting asymptomatic cancer; its sensitivity and specificity are not high, particularly for early stages of disease, so in populations with low prevalence of disease there are many false-positive and false-negative results. Similarly, the antigen level cannot, by itself, provide enough diagnostic certainty to confirm or rule out suspected cancer. For some cancers, antigen levels at the

Carcinoembryonic antigen: clinical application.

Carcinoembryionic antigen (CEA) a glycoprotein extracted from colonic cancer tissue (beta-globulin electrophoretic mobility, sedimentation coefficient 7 to 8S, and mol wt approximately 200,000) can be detected and measured by radioimmunoassay. Clinical evaluations of CEA determination have given the following results: In health: (1) Serum CEA level is not influenced by sex, age, blood type, time of blood sampling, or family history of cancer; (2) serum CEA level is influenced by a history of smoking or inflammatory disease of the bowel, lung, pancreas, and other organs (occasionally, a CEA lev

A carcinoembryonic antigen-secreting adenocarcinoma arising in tailgut cyst: clinical implications of carcinoembryonic antigen.

Tailgut cysts (TGCs) are rare congenital cysts that occur in the retrorectal or presacral spaces. Although most tailgut cysts have been reported as benign, there have been at least 9 cases associated with malignant change. We report herein on an unusual case of a 40-year-old woman with a carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA)-producing adenocarcinoma arising within a TGC who underwent surgical resection and local radiation therapy. Despite the complete resection, metastatic adenocarcinoma developed five months after surgery. CEA-producing adenocarcinoma from a TGC is extremely rare and only two cases,

Carcinoembryonic antigen staining in choriocarcinoma.

Choriocarcinoma of the colon presented as life-threatening lower gastrointestinal bleeding and a pathologic femoral fracture in a 42-year-old man. Elevated serum carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) levels and immunohistochemical positivity for CEA in neoplastic syncytiotrophoblasts were noted, as well as the expected positivity for the beta subunit of human chorionic gonadotropin (beta HCG). Additional cases, including one of two gestational choriocarcinomas and one of four testicular choriocarcinomas studied immunocytochemically for CEA also demonstrated positivity. Although CEA staining is common

[Carcinoembryonic antigen in gynecological oncology].

169 CEA-determinations in sera from 119 patients with gynecologic malignancies and 30 healthy women as controls are reported. The highest percentage of positive results was found in patients with cancer of the ovaries (62%). This result is followed by 60 per cent in cancer of the collum uteri, 50 per cent in cancer of vulva and vagina and 42 per cent in cancer of the breast. Very low CEA-titers have been found in cases with cancer of corpus uteri. This method is not reliable enough for very early detection of gynecological cancer, it may be a useful help in the supervision of cancer patients w

Carcinoembryonic antigen in rheumatic diseases.

In an earlier study, the mean plasma carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) level of patients with seropositive rheumatoid arthritis (RA) was found to be significantly higher than that of normal, control subjects. Levels of CEA in patients with seronegative RA and ankylosing spondylitis, however, did not differ from normal. In this study it was shown that the mean CEA level of 16 patients with Sjögren's syndrome was also significantly higher than normal (P equals 0.001), whereas in a group of 23 children with Still's disease the mean level fell within the normal adult range. Despite the apparent assoc

Carcinoembryonic antigen in high risk pregnancies.

The significance of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) measurement was evaluated in 25 pregnant women with diabetes mellitus, 15 Rh negative sensitized and nine prolonged pregnancies. Another 114 women with normal pregnancy served as controls. Values in maternal and umbilical cord serum and in amniotic fluid did not change appreciably through 24-42 weeks' gestation. No significant difference in maternal serum, cord serum and amniotic fluid CEA values was found between diabetic, Rh negative sensitized and normal pregnancies at the corresponding weeks. Similar findings were obtained in prolonged pre

Carcinoembryonic antigen: clinical and historical aspects.

To further define and determine the usefulness of CEA, 1100 CEA determinations have been made over the past two years at The Ohio State University Hospitals on patients with a variety of malignant and nonmalignant conditions. Correlation of CEA titers with history and clinical course has yielded interesting results not only in cancers of entodermally derived tissues, for which CEA has become an established adjunct in management, but also in certain other neoplasms and inflammatory states. The current total of 225 preoperative CEA determinations in colorectal carcinomas shows an 81% incidence o

Serum carcinoembryonic antigen in clinical disorders.

Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) levels have been measured in the serum of 490 patients and 93 normal controls using the double antibody radioimmunoassay technique. Levels were elevated in 71 of patients with carcinomata of the gastrointestinal tract and in 42% with other types of malignancy. In patients with non-neoplastic disease of the gastrointestinal tract and liver, elevated levels were found in 14 and 66% respectively. In general the CEA level tends to be higher in cancer patients with haematogenous dissemination. Following complete surgical removal of a tumour, levels fall to normal with

[Brain metastasis and the carcinoembryonic antigen].

INTRODUCTION: Neurological complications have a notable repercussion on the quality of life of patients with systemic cancer, and can even become the direct cause of death. The complication that causes most concern is undoubtedly brain metastasis, because of its difficult management and because there has been an upward tendency in its incidence in the last few years. AIMS: The aim of this study is to provide a review of the literature about brain metastases and, more particularly, about the carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) as a marker of these pathologies. DEVELOPMENT: In general it is reckone

INTRODUCTION: There is little information on the oncologic diagnostic accuracy of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) levels more than 3-fold above normal. OBJETIVES: To determine the prevalence of underlying cancer in patients with mild CEA elevation and the mean cost per patient of CEA determination. METHODS: A retrospective study was carried out in all patients with CEA elevation (3-10 ng/ml) and suspicion of cancer referred to the gastroenterology or internal medicine outpatient units from 2001 to 2007. RESULTS: We studied 100 patients (60 men and 40 women), with a mean age of 67.4 ± 14.2 ye

Carcinoembryonic Antigen: Beyond a Gastrointestinal Tumour Marker.

Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) is a widely used, non-specific tumour marker for gastrointestinal (GI) malignancies, particularly colorectal cancer (CRC). However, it can also be elevated in non-GI tumours and benign conditions, which are often overlooked. A 60-year-old, asymptomatic man was referred for assessment of GI malignancy. During a health screening check, he was found to have a markedly elevated CEA, 121.8 ng/mL (reference range: <5.0 ng/mL). His family history included CRC, breast, and thyroid cancers. GI evaluation, which included a colonoscopy and gastroscopy, identified only a sma

Carcinoembryonic antigen in breast nipple aspirate fluid.

New diagnostic tools are needed to complement mammography and physical examinations for early detection of breast cancer, particularly among younger women. We evaluated the tumor biomarker, carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), in 215 nipple aspirate fluid (NAF) samples collected from one or both breasts of 147 women, ages 27-87 years. Most subjects were recruited at the time of mammography examination. The 215 nipple fluid CEAs range from undetectable levels to 8400 ng/ml (median, 1100 ng/ml). Normal serum CEA levels are less than 6 ng/ml. There are no significant differences between the CEAs in fl

Carcinoembryonic antigen in mucoceles of oral mucosa.

Immunohistochemical detection of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) was reported in mucocele and associated minor salivary glands of oral mucosa. Higher levels of staining for CEA occurred in salivary glands with attached mucoceles, in which acinar cells and ductal segments in the gland displayed concentrations of CEA higher than those in normal minor salivary glands. Floating cells also gave positive CEA staining, whereas epithelial fragments and connective tissue in the mucocele wall were lacking in CEA. It was suggested that mucoceles in oral mucosa accumulated CEA in associated minor salivary

Carcinoembryonic antigen and related glycoproteins in psoriasis.

Psoriasis is a benign but hyperproliferative skin disease. Psoriatic basal cells show a phenotype similar to that of normal skin, while psoriatic suprabasal cells exhibit a qualitatively altered keratinization pathway, resulting in the absence of the granular layer. These cells further show an abnormal expression of cellular differentiation antigens, which does not lead to tumor development. This immunohistological study demonstrates the appearance of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) in psoriatic suprabasal cells below the parakeratotic layer, while other markers such as CEA-related antigens, th

[Carcinoembryonic antigen in ascites and pleural effusions].

The purpose of this prospective study was to evaluate the usefulness of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) assays in effusion fluids for the diagnosis of cancer. From 1978 to 1981, 63 patients totaling 67 effusions were investigated for malignant cells and CEA concentrations. There were 62 cases of ascites and 5 cases of pleural effusion resulting from 35 cirrhoses and 28 cancers, including 17 adenocarcinomas. Macroscopic examination of serous membranes was possible in 24 patients. CEA concentrations at least 4 times higher than the upper limit of normal laboratory values were required to diagnose

Carcinoembryonic antigen in management of colorectal carcinoma.

Carcinoembryonic antigen (C.E.A.) estimation has been used in the preoperative assessment of colorectal carcinoma patients and has been shown to give a useful guide to the presence of metastatic disease and ultimately to a poor prognosis if the serum concentration is 100 ng/ml or more. C.E.A. has been shown to be a more reliable index of tumour spread than either clinical examination or serum alkaline phosphatase estimation. Raised C.E.A. levels of less than 100 ng/ml do not, however, necessarily imply a poor prognosis. Routine C.E.A. estimation may have a valuable role in the assessment of th

[The carcinoembryonic antigen: apropos of an old friend].

The carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) is glycoprotein localized in the apical surface of mature enterocytes. The members of the CEA gene family are clustered on chromosome 19q13.2. It is formed by 29 genes, of which 18 are expressed. Many functions of CEA have been known in healthy indiuiduals, however its role as cell adhesion molecule is the most studied. Besides the colon, CEA is expressed in the stomach, tongue, oesophagus, cervix, and prostate. The most important clinical function is in colorectal, gastric and ovary cancer. It is used as prognosis marker, staging system, recurrence, treatmen
