Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma.

Sinonasal adenoid cystic carcinoma is a rare malignancy characterized by an insidious growth pattern and a tendency for perineural spread along major and minor nerves, resulting in invasion of the skull base and intracranial extension. Therefore, many patients present with advanced disease and involvement of critical structures, making treatment difficult and potentially associated with high morbidity. Surgery represents the mainstay of treatment of the primary tumor. Complete resection of the tumor with negative margins, whenever feasible, is associated with better survival outcomes. However,

[The adenoid cystic carcinoma].

The adenoid cystic carcinoma arising in the external auditory canal is a rare tumor, as other malignant neoplasias of the EAC and middle ear. The early diagnosis of these malignant tumors of the ear is very important to improve the prognosis. In this sense, the clinic experience is frequently the most useful diagnosis instrument to suspect this pathology when we have a confrontation with chronic otorrea and otalgia, common presentation form of this disease. In this report we show a new case of adenoid cystic carcinoma of external auditory canal and review the most significant medical literatur

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of palate.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma is a rare tumor arising from the minor salivary glands;, the palate being the commonest site. Distant metastasis and perineural invasion areis common in adenoid cystic carcinoma. Diagnosis of adenoid cystic carcinoma is made usually with the help of clinical features, radiographic features and histologic features. We reported a case of adenoid cystic carcinoma of palate involving left maxillary sinus. The diagnosis of the case and brief review of literature of adenoid cystic carcinoma is discussed. The aim here is to highlight the importance of diagnosis, treatment and

Primary cutaneous adenoid cystic carcinoma.

Primary cutaneous adenoid cystic carcinoma is a rare, slow-growing malignancy first described by Boggio in 1975. This tumor characteristically consists of basophilic cells with a distinct adenoid or cribriform pattern in the mid to deep reticular dermis. Modified myoepithelial cells with prominent basement membrane material often surround true lumina. Definitive diagnosis relies on the characteristic histologic features and the exclusion of metastatic disease. We describe two patients who presented with painful papules of the scalp and were successfully treated with wide local excision.

Primary cutaneous adenoid cystic carcinoma.

Primary adenoid cystic carcinoma of the skin is rare. Ten cases from the files of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology were studied. Seven of the 10 cases recurred after initial surgery. The interval between surgery and recurrence ranged from 4 months to 20 years. In one case there was metastasis to lung and pleura. Histologically, cutaneous adenoid cystic carcinoma is indistinguishable from adenoid cystic carcinoma of the salivary gland. The diagnostic histologic features and the differentiation of adenoid cystic carcinoma from other cutaneous neoplasms are discussed.

Bilateral tonsillar adenoid cystic carcinoma.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma is a malignant epithelial tumor of the salivary glands. It accounts for less than 1% of all head and neck cancers and less than 10% of all salivary gland neoplasms. It shows slow and indolent growth rate, low probability of regional nodal metastases, high propensity for perineural invasion, multiple and/or delayed recurrences and high incidence of distant metastases. It is the most frequently encountered malignant tumor of the minor salivary glands. The oral cavity and the oropharynx are the most common sites followed by the parotid, submandibular gland, paranasal sinu

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of trachea.

A 20-year-old male, presented with cough, haemoptysis, breathlessness and wheezing for the past one month. Contrast enhanced computerised tomographic (CECT), scan of chest and fibreoptic bronchoscopy revealed an endotracheal mass that on histopathological examination showed adenoid cystic carcinoma of trachea. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of chest confirmed involvement of adjacent prevertebral, para-oesophageal and subcarinal lymph nodes rendering the tumour inoperable.

Primary cutaneous adenoid cystic carcinoma.

A patient had primary cutaneous adenoid cystic carcinoma. The tumor closely resembled adenoid cystic carcinoma of salivary gland origin and was composed of cribriform and tubular masses of basaloid cells. Lumina formed by neoplastic cells contained mucin and hyalin , and similar constituents were located between neoplastic cell masses and adjacent dermis. Perineural invasion was observed. A review of seven other primary cutaneous adenoid cystic carcinomas indicates that this neoplasm tends to affect middle-aged and older individuals, is often present for several years prior to diagnosis, has a

[Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the breast].

OBJECTIVE: To review the clinical presentation and imaging findings of adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC). MATERIAL AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective study of the period between January 1990 and July 2004, comprising five cases of ACC of the breast, all in women, among 4,036 malignant lesions diagnosed (0.12%). We reviewed the available imaging studies (mammography in all five cases, ultrasound in four, and magnetic resonance in one). We also reviewed the clinical presentation and evolution in all patients. RESULTS: Three patients presented with palpable lesions. Mammographic findings co

[Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the larynx].

The adenoid cystic carcinoma represents less than 1% of all the malignant tumours located in the larynx. Only about 80 cases have been described so far in world literature. In contrast with the epidermoid carcinoma of the larynx, the adenoid cystic carcinoma is not apparently related to common risk factors such as smoking. However the prognosis is much worse, with survival rates of less than 20% after 15-20 years. Treatment is surgical, although radiotherapy may be of help. In this paper a new case of adenoid cystic carcinoma located in the supraglottis of a 26-years-old woman is reported and

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the breast.

Twelve cases of pure adenoid cystic carcinoma of the breast were reviewed. Patients ranged in age from 34 to 69 years. Seven carcinomas were in the right breast, and five in the left; five of the 12 were located in the central region of the breast, five in the upper outer quadrant, and the two in the upper inner and lower inner quadrants, respectively. Average diameter of the primary tumors was 2.5 cm (range, 0.7 to 6.0). We graded the tumors according to a system used for adenoid cystic carcinoma of the salivary gland: five tumors were grade I, six were grade II, and one was grade III. An ave

[Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the scalp].

BACKGROUND: Few cases of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the scalp have been described in the literature. Herein, we report a new case illustrating the difficulties of diagnosis and treatment of this rare form of tumour. CASE REPORT: A 49-year-old man consulted for a large ulcerated scalp tumour. The biopsy sample exhibited an aspect of cystic adenoid carcinoma. Bone invasion had occurred. Extremely wide surgical excision was carried out, extending down to the dura mater, with covering by means of a frontal flap with left temporal pedicle. Since the edges of the resection were also tumoural, post

[Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the larynx].

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the larynx is rare. Only 7 cases have been treated in our hospital from 1959 to 1986, which comprised 0.7% of all laryngeal malignancies in the same period. Of the 7 cases, there were 5 males and 2 females with the average age of 47. The symptoms at the time of diagnosis varied according to the size and location of the tumor. Three lesions were considered as supraglottic and one as subglottic. Six cases were treated by surgery and one by radiotherapy alone. The most common site of distant metastasis was the lung. The average survival was long even in those with pulm

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the larynx.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma, or cylindromas, constitute a large and distinct group of neoplasms with characteristic microscopic features recognizable in tissues as varied as the nasal passages, tongue, and bronchi. Cylindromas of the larynx are rare and only 60 cases have been reported in a review of the literature in 1977. In this report, a case of adenoid cystic carcinoma originating in the subglottic area of the larynx is discussed, with emphasis on the clinical and pathologic characteristics. In the past, the histogenesis of cylindroma has been the subject of considerable controversy, but rec

Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma with Intracranial Extension.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ADCC) is a malignant tumor of salivary gland origin. ADCC of sinonasal tract is rare. We present a rare and unresectable case of sinonasal ADCC with intracranial extension in an 83-year-old man with the chief complaint of nasal congestion. Invasion to the maxillary sinus, nasopharynx, anterior cranial fossa, sella turcica and extension to cavernous sinus, dura mater and infratemporal fossa were evident on MRI and CT scan. The patient was treated only by palliative radiotherapy, but unfortunately, he died 3 months after the initial diagnosis.

Glossopyrosis due to adenoid cystic carcinoma.

Glossopyrosis and glossodynia may occur from local or systemic factors or from any irritation along the course of the lingual nerve. Although cylindroma is relatively rare, it must be considered along with other malignant lesions when neurologic symptoms of burning and pain of the tongue persist. Examination of the lesion is best carried out as multiple needle biopsies rather than as open biopsy, in order to avoid seeding of the skin and lymphatics of the neck. Recurrences are frequent and, because of the slow growth, there must be a long follow-up period. Metastases to the lung and brain, alt

Molecular pathology of adenoid cystic carcinoma.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a slow-growing but locally aggressive salivary gland tumor. ACC is composed of ductal/tubular epithelial cells and basal/myoepithelial cells, which form cribriform, tubular, and solid growth patterns in variable combinations and dominance. ACC from different anatomic sites have similar morphological, molecular, and genetic changes. The key molecular alteration in ACC is chromosomal fusion/rearrangement/translocation involving MYB or MYBL1, usually with NFIB as a fusion partner. In this review, we summarize the pathology and molecular alterations in ACC and the
