A new polyomavirus, Merkel cell polyomavirus, was identified from Merkel cell carcinoma, a rare skin cancer. Origin of Merkel cell carcinoma is Merkel cell, a neuroendocrine cell in the skin. Merkel cell carcinoma occurs in the skin of head and face of white elders. Like other polyomaviruses, a 5.4 kbp-virus genome encodes VP1, VP2, VP3, small T antigen, and large T (LT) antigen. MCV has been frequently detected in Merkel cell carcinoma in the world by PCR. It was demonstrated that MCV genome integrated into the host genome of Merkel cell carcinoma. LT plays an important role in replication of

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) of the skin is a rare, aggressive form of skin cancer that metastasizes to other parts of the body. This cutaneous neuroendocrine tumour mainly affects older people, with most cases generally occurring over the age of 50 years. Merkel cell polyomavirus has been shown to induce gene mutations resulting in this skin cancer, with immunosuppression and ultraviolet radiation being other key risk factors in its pathogenesis. MCC is clinically seen as a rapidly enlarging, isolated, irregular erythematous nodule typically found on sun-exposed sites. Diagnosis is through cli

Merkel cell carcinoma is a rare, highly aggressive neuroendocrine cutaneous neoplasm with a variable clinical presentation. Histologically, it is a predominantly dermal-based lesion composed of monotonous small round cells with scanty cytoplasm, often difficult to differentiate from small round cell tumors, metastatic small cell carcinoma, blastic hematologic malignancies, and melanoma. The malignant cells express both epithelial and neuroendocrine immunohistochemical markers, a unique feature that helps differentiate this neoplasm from other entities. The pathogenesis of Merkel cell carcinoma

Merkel cell carcinoma (Mcc) is a very rare, malignant, neuroendocrine tumour. Mcc has an aggressive behavior, local recurrence, and regional or distant metastasis generally develop within a short period of time. At the Oral Medicine Department 158,056 patients were treated between 1970 and 2004. A single case of Mcc was diagnosed, in a 79-year-old woman. The tumour was localized to the upper lip. After successful cryosurgery and a 7-year tumour-free period, a new tumour developed in her palatine tonsil. It was an anaplastic carcinoma with neuroendocrine features, raising the possibility of a l

Merkel Cell Carcinoma (MCC) is a rare and aggressive neuroendocrine dermal neoplasm. This study is a retrospective outcomes analysis of two cases of MCC with data regarding clinical, histopathological, immunohistochemistry and also surgical, chimio and radiological treatment. MCC is a rare dermal tumors, this tumors are most predictable found on sunexposed sites. Diagnosis is best accomplished by a thorough clinical evaluation coupled with light microscopy and defined panel of immunohistochemical studies which are necessary for the definitive diagnosis of Merkel cell carcinoma (cytokeratins, n

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a malignant cutaneous neuroendocrine tumor which may be difficult to diagnose. It mostly occurs in old patients and the commonest sites are the skin of the head and neck and the extremities. MCC appears as a solitary violaceous dome-shaped nodule or indurated plaque. Histopathologic diagnosis may be difficult and three main patterns have been described. With immunohistochemistry studies, MCC express both epithelial (cytokeratins, EMA) and neuroendocrine (NSE, chromogranin, ...) markers. The tumor develops an aggressive course not unlike an aggressive melanoma. Lo

Merkel cell carcinoma is an uncommon but aggressive tumour with a high metastatic potential. A rapidly growing, non-tender cutaneous tumour on sun-exposed areas of the body in older patients should raise suspicion of the condition. It may be necessary to combine the patient history with clinical, radiological and pathological findings in order to make the correct diagnosis. Excision with a 1-2 cm margin, direct closure and simultaneous sentinel-node biopsy should be performed without delay. Adjuvant radiation therapy of the tumour site may be relevant. After the diagnosis is made, assessment a

Merkel cell carcinoma is a rare, highly aggressive skin tumor with neuroendocrine features found in older people. The pathogenesis is associated with immunosuppression, chronic UV light exposure and the Merkel cell polyomavirus. Clinically, Merkel cell carcinoma presents as a solitary, cutaneous or subcutaneous, red to bluish node. Due to early lymphogenic metastasis, locoregional metastases are already present in approximately 30% of cases at the time of diagnosis. The frequent local recurrences as well as the regional and distant metastases usually appear within the first 2-3 years after the

Merkel cell carcinoma is a rare tumour of the skin. It affects predominantly elderly Caucasian males on sun-exposed areas of the skin. Distinctively more frequent and at significantly lower age, its incidence is higher in immunocompromised patients. In these patients we often observe the highly aggressive course of Merkel cell carcinoma and a fatal outcome. The incidence of Merkel cell carcinoma has been rising in recent years and is more dramatic than the increased incidence of cutaneous melanoma. More than one-third of Merkel cell carcinoma patients will die from this cancer, making it twice

OBJECTIVES: The possibility of a so-called primary lymph node neuroendocrine carcinoma has been described in the literature. Here we evaluate cases fitting such a diagnosis and find that the cases demonstrate a convincing and pervasive pattern consistent with metastatic Merkel cell carcinoma.
METHODS: Six cases of primary lymph node Merkel cell carcinoma and one case of metastatic neuroendocrine carcinoma at a bony site, all with unknown primary, were sequenced using a combination of whole-exome and targeted panel methods. Sequencing results were analyzed for the presence of an ultraviolet (U

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare skin tumor that shares a similar immunophenotype with Merkel cells, although its origin is debatable. More than 80% of human MCC cases are associated with Merkel cell polyomavirus infections and viral gene integration. Recent studies have shown that the clinical and pathological characteristics of feline MCC are comparable to those of human MCC, including its occurrence in aged individuals, aggressive behavior, histopathological findings, and the expression of Merkel cell markers. More than 90% of feline MCC are positive for the Felis catus papillomavirus

IMPORTANCE: Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare but aggressive skin cancer. Quantifying the contribution of major potentially modifiable risk factors to the burden of MCC may inform prevention efforts.
OBJECTIVE: To estimate the population attributable fraction of MCC cases in the US that were attributable to major immunosuppressing conditions (eg, HIV, solid organ transplant, chronic lymphocytic leukemia [CLL]), ambient UV radiation [UVR] exposure, and Merkel cell polyomavirus [MCPyV]).
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This epidemiological assessment combined data from population-based

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare and aggressive skin cancer, which is associated in 80% of cases with the Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV). Advanced stages respond to immune checkpoint inhibitors in 50% of cases. Major issues remain unanswered regarding its oncogenesis and optimal treatment.
RECENT FINDINGS: MCPyV-negative and MCPyV-positive MCCs have been hypothesized to derive from distinct cells, although the cell of origin remains a matter of debate. The crucial role the MCPyV small T oncoprotein was recently confirmed by its ability to inactivate p53, together wit

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare but highly aggressive neuroendocrine carcinoma of the skin, with frequent recurrences, metastasis, and a high mortality rate. For primary or locoregional MCC, a wide local excision followed by radiation therapy is the basic treatment modality for preventing recurrence at the primary site and involved lymph nodes. Cytotoxic chemotherapy has been commonly used to treat patients with metastatic MCC, but not as an adjuvant therapy for high-risk resected MCC. Although MCC is often chemotherapy-sensitive in the first-line setting, responses are rarely durable an

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare skin cancer that mainly affects the elderly, and whose incidence is increasing. Although the exact origin of this cancer remains uncertain, research in recent years has revealed that MCC develops through two oncogenesis pathways: virally induced by the Merkel polyomavirus (80% of cases) and induced by mutations linked to ultraviolet rays (20% of cases). MCC is an aggressive cancer, with a high mortality rate and limited therapeutic options in advanced stage. In localized stages, the recommendations remain surgical excision, with almost systematic additiona

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is an uncommon primary cutaneous neuroendocrine carcinoma associated with an adverse prognosis. In recent years, our understanding of MCC biology has markedly progressed. Since the discovery of the Merkel cell polyomavirus, it has become clear that MCC represents an ontogenetically dichotomous group of neoplasms with overlapping histopathology. Specifically, most MCCs arise secondary to viral oncogenesis, while a smaller subset is the direct result of UV-associated mutations. The distinction of these groups bears relevance in their immunohistochemical and molecular

The pathogenesis of Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV) is characterized by ubiquitous and most likely silent childhood infection that may cause Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC). This mRNA vaccine includes the capsid proteins VP1 and VP2, as well as the Large T antigen and small T antigen, which are highly immunogenic. This has led to the development of mRNA vaccines against these T and Capsid peptides. Different computational methods was used to identify the epitopes of helper CD4 + lymphocytes and CD8 + lymphocytes. All of selected epitopes was analyzed for their toxicity, allergenicity, and immunog

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare and aggressive neuroendocrine skin cancer, typically involving the head, neck, and rarely extremities. MCC of the hand is rare, and early diagnosis is critical to optimizing patient outcomes. We report a case of MCC of the hand in a 79-year-old woman with a 1-month history of a left-hand mass. A punch biopsy of the lesion confirmed the diagnosis of MCC. Treatment consisted of wide local excision with 1.5 cm margins, split-thickness skin grafting, a negative sentinel node biopsy, followed by a single treatment of adjuvant radiation therapy. This case emphas

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare and aggressive neuroendocrine tumor of the skin. Risk factors include extensive sun damage, infection with Merkel cell polyomavirus, and an immunocompromised state. PRAME, also known as preferentially expressed antigen in melanoma, is a cancer-testis antigen recently found to be a useful diagnostic tool in the workup of melanocytic neoplasms. However, the expression pattern of PRAME in Merkel cell carcinoma is unknown. In this study, we examine PRAME expression in Merkel cell carcinoma and explore its prognostic implications.
