Salivary gland tumours comprise almost 5% of head and neck malignancies. Minor salivary gland tumours account for 10-15% of all salivary gland neoplasms and are usually malignant. The second most common minor salivary gland tumour (12-40% globally) is mucoepidermoid carcinoma. Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is more frequent in females, occurs in the fifth decade of life and is usually found in the parotid gland. However, the palate is a frequent site when it occurs in the minor glands. We report a case of a high-grade variant of mucoepidermoid carcinoma in the right retromolar trigone of a 21-year m

A single case of mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the lacrimal sac was considered worth reporting as there are only four other cases described in the literature. The importance of the correct histological diagnosis and the management are discussed. This appears to be the first study of the ultrastructure of lacrimal sac mucoepidermoid tumour.

OBJECTIVES: Discussions regarding the specific management and outcomes for laryngeal MEC are limited to very small, single-institution case series. To look further into the diagnosis and management of these uncommon non-squamous cell carcinomas of the larynx, we present 3 recent cases of laryngeal MEC treated at our institution.
METHODS: Patients at a tertiary hospital treated for MEC between October 2019 and December 2020 were retrospectively identified. Chart review, imaging analysis, and histologic slide creation were completed for all patients.
RESULTS: We identified and treated 2 patien

We report a 27-year-old Congolese man with mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) of the tongue base, which presented as spontaneous intraoral bleeding. Optimal treatment of tongue base MEC is unknown. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case treated with transoral excision with carbon dioxide laser and selective neck dissection. Although immunohistochemical studies have revolutionised understanding of the disease, little else is known of the natural history of MEC. The majority of MEC is considered low-grade, with an indolent course without recurrence or metastasis. Nonetheless, MEC requires

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the thymus is a rare carcinoma and there is little agreement about the treatment of this tumor. According to the analysis of previously reported tumors, biologic behavior of the tumor correlated with the spread of the lesion and degree of differentiation. We report a case of this tumor in a 31-year-old man. Resection of the tumor included the left upper lobe of the lung, the phrenic nerve, pericardium and disseminations in the pleura. The clinicopathological feature of this case was high-stage disease and low-grade histology. Postoperative chemotherapy and radiother

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is most commonly found in the parotid gland. It rarely occurs in the larynx and hypopharynx. There are only 32 reported cases from these areas. A case of a mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the hypopharynx is presented. Although the initial impression was squamous cell carcinoma, glandular structures were found in metastatic lymph nodes in the neck specimen, and after mucicarmine stains were positive, the final diagnosis was changed to mucoepidermoid carcinoma. This case illustrates the difficulty in diagnosing mucoepidermoid carcinoma, especially in unexpected locations. Di

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC), an invasive malignant neoplasm composed of mucus-secreting, epidermoid, and intermediate cells in varying proportions, is the commonest malignant salivary gland neoplasm in adults. Cutaneous metastases from the same, although not entirely common, has been previously reported but are typically confined to dermis. In this report, we present a case of MEC presenting as a cutaneous metastasis. A histologic feature unique to this case was epidermotropism, previously not noted in either metastatic or primary MEC.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to assess the clinicopathologic, treatment, and outcome features of a series of intraoral mucoepidermoid carcinomas (MECs) affecting children and adolescents.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between 1953 and 2006, from 102 intraoral MECs, 9 (8.8%) affected patients under 18 years of age. Clinical data were retrieved from the medical records, the microscopical slides reviewed, and the tumors graded in low, intermediate, and high grades of malignancy.
RESULTS: Five cases occurred in females and 4 in males, with a mean age of 14 years. Seven cases affected the palat

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is a malignant tumor that occurs mainly in the salivary glands of adults and children, but rarely in the esophagus. A surgical resection is the primary treatment for mucoepidermal carcinoma, and the prognosis has been reported to be poor. A 61-year-old man was diagnosed with an esophageal nodule in upper gastrointestinal endoscopy for the purpose of a medical examination without any special symptoms and an endoscopic resection was performed for an accurate diagnosis. An endoscopic mucosal resection was performed using a band ligation for a complete resection and contin

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the larynx is an uncommon malignancy. Nearly all cases are found in middle-aged and elderly men. Most cases arise in the supraglottis. Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is classified histologically as low grade and high grade. The prognosis is relatively good for low-grade tumor and poor for high-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma, which is also referred to as adenosquamous carcinoma. The treatment is primarily surgical, although the efficacy of post-operative radiation, with and without chemotherapy, is presently under evaluation in a National Intergroup Study. The case reporte

A rare case of mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the stomach in a 70-year-old man is reported. The protruded mass with central depression resembled a submucosal tumor, located on the posterior wall of a part of the cardia, fornix, and upper corpus. Histologically, submucosal ectopic glands composed of columnar cells, mucus-producing cells that closely resemble gastric epithelium, and ciliated epithelium were observed. The tumor consisted of an admixture of cuboidal, columnar cells, mucus-producing cells, singled or pseudostratified ciliated epithelium, and squamous metaplastic cells. The tumor cells

Clinical and morphological features of three cases of primary mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the thyroid are described. The tumours were composed of two cell types. One of these resembled squamous epithelium and ultrastructurally showed tonofilaments and numerous desmosomes. The other cell type contained Alcian blue and mucicarmine positive mucin and, on electron microscopy, showed mucigen granules. Marked stromal fibrosis and psammoma bodies were seen in all tumours. Immunohistochemical studies showed that the tumour cells were negative for thyroglobulin. A few calcitonin-containing cells were s

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to examine the clinical usefulness of a new World Health Organization classification scheme for salivary gland mucoepidermoid carcinoma, and to identify the factors most strongly associated with prognosis and outcome.
METHODS: The clinicopathological features of 45 patients who received treatment for mucoepidermoid carcinoma between 1986 and 2010 were retrospectively investigated.
RESULTS: The overall disease-specific 5-year survival rate was 81.8 per cent. The rate for patients with low-grade tumours (92.5 per cent) was significantly higher than that for patients with in

Salivary gland tumors are clinically diverse group of neoplasms, of which pleomorphic adenoma and mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) are most common benign and malignant tumors, respectively. Besides the major salivary glands, these tumors can affect the minor salivary gland tissues in the posterior part of the hard palate. Minor salivary gland tumor accounts for about 15% of all the salivary gland neoplasm, of which MEC accounts to about 35.9%. MEC appears as asymptomatic swellings and shows a variety of biological behaviors and variable natural history. This article reports a case of MEC involvi

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is a rare malignant tumor arising from the bronchial gland. A case of 6-year-old male child who presented with fever, hemoptysis and wheezing since 1month is reported. Chest X-ray showed features suggestive of foreign body with post-obstructive pneumonia and was treated for the same with medication without much improvement. Subsequently computerized tomography scan chest was carried out, which showed oval mass with speculated margin in right hilar region with distal segmental atelectasis. Bronchoscopy showed small growth with nodularity in the apical segmental br

Salivary gland tumours represent 1-4% of all human neoplasms and less than 5% occur in children and adolescents. Malignant salivary gland tumours only represent 0.08% of all childhood tumours and mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is the most common histological type. The majority of MECs in the paediatric group are histologically classified as low or intermediate grade of malignancy, favouring a good prognosis. Complete excision of the lesion with free surgical margins is the treatment of choice and the one that offers the best local control of the disease. Experience with minor salivary gland ca
