Translocation-associated renal cell carcinoma (TRCC) is a group of under-recognized malignant renal neoplasms owing to the unavailability of ancillary diagnostic tools and considering the fact that these tumors may histomorphologically mimic a heterogeneous group of neoplasms ranging from benign to malignant ones. Xp11.2 translocation-associated renal cell carcinoma is a disease of the young with a relatively less known prognosis owing to the rarity of such reported neoplasms. The histological appearance of bulbous tumor cells with abundant, vacuolated cytoplasm and the presence of psammomatoi

We present a cohort of 8 renal carcinomas that displayed a variable (5%-95% extent) light microscopic appearance of renal angiomyoadenomatous tumor/clear cell papillary renal cell carcinoma (RAT/CCPRCC) without fulfilling the criteria for these tumors. All but 1 case predominantly (75%-95% extent) showed histopathologic features of conventional clear cell renal cell carcinoma. In 5 of 7 cases with mostly conventional clear renal cell carcinoma (CRCC) morphology, a diagnosis of CRCC was supported by the molecular genetic findings (presence of von Hippel-Lindau tumor suppressor [VHL] mutation an

Renal Cell Carcinoma (RCC) has the highest mortality rate of the genitourinary cancers and the incidence of RCC has risen steadily. If detected early, RCC is curable by surgery although a minority are at risk of recurrence. Increasing incidental detection and an ageing population has led to active surveillance as an option for patients with small renal masses. RCC is heterogeneous and comprises several histological cell types with different genetics, biology and behavior. The identification of the genes predisposing to inherited syndromes with RCC has provided much of our knowledge of the mole

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) continues to be a frustrating tumor for clinicians to manage and treat. Progress has been made in the identification of risk factors, particularly dietary risk factors. An increased risk has been seen with frequent consumption of fried meat and poultry. Citrus fruits, vitamin C, beta-carotene, and alpha-tocopherol have demonstrated a protective effect against RCC. Other factors that have been associated with the risk of RCC are smoking (which doubles the risk), obesity, hypertension, and exposure to asbestos and petroleum products. Response rates for systemic treatme

Renal cell carcinoma accounts for 3% of all adult cancers and has many unusual features in its presentation, diagnosis, and management. It develops in a significant number of patients with acquired renal cystic disease, a disorder found almost exclusively in chronic hemodialysis patients. Abnormalities of chromosome 3 are frequently found in sporadic and familial forms. Radical nephrectomy remains the only potentially curative therapy for this tumor.

To date, multiple thyroid cancer variants have been reported. Herein, we report a rare case of chromophobe renal cell carcinoma-like thyroid carcinoma (CRETHCA) in a 60-year-old woman, for which the morphologic findings resembled those of chromophobe renal cell carcinoma (ChRCC). ChRCC of the kidney is characterized by large polygonal tumor cells with distinct cell borders, perinuclear clearing, multiple binucleate cells, and strongly positive immunostaining for paired box gene 8 (PAX8) and carbonic anhydrase IX (CA IX). In our case, the thyroid gland tumor was incidentally detected by routine

BACKGROUND: We aimed to characterize the clinical and multiphase computed tomography (CT) features, which can distinguish renal urothelial carcinoma (RUC) mimicking renal cell carcinoma (RCC) from clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) with collecting system invasion (CSI).
METHODS: Data from 56 patients with RUC (46 men and 10 women) and 366 patients with ccRCC (262 men and 104 women) were collected and assessed retrospectively. The median age was 65.50 (IQR: 56.25-69.75) and 53.50 (IQR: 42.25-62.5) years, respectively. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed

Background: Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) originates from the renal parenchyma, whereas transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) originates from the renal urothelium. Although renal pelvis TCC is relatively rare in terms of urologic malignancies, it is the most common tumor originating in renal pelvis. Case presentation: A 75-year-old woman presented with gross hematuria found to have a filling defect in the renal pelvis with retrograde pyelogram and cytology showed clusters of urothelial cells, with imaging suspicious for TCC. Patient underwent robotic nephroureterectomy with partial cystectomy. Pathol

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is a diverse array of cancers arising from renal tubular epithelial cells. RCC presenting with distinct morphological subtypes, such as the simultaneous presence of chromophobe RCC (chRCC) and clear cell RCC (ccRCC) lesions within the same kidney, is rare. We present the case of a 79-year-old female with a history of breast cancer who presented to our facility with right flank pain. Further investigations using CT of the abdomen and pelvis revealed a Bosniak type 4 cyst with a mural nodule in the right kidney. Furthermore, another well-defined, solid lesion measuring

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review the presentation, natural history and treatment of renal cell carcinoma in children and young adults with renal cell carcinoma (RCC).
RECENT FINDINGS: Complete resection of lymph nodes at the time of tumor resection can improve clinical outcomes and limit the need for adjuvant chemotherapy. Genetic alterations that lead to translocation tumors are a therapeutic target of receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitors.
SUMMARY: The incidence of RCC increases with age. Unlike adult patients, young patients with RCC present symptomatically and at higher stage and grade. Transl

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is a heterogeneous disease made up of a number of different cancer types, with distinct histologies, clinical courses, therapeutic responses, and genetic drivers. Germline mutations in 14 genes have been associated with increased risk of RCC and can result in HIF pathway activation, chromatin dysregulation, and altered metabolism. Knowledge of these pathway alterations can inform the development of targeted therapeutic approaches. To view this SnapShot, open or download the PDF.

Patients with renal cell cancer (RCC) develop metastatic spread in approximately 33% of cases. The clinical management of patients with metastatic RCC is complicated by the lack of significant efficacy from available therapies. Common sites of metastases include the lung, liver, bone, brain, and adrenal gland, with case reports detailing the capacity of RCC to appear almost anywhere in the body. More than one organ system is often involved in the metastatic process. Metastases may be found at diagnosis or at some interval after nephrectomy. Approximately 20% to 50% of patients will eventually

The last decade has brought dramatic changes in our understanding of localized renal tumors. Due to vast improvements in the abdominal imaging modalities of computed tomography (CT), ultrasound, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), approximately two-thirds of patients at our center have their renal tumors discovered incidentally. This tumor stage and size migration has vastly improved survival rates; more than 75% of patients with localized renal tumors achieve cure after surgical resection. In addition, the increased presentation of small, incidental tumors has increased the therapeutic opti

A case of renal cell carcinoma with unusual extension is reported, in which the radiographic findings have a close resemblance to those of transitional cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis. We emphasize that it is occasionally difficult to draw a distinction between transitional cell carcinoma with renal invasion and renal cell carcinoma with renal pelvic extension even by computed tomography (CT) and angiography.

Over the past decade, several distinct novel renal epithelial neoplasms driven by underlying tuberous sclerosis comples ( TSC)/ mammalian target of rapamycin (MTOR) pathway mutations have been described. We report herein two distinctive TSC2 -mutated renal cell carcinomas which do not fit any previously described entity. The two renal carcinomas occurred in young patients (ages 10 and 31 y), and were characterized by highly permeative growth within the kidney with metastases to perirenal lymph nodes. The neoplastic cells were predominantly large, multinucleated giant cells having variably eosi

Non-clear cell renal cell carcinomas (nccRCC) account for approximately 20-25% of renal cell carcinomas. Approximately 20 different histologically and/or molecularly defined entities are subsumed under nccRCC. Many entities only have a share of 1% or less. Due to the rarity of the subpopulations, there are currently no larger randomized studies and there is a some uncertainty regarding the optimal treatment recommendations. The previous treatment recommendations for localized and advanced nccRCC are presented. Data from the various systemic therapies are presented. For nccRCC, there are no dif

The simultaneous occurrence of renal cell carcinoma(RCC) and transitional cell carcinoma(TCC) in the same kidney is unusual. We report a 53-year-old man with ipsilateral synchronous renal adenocarcinoma and renal pelvic transitional cell carcinoma with severe hypercalcemia and a huge staghorn calculus in the opposite kidney. The patient was admitted to the hospital because of left flank pain and intermittent fever which he had had for 2 months. Computerized tomography revealed a huge stone in the right kidney and a mass in the upper pole with an irregular calcified pelvis in the left enlarged
