Quantitative imaging in medicine and surgery2023eng
BACKGROUND: Cardiac and respiratory motions in clinical positron emission tomography (PET) are a major contributor to inaccurate PET quantification and lesion characterisation. In this study, an elastic motion-correction (eMOCO) technique based on mass preservation optical flow is adapted and investigated for positron emission tomography-magnetic resonance imaging (PET-MRI) applications.
METHODS: The eMOCO technique was investigated in a motion management QA phantom and in twenty-four patients who underwent PET-MRI for dedicated liver imaging and nine patients for cardiac PET-MRI evaluation.

Most nonenhanced MRA techniques for evaluating peripheral artery disease (PAD) require cardiac synchronization through physiological gating. Electrocardiographic gating is the most popular method for cardiac synchronization; however, it is subject to interference from switching magnetic field gradients and radiofrequency pulses. A method is described for self-gated nonenhanced MRA that does not require the use of electrocardiographic gating. Imaging was prospectively triggered by detecting the acceleration of blood flow during systole with a reference-less phase contrast navigator. The techniq

Robust cardiorespiratory motion correction is critical for high-quality ultra-high-field (UHF) preclinical cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Whereas radial tiny golden angle (tyGA) sampling, data-driven self-gating (sg), compressed sensing (CS), and ultrashort echo time (UTE) are individually well-established techniques, their integration into a unified acquisition and reconstruction pipeline, together with systematic validation at 11.7 T remains insufficiently explored. This study presents and validates a UHF-optimized tyGA-based UTE workflow that enables high-temporal-resolution slid

Blood flow images by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) using a 0.25 T unit were evaluated for nine normal volunteers and 108 subjects with a variety of cardiovascular abnormalities. Using the non-gated short-spin echo (SE) technique, blood flow in the cardiovascular systems was not imaged in the normal volunteers. Using end-systolic and end-diastolic SE techniques for the normal subjects, blood flow in the cardiac chambers was not clearly imaged. Blood flow in the ascending aorta and aotric arch often did not appear in the gated SE images of the normal subjects. However, blood flow in the desce

This prospective exploratory study aimed to determine whether certain noninvasive advanced imaging techniques could estimate parasitic burden in heartworm-infested dogs; a noninvasive method is needed for ethical considerations and permitting longitudinal drug studies. Three cardiac-gated and respiratory-gated 3T MRI techniques and CT pulmonary angiography (CTPA) were performed in three healthy beagles to optimize imaging techniques. Once the imaging techniques were established, a pilot study was performed to determine which one of the MRI techniques would be used in an observer comparison stu

The feasibility of magnetic resonance imaging for defining anatomy of internal cardiac structures and major blood vessels was assessed in 14 normal subjects. Both electrocardiogram-gated and standard spin-echo images were obtained. The R-R interval determined the pulse repetition times in gated sequences. Gated images provided better visualization of internal cardiac morphology and of upper mediastinal vessels than did nongated images. Trabecular detail and components of the mitral valve could be resolved. All segments of the left ventricular wall could be evaluated by combining axial, coronal

ECG-synchronized multislice spiral CT (MSCT) allows a significant reduction of cardiac motion artefacts and as a result a virtually artefact-free display of intrathoracic structures. With their advantages in imaging geometry and continuous spiral image acquisition multislice CT scanners provide superior image quality and spatial resolution in these patients. Possible clinical applications for ECG assistance in MSCT include CT angiography of the coronary arteries, functional cardiac CT imaging and imaging of the cardiac valves, CT angiography of the aorta or pulmonary vascular tree as well as E

BACKGROUND: Fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has become a valuable adjunct to ultrasound in the prenatal diagnosis of congenital pathologies of the central nervous system, thorax, and abdomen. Fetal cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) was limited, mainly by the lack of cardiac gating, and has only recently evolved due to technical developments.
METHOD: A literature search was performed on PubMed, focusing on technical advancements to perform fetal CMR. In total, 20 publications on cardiac gating techniques in the human fetus were analyzed.
RESULTS: Fetal MRI is a safe imaging metho

Gated magnetic resonance (MR) imaging was used to evaluate central cardiovascular anatomy in 172 subjects, 31 of whom were healthy volunteers. Using the spin-echo technique, images of diagnostic quality were obtained in 93% of cases with TE = 28 msec and in 65% of cases with TE = 56 msec. Transverse multisection sequences encompassing most of the left ventricle required approximately 6-8 minutes. Corroborative studies were available in 134 of 141 patients who had cardiovascular disease; two dimensional echocardiograms and angiography in 133 and 100 patients, respectively. Gated MR demonstrated

PURPOSE: Image-guided cardiac interventions involve the use of fluoroscopic images to guide the insertion and movement of interventional devices. Cardiorespiratory gating can be useful for 3D reconstruction from multiple x-ray views and for reducing misalignments between 3D anatomical models overlaid onto fluoroscopy.
METHODS: The authors propose a novel and potentially clinically useful retrospective cardiorespiratory gating technique. The principal component analysis (PCA) statistical method is used in combination with other image processing operations to make our proposed masked-PCA techni

This paper describes the development and optimization of an innovative technique using an external surface coil to obtain high resolution, thin section MR images of the oesophagus using volunteers. T2 weighted fast spin echo sequences were performed with and without cardiac gating. The field of view (FOV), matrix size, slice thickness, number of signal averages (NSA), and repetition time (TR)/echo time (TE) were altered to optimize signal to noise ratio (SNR) whilst maintaining spatial resolution. The effect of cardiac gating was also investigated. Workstation images were evaluated on the abil

Cardiac chamber enlargement is important in the prediction of morbidity and mortality for a multitude of cardiovascular processes. Although non-electrocardiographically (ECG) gated multidetector CT is a commonly used cross-sectional imaging modality to evaluate a litany of cardiothoracic processes, a standardized method for evaluating and reporting cardiac chamber size does not exist. This has led to heterogeneity in the reporting of cardiac enlargement at routine multidetector CT with most readers often using gestalt assessment and the term cardiomegaly, which does not implicate the chamber o

Breath-hold electrocardiographically gated cardiac magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and contrast material-enhanced MR angiography are emerging as ideal techniques for the evaluation of complex congenital heart disease. Tetralogy of Fallot is the most common cause of cyanotic congenital heart disease and, in its classic form, is associated with varying degrees of hypoplasia of the central and peripheral pulmonary arteries, with valvar pulmonary atresia and collateral aortopulmonary vessels occupying the extreme end of the spectrum. Accurate assessment of the size and anatomy of the pulmonary art

PURPOSE: Myocardial perfusion (MP) PET imaging is a powerful tool in risk assessment and stratification of patients with coronary artery disease. Involuntary organ motion degrades cardiac PET image resolution, while respiratory and/or cardiac gating to freeze the motion leads to noisier reconstructed images due to reduced counts in the gated frames. In this work, we propose an MRI-assisted dual motion correction method to compensate for respiratory and cardiac motion in MP PET data and study the impact of dual motion correction on MP defect detection using systematically designed experiments.

PURPOSE: Cardiac computed tomography is a rapidly emerging technique for noninvasive diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases. Nevertheless, the cardiac motion continues to be a limiting factor. Electrocardiogram-gated cardiac computed tomography reconstruction methods yield excellent results, but these are limited in their temporal resolution due to the mechanical movement of the gantry, and lead to residual motion blurring artifacts. If the motion of the cardiac region of interest is determined, motion compensated gated reconstructions can be applied to reduce motion artifacts. In this paper it

In vivo or ex vivo EPR imaging, EPRI, has been established as a powerful technique for determining the spatial distribution of free radicals and other paramagnetic species in living organs and tissues. While instrumentation capable of performing EPR imaging of free radicals in whole tissues and isolated organs has been previously reported, it was not possible to image rapidly moving organs such as the beating heart. Therefore instrumentation was developed to enable the performance of gated-spectroscopy and imaging on isolated beating rat hearts at L-band. A synchronized pulsing and timing syst

Pseudoaneurysm of the aortic root is a rare condition typically diagnosed by the use of cardiac catheterization and aortography or by surgical exploration. This case describes a patient who was shown to have a pseudoaneurysm of the aortic root without evidence of any acquired etiologic factors other than atherosclerotic vascular disease. Two new advanced techniques of noninvasive imaging were used in confirming the diagnosis: transesophageal echocardiography and gated magnetic resonance imaging. This case highlights the value of techniques such as these to reliably assess the heart and great v

Cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging has proven valuable for the assessment of structural and functional cardiac abnormalities. Even although it is an established imaging method in small animals, the long acquisition times of gated or self-gated techniques still limit its widespread application. In this study, the application of tiny golden angle radial sparse MRI (tyGRASP) for real-time cardiac imaging was tested in 12 constitutive nexilin (Nexn) knock-out (KO) mice, both heterozygous (Het, N = 6) and wild-type (WT, N = 6), and the resulting functional parameters were compared with a wel

In a patient who died of complications of severe pulmonary hypertension, right ventricular failure, and sepsis, antemortem two-dimensional (2-D) echocardiography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies demonstrated a right ventricular mass which at autopsy proved to be thrombus. The diagnostic features of this mass as imaged by these two methods are compared. This case was complicated in that the patient had a history of right atrial myxoma that had been successfully removed three years previously, and a history of several prior pulmonary emboli. Gated MRI depicted the size, shape, and su
