Microgravity is an extreme environment inducing relevant adaptive changes in the human body, especially after prolonged periods of exposure. Since the early sixties, numerous studies on the effects of microgravity, during manned Space flights, have produced an increasing amount of information concerning its physiological effects, globally defined "deconditioning". Microgravity deconditioning of the cardiovascular system (CVD) is briefly reviewed. It consists of: (1) a decrease of circulating blood and interstitial fluid volumes, (2) a decrease of arterial blood diastolic pressure, (3) a decrea

The aim of our serial work was to investigate the cardiovascular deconditioning effect of long-term simulated weightlessness and to elucidate its mechanisms. Our research goal was established in view of the following three reasons. Firstly, even after several decades of extensive research, there still exist significant gaps in our knowledge concerning microgravity induced cardiovascular effect. Secondly, to guarantee the health and safety of astronauts in the future prolonged missions, it is important to understand the cardiovascular adaptation to long-term weightlessness. Thirdly, the reporte

There are two possible mechanisms contributing to the excessive fall of stroke volume (and its contribution to orthostatic intolerance) in the upright position after bed rest or spaceflight: reduced cardiac filling due to hypovolemia and/or a less distensible heart due to cardiac atrophy. We hypothesized that preservation of cardiac mechanical function by exercise training, plus normalization of cardiac filling with volume infusion, would prevent orthostatic intolerance after bed rest. Eighteen men and three women were assigned to 1) exercise countermeasure (n=14) and 2) no exercise countermea

BACKGROUND: Orthostatic intolerance after bed rest is characterized by hypovolemia and an excessive reduction in stroke volume (SV) in the upright position. We studied whether the reduction in SV is due to a specific adaptation of the heart to head-down tilt bed rest (HDTBR) or acute hypovolemia alone.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We constructed left ventricular (LV) pressure-volume curves from pulmonary capillary wedge pressure and LV end-diastolic volume and Starling curves from pulmonary capillary wedge pressure and SV during lower body negative pressure and saline loading in 7 men (25+/-2 years)

OBJECTIVE: To disclose the changes in pathophysiology of cardiovascular deconditioning (CVD) induced by tail-suspension (TS) and to explore the effects of NOS inhibitor on CVD in TS rats.
METHOD: -30 degrees tail suspended rats were used as the model to simulate the physiological effects of microgravity. Wistar rats were randomly arranged into: control group (CON), 7 d TS group (TS 7 d) and TS 7 d + NOS inhibitor group (TS 7 d + L-NAME). Then, all the rats were subjected to +90 degrees head-up tilt to simulate the physiological effects of orthostatic stress (SO) after 7 d tail-suspension, onl

The microgravity environment of spaceflight produces rapid cardiovascular changes which are adaptive and appropriate in that setting, but are associated with significant deconditioning and orthostatic hypotension on return to Earth's gravity. The rapidity with which these space flight induced changes appear and disappear provides an ideal model for studying the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms of deconditioning and orthostatic hypotension, regardless of etiology. Since significant deconditioning is seen after flights of very short duration, muscle atrophy due to inactivity plays, at mo

Evidence supports early rehabilitation after stroke to limit disability. However, stroke survivors are typically sedentary and experience significant cardiovascular and muscular deconditioning. Despite growing consensus that preclinical and clinical stroke recovery research should be aligned, there have been few attempts to incorporate cardiovascular and skeletal muscle deconditioning into animal models of stroke. Here, we demonstrate in rats that a hindlimb sensorimotor cortex stroke results in both cardiovascular and skeletal muscle deconditioning and impairments in gait akin to those observ

Cardiovascular deconditioning after a 4-h head-down bed rest (HDBR) might be a consequence of the time of day relative to pre-HDBR testing, or simply 4 h of confinement and inactivity rather than the posture change. Ten men and 11 women were studied during lower body negative pressure (LBNP) before and after 4-h HDBR and 4-h seated posture (SEAT) as a control for time of day and physical inactivity effects to test the hypotheses that cardiovascular deconditioning was a consequence of the HDBR posture, and that women would have a greater deconditioning response. Following HDBR, men and women ha

Exposure to microgravity induces cardiovascular deconditioning characterized by orthostatic hypotension when astronauts return to the earth. In order to understand the mechanism of cardiovascular deconditioning, it is necessary to clarify the changes in hemodynamics and the cardiovascular regulation system over the period of space flight. The telemetry system applied to freely moving animals will be a useful and appropriate technique for this kind of long term study of the cardiovascular system in the conscious animal during space flight. The purpose of the present study is twofold: firstly, t

Astronauts in microgravity experience multi-system deconditioning, impacting their inflight efficiency and inducing dysfunctions upon return to Earth gravity. To fill the sex gap of knowledge in the health impact of spaceflights, we simulate microgravity with a 5-day dry immersion in 18 healthy women (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT05043974). Here we show that dry immersion rapidly induces a sedentarily-like metabolism shift mimicking the beginning of a metabolic syndrome with a drop in glucose tolerance, an increase in the atherogenic index of plasma, and an impaired lipid profile. The postacute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2, also known as Long COVID, may affect 10% to 25% of individuals diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2. More than 100 symptoms have been reported among patients with Long COVID, but almost all patients report severe fatigue, orthostatic intolerance, shortness of breath, and reductions in exercise tolerance. Emerging data suggest that cardiovascular deconditioning plays a major role in the development of this syndrome and that reductions in functional capacity among patients with Long COVID are comparable to reductions seen among individuals with cardiovascular deconditi

In human zero gravity induces a cardiovascular deconditioning. The transfer of blood from the periphery to the thoracic compartment, occuring immediately at the beginning of the exposure to microgravity seems to be involved in this phenomenon. We have previously shown that LBNP (-40 mm Hg) produced an exaggerated heart rate response at the end of 24 hours of bed rest without modification of the cardiopulmonary receptors in human. Some other studies have shown that microgravity induces an impairment of the baroreflex sensitivity in human, but its involvement in the cardiovascular deconditioning

OBJECTIVE: 'Disuse' and 'Deconditioning' in relation to low back pain (LBP) are terms often used interchangeably. Discussions of 'disuse' refer to general physical inactivity, which evidence suggests does not differ between symptomatic and asymptomatic persons. 'Deconditioning' refers to a decrease in function, commonly both cardiovascular/aerobic fitness and muscular strength/endurance, again noting little difference. However, examination of decreased function relating specifically to lumbar extensor musculature deconditioning has yet to be examined, corroborating all possible methods. Thus,

Cardiovascular deconditioning observed in humans during spaceflight has been suggested to be related in part to changes in venous compliance, mechanisms including skeletal muscle deconditioning. However, increased venous compliance was observed during very short term simulations (24 to 48 hours), and during an over 28-day simulation the hyperdistensibility tended to decrease whereas the muscular changes were still present (2). In the first case, muscular changes can not explain the venous alterations because of the short delay. In the second case, the relationship between muscular and venous a

Reduction of exercise capacity with confinement to bed rest is well recognized. Underlying physiological mechanisms include dramatic reductions in maximal stroke volume, cardiac output, and oxygen uptake. However, bed rest by itself does not appear to contribute to cardiac dysfunction. Increased muscle fatigue is associated with reduced muscle blood flow, red cell volume, capillarization and oxidative enzymes. Loss of muscle mass and bone density may be reflected by reduced muscle strength and higher risk for injury to bones and joints. The resultant deconditioning caused by bed rest can be in

The hindlimb-unloaded (HU) rat model elicits cardiovascular deconditioning and simulates the physiological adaptations to microgravity or prolonged bed rest in humans. Although psychological deficits have been documented following bed rest and spaceflight in humans, few studies have explored the psychological effects of cardiovascular deconditioning in animal models. Given the bidirectional link established between cardiac autonomic imbalance and psychological depression in both humans and in animal models, we hypothesized that hindlimb unloading would elicit an alteration in sympathovagal ton

BACKGROUND: Neuromuscular and neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease result in progressive mobility restrictions, accelerating cardiovascular, muscular, and functional deconditioning. Such changes resemble the multisystem deconditioning that occurs during microgravity exposure, highlighting shared physiological consequences of reduced mechanical loading, even though the underlying mechanisms differ.
OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated short-arm human centrifugation (SAHC) training as a whole-body rehabilitation intervention for patients with multiple sclerosis and neurodegenerativ

Cardiovascular changes occur during spaceflight. Because of the loss of hydrostatic pressure there is, during weightlessness, a fluid shift of extra- and intra-vascular volumes to the upper part of the body. This provokes objective and subjective symptoms, especially in the first days of spaceflight. The fluid shift is perceived by baroreceptors as a relative central hypervolaemia and induces neuro-hormonal mechanisms which provoke a real hypovolaemia. Cardiovascular deconditioning exists during spaceflight with the following symptoms when astronauts return to earth: decreased orthostatic tole
