BACKGROUND: Aim of the paper is to evaluate the surgical indication in patients with cardiac and concomitant pathology.
METHODS: In this study, are examined ten combined surgical sessions performed from 1992 at 1999, in patients affected by both cardiac and neoplastic disease with surgical indication. Eight men and two women, mean age 59.4 (range 50-68 years), eight affected by thoracic or abdominal tumour, one affected by hypersplenism and one by pulmonary cystic dysplasia with recurring pneumothorax. Anatomic resection and in two patient wedge-resection were performed except one woman who w

To improve the effect and reduce the mortality of the simultaneous coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) with other cardiovascular surgical procedures, from Nov, 1984 to July, 1996, 51 patients underwent such operation. Among them 45 patients had valvular heart diseases, 4 postinfarction ventricular septal defect and ventricular aneurysm, and 1 myxoma of left atrium and abdominal aortal aneurysm. The operative mortality was 5.85% (3/51), and 3 patients died. Cardiovascular surgical patients of over 50 years or with angina pectorsi and ECG confirmed myocardiac ischemia should undergo coronary

Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) is one of the most common congenital heart diseases for which patients are referred for postoperative magnetic resonance (MR) imaging evaluation. The most common surgical procedures for TOF repair include infundibulectomy, transannular pulmonary artery patch repair, and right ventricle-pulmonary artery conduit placement. In the past few decades, surgery has proved successful, but most patients require repeat imaging throughout their lives. MR imaging is now frequently used for morphologic and functional evaluation after TOF repair. The most common late postoperative s

Older individuals can now undergo invasive cardiovascular procedures without serious concern about mortality, and the numbers and proportions of the over 65s and 85s doing so in Australia has been increasing over the last 20 years. There is overwhelming evidence linking cardiovascular conditions to late-life (65 years and over) cognitive impairment and dementia including Alzheimer's Disease, primarily due to impaired cerebrovascularisation and cascading neuropathological processes. Somewhat paradoxically, these cardiovascular interventions, carried out with the primary aim of revascularisation

Chronic thoracic fistulas after transapical TAVI are rare but serious complications. A 67-year-old male with prior aortic dissection and two transapical valve implantations developed a chronically infected fistula due to retained apical closure material. Multidisciplinary surgery with complete removal of infected tissue, staged debridement, vacuum-assisted closure (VAC) therapy, and targeted antibiotics achieved infection control and successful wound reconstruction using local flaps. The patient recovered uneventfully. Complete foreign material removal and interdisciplinary management are cruc

OBJECTIVE: Renal cell carcinomas often form venous thrombi that extend into the vena cava. Frequently, cardiovascular consultation is necessary for complete surgical excision. We sought to investigate the risk factors, surgical techniques, and outcomes of patients treated for renal cell carcinoma with venous extension.
METHODS: We reviewed the records of 46 consecutive patients who underwent surgical management of renal cell carcinoma with venous extension between 1991 and 2005. Data on patient history, staging, surgical techniques, morbidity, and survival were analyzed.
RESULTS: There were

BACKGROUND: Perioperative stroke-related mortality in the non-cardiovascular, non-neurological surgery population is an uncommon, yet devastating outcome. A combination of emboli and hypoperfusion may cause large vessel occlusions leading to perioperative strokes and mortality. Identifying independent risk factors for perioperative stroke-related mortality may enhance risk-stratification algorithms and preventative therapies.
OBJECTIVES: This study utilised cause-of-death data to determine independent risk scores for common surgical comorbidities that may lead to perioperative stroke-related

Three-dimensional (3D)-printing technologies in cardiovascular surgery have provided a new way to tailor surgical and percutaneous treatments. Digital information from standard cardiac imaging is integrated into physical 3D models for an accurate spatial visualization of anatomical details. We reviewed the available literature and analysed the different printing technologies, the required procedural steps for 3D prototyping, the used cardiac imaging, the available materials and the clinical implications. We have highlighted different materials used to replicate aortic and mitral valves, vessel

BACKGROUND: Many pediatric cardiac surgery centers obtain mediastinal cultures at the time of delayed sternal closure (DSC). There are no recommendations regarding how to treat patients with positive cultures. We explored the clinical significance of positive mediastinal cultures with regard to surgical site infections (SSI).
METHODS: A retrospective study was performed on all patients who underwent DSC at our institution between December 2006 and December 2011. National Healthcare Safety Network criteria were used to prospectively identify SSIs. Univariate and multivariate logistic regressio

Heart failure (HF) and myocardial infarction are serious complications of major noncardiac surgery in older adults. Many factors can contribute to the development of HF during the postoperative period. The incidence of, and risk factors for, procedure-associated heart failure (PHF) occurring at the time of, or shortly after, medical procedures in a population-based sample ≥ 65 years of age have not been fully characterized, particularly in comparison with HF not proximate to medical procedures. This analysis comprises 5,121 men and women free of HF at baseline from the Cardiovascular Health St

Degenerative aortic stenosis (AS) is the most common valvular disease in the western world with a prevalence expected to double within the next 50 years. International guidelines advocate the use of cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) as an investigative tool, both to guide diagnosis and to direct optimal treatment. CMR is the reference standard for quantifying both left and right ventricular volumes and mass, which is essential to assess the impact of AS upon global cardiac function. Given the ability to image any structure in any plane, CMR offers many other diagnostic strengths includin

The monitoring of coagulation by viscoelastometric methods-thromboelastography and rotational thromboelastometry-may detect the contributions of cellular and plasma components of hemostasis. These methods might overcome some of the serious limitations of conventional laboratory tests. Viscoelastic testing can be repeatedly performed during and after surgery and thus provides a dynamic picture of the coagulation process during these periods. Several experiences with the use of these methods in cardiovascular surgery have been reported, but there is perspective for more frequent use of these ass

BACKGROUND: Majority of limb amputations are caused by circulatory disturbances such as vascular occlusions and strictures. Discovery of modern and more advanced ultrasonic interventional vascular debulking methodology would likely save limbs of CVD patients and their lives in an economical way. However, there is a lack of researches regarding the ultrasound's effect on physiological functions of human blood cells. The tube-shaped ultrasound waveguide wire with orifices at its operational end was offered as the alternative to some currently patented interventional thrombosis treatment solution

Within modern medicine at the beginning of 21st century, we are witnessing a revolutionary development of the invasive diagnostics and therapy of cardiovascular system diseases. With the discovery of X-rays at the end of 19th century by Wilhelm Roentgen, it is appropriate to reflect on the gifted individuals whose efforts drastically altered radiology and cardiology. The early techniques used in peripheral percutaneous transluminal angioplasty form the basis for subsequent percutaneous intervention both in the peripheral and coronary arteries and are largely the contribution of Charles Dotter.

BACKGROUND: Antiphospholipid (APL) antibodies are a heterogenous group of antibodies that have been associated with an increase in bleeding complications and a marked increase in thrombotic events, both of which result in significant patient morbidity and mortality.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of patients identified to be positive for APL via a university thrombosis registry who had cardiovascular surgery between 1989 and 1994.
RESULTS: Seventy-one patients positive for APL antibodies were identified. Of those patients, 19 had cardiovascular surgical procedures (11 women a

The primary risk management, on the side of a nurse, in the operating room includes prevention of misidentificatin of both the patient and the site of operation. Leaving of a foreign body in the patient, falling of the patient from the operating table, incidence of deep venous thrombosis and mismatch of blood transfusion should also be prevented with utmost care. The long operating time in cardiovascular surgery and the lateral position of the patient on the operating table in chest or esophageal surgery require additional risk management. Risks of pressure sore as well as nervous injury can b

BACKGROUND: Treatment of infective endocarditis is primarily conservative. Persistent infection, tissue destruction und hemodynamic instabilities argue - in dependence on the microorganisms involved - for an urgent surgical treatment, even when there is still no control of the local and systemic infection. For timing of the surgical intervention, the following suggestions seem to be valid: TIMING OF THE SURGICAL INTERVENTION: Delayed surgical indication is considered a prognostic factor of extraordinary relevance for surgical treatment of infective endocarditis. Presence of intramyocardial, pa
