Hypomagnesemia and cardiovascular system.

Magnesium depletion in clinical practice is mainly related to loop diuretics and thiazides. Among patients treated with diuretics more than 1/3 exhibit hypomagnesa. Arrhythmias and sudden death attributed to magnesium depletion could be prevented by Mg administration. Magnesium deficiency in experimental animals promotes atherosclerotic lesions whereas this ion is involved in various stages of myocardial damage after experimental coronary artery occlusion. In humans magnesium administration in the first 24 hours of myocardial infarction was related to beneficial effects in first year mortality

Aquaporins in Cardiovascular System.

Recent studies have shown that aquaporins (AQPs) are involved in the regulation of cardiovascular function and the development of related diseases, especially in cerebral ischemia, congestive heart failure, hypertension, and angiogenesis. Therefore, further studies are needed to elucidate the mechanism accounting for the association between AQPs and vascular function-related diseases, which may lead to novel approaches to the prevention and treatment of those diseases. Here we will discuss the expression and physiological roles of AQPs in vascular tissues and summarize recent progress in the r

Cannabinoids and Cardiovascular System.

Cannabinoids influence cardiovascular variables in health and disease via multiple mechanisms. The chapter covers the impact of cannabinoids on cardiovascular function in physiology and pathology and presents a critical analysis of the proposed signalling pathways governing regulation of cardiovascular function by endogenously produced and exogenous cannabinoids. We know that endocannabinoid system is overactivated under pathological conditions and plays both a protective compensatory role, such as in some forms of hypertension, atherosclerosis and other inflammatory conditions, and a pathophy

Alcohol and the cardiovascular system.

Mlíková Seidlerová J. Alcohol and the cardiovascular system The consumption of alcohol leads to a variety of direct and indirect effects on the cardiovascular system, as evidenced by numerous epidemiological studies on this topic. The effect of alcohol on the development of cardiovascular complications is influenced not only by the amount of alcohol consumed but also by the drinking pattern (binge drinking vs. regular consumption of moderate amounts of alcohol). This applies to the relationship between alcohol consumption and the rise in blood pressure or the development of arterial hypertensi

Rosacea and the cardiovascular system.

Rosacea and the cardiometabolic syndrome are both associated with chronic inflammation and a pro-inflammatory phenotype. Emerging clinical evidence supports the relationship between rosacea and cardiometabolic syndrome hypertension and obesity. This article reviews our current findings and understanding in the skin and cardiovascular relationship in rosacea. Rosacea appears to be associated with hypertension, dyslipidemia, and obesity. The role of smoking in rosacea is currently less clear. It remains uncertain whether treatment of these risk factors will aid improvement of rosacea. Greater un

Cyclooxygenases and the cardiovascular system.

Cyclooxygenase (COX)-1 and COX-2 are centrally important enzymes within the cardiovascular system with a range of diverse, sometimes opposing, functions. Through the production of thromboxane, COX in platelets is a pro-thrombotic enzyme. By contrast, through the production of prostacyclin, COX in endothelial cells is antithrombotic and in the kidney regulates renal function and blood pressure. Drug inhibition of COX within the cardiovascular system is important for both therapeutic intervention with low dose aspirin and for the manifestation of side effects caused by nonsteroidal anti-inflamma

Adenosine and the Cardiovascular System.

Adenosine is an endogenous nucleoside with a short half-life that regulates many physiological functions involving the heart and cardiovascular system. Among the cardioprotective properties of adenosine are its ability to improve cholesterol homeostasis, impact platelet aggregation and inhibit the inflammatory response. Through modulation of forward and reverse cholesterol transport pathways, adenosine can improve cholesterol balance and thereby protect macrophages from lipid overload and foam cell transformation. The function of adenosine is controlled through four G-protein coupled receptors

Ghrelin and the cardiovascular system.

Although ghrelin was initially associated with regulation of appetite, the cardiovascular system has also been recognized as a potentially important target for its effects. Moreover, experimental and a limited number of clinical studies suggest a potential role for ghrelin in the treatment of congestive heart failure. So far, reported cardiovascular effects of growth hormone secretagogues and/or ghrelin include lowering of peripheral resistance, either direct at the vascular level and/or by modulating sympathetic nervous activity. Other observed effects indicate possible improvement of contrac

Hormonal contraception and cardiovascular system.

Hormonal contraception is the most widely used method to prevent unplanned pregnancies. The literature has shown an association between cardiovascular risk and use of hormone therapy. With the purpose of providing better guidelines on contraception methods for women with risk factors for cardiovascular disease, we have reviewed the literature on the subject. This review describes the latest data from the scientific literature concerning the influence of hormonal contraceptives on arterial thrombosis, venous thrombosis and systemic high blood pressure, which are diseases that have become increa

Tachykinins and the cardiovascular system.

The tachykinin family of vasoactive peptides comprises the neuropeptides substance P, neurokinin A and neurokinin B, and the newly discovered endokinins and hemokinins. Their cardiovascular effects are predominantly mediated by the family of neurokinin receptors. This review summarises the most recent advances in understanding the effects of tachykinins on the vasculature, and summarises their therapeutic potential. Tachykinins stimulate plasma extravasation, particularly acting through neurokinin-1 receptors in an endothelium-dependent manner. They therefore play prominent roles in tissue oed

Cardiovascular system effects of marijuana.

Marijuana and delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) increase heart rate, slightly increase supine blood pressure, and on occasion produce marked orthostatic hypotension. Cardiovascular effects in animals are different, with bradycardia and hypotension the most typical response. Cardiac output increases, and peripheral vascular resistance and maximum exercise performance decrease. Tolerance to most of the initial cardiovascular effects appears rapidly. With repeated exposure, supine blood pressure decreases slightly, orthostatic hypotension disappears, blood volume increases, heart rate slows, and

[Stress and the cardiovascular system].

A variety of evidence shows that stress contributes to a more or less sustained elevation of blood pressure, as well as to the triggering and aggravation of cardiovascular pathology, especially coronary heart disease. Experimentally induced changes, that may be pathogenic due to their duration or repetition, can be produced in hemodynamics, lipid metabolism, or hemostasis. High blood pressure, vascular heredity, but also a trend to inhibition of action, seem to be responsible for hyperreactivity to stress. Hypertensives are particularly reactive to active stresses related to controlable situat

Melatonin and the Cardiovascular System.

Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) is a neuroendocrine hormone primarily secreted by the pineal gland and also produced in extrapineal tissues such as the retina, lymphocytes, and the cardiovascular (CV) system. This hormone possesses amphiphilic properties, allowing it to penetrate most biological barriers and exert its effects at the subcellular level; it plays an important role in controlling the body's response to circadian rhythms and adjusting to internal and external environmental cues. It also has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiaging properties. Melatonin's secretion is

Ketones and the cardiovascular system.

Ketone bodies, the main one being β-hydroxybutyrate, have emerged as important regulators of the cardiovascular system. In healthy individuals, as well as in individuals with heart failure or post-myocardial infarction, ketones provide a supplemental energy source for both the heart and the vasculature. In the failing heart, this additional energy may contribute to improved cardiac performance, whereas increasing ketone oxidation in vascular smooth muscle and endothelial cells enhances cell proliferation and prevents blood vessel rarefication. Ketones also have important actions in signaling p

Cannabinoids in the Cardiovascular System.

Cannabinoids are known to modulate cardiovascular functions including heart rate, vascular tone, and blood pressure in humans and animal models. Essential components of the endocannabinoid system, namely, the production, degradation, and signaling pathways of endocannabinoids have been described not only in the central and peripheral nervous system but also in myocardium, vasculature, platelets, and immune cells. The mechanisms of cardiovascular responses to endocannabinoids are often complex and may involve cannabinoid CB1 and CB2 receptors or non-CB1/2 receptor targets. Preclinical and some

Lymphatic System in Cardiovascular Medicine.

The mammalian circulatory system comprises both the cardiovascular system and the lymphatic system. In contrast to the blood vascular circulation, the lymphatic system forms a unidirectional transit pathway from the extracellular space to the venous system. It actively regulates tissue fluid homeostasis, absorption of gastrointestinal lipids, and trafficking of antigen-presenting cells and lymphocytes to lymphoid organs and on to the systemic circulation. The cardinal manifestation of lymphatic malfunction is lymphedema. Recent research has implicated the lymphatic system in the pathogenesis o
