BACKGROUND: The emergence and rapid spread of antimicrobial drug-resistance microorganisms exacerbate the treatment of infectious diseases, underscoring the importance of finding new, safe, and effective drugs. In Ethiopia, the roots of Carduus leptacanthus have traditionally been employed to treat microbial infectious diseases The aim of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial activity of the root extract and its primary components against six bacterial strains (Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus agalactiae, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Kleb

BACKGROUND: Carduus marianus is a Mediterranean plant used for treating liver diseases. One of its properties is that it inhibits fat peroxidation, which can contribute toward the prevention of metabolites that are harmful to the liver.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to describe the treatment of fatty liver disease in an axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum).
METHODS: An approximately 6-year-old female specimen of A. mexicanum, of length 21 cm and weight 153 g, presented edema in the rostral region and inappetence. Ultrasound showed hepatopathy and a gallbladder stone. A globule of C. marianus

The invasive thistle Carduus nutans has been reported to be allelopathic, yet no allelochemicals have been identified from the species. In a search for allelochemicals from C. nutans and the closely related invasive species C. acanthoides, bioassay-guided fractionation of roots and leaves of each species were conducted. Only dichloromethane extracts of the roots of both species contained a phytotoxin (aplotaxene, (Z,Z,Z)-heptadeca-1,8,11,14-tetraene) with sufficient total activity to potentially act as an allelochemical. Aplotaxene made up 0.44 % of the weight of greenhouse-grown C. acanthoide

Testicular oxidative stress is one of the most common factors underlying male infertility. Welted thistle, Carduus crispus Linn., and its bioactive principles are attracting scientific interest in treating male reproductive dysfunctions. Here, the protective effects of apigenin isolated from C. crispus against oxidative damage induced by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and dysregulation in spermatogenesis associated parameters in testicular sperm cells was investigated. Cell viabilities, ROS scavenging effects, and spermatogenic associated molecular expressions were measured by MTT, DCF-DA, Western b

The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of 2 different homeopathic prophylactic strategies for the prevention of endometritis. The drugs used were Lachesis compositum (Lachesis), Carduus compositum (Carduus), and Traumeel LT (Traumeel). Each drug contained a mixed formula of homeopathic remedies. All 929 cows received the first treatment within 24 h postpartum. The second to fourth treatments were conducted at 7 to 13, 14 to 20, and 21 to 27 d in milk, respectively. In the first group, the 4 treatments were Traumeel, Lachesis, Carduus, and Carduus, respectively (n = 206). In t

Seven plants which are used in Turkish folk medicine were studied for possible hepatoprotective effects. These plants are Carduus acanthoides and C. nutans (Asteraceae), Cichorium intybus (Asteraceae), Fumaria asepalae and F. vailantii (Fumariaceae), Gentiana olivieri (Gentianaceae) and Plantago lanceolata (Plantaginaceae). Stems, bracts and receptaculum of Cynara scolymus were used as natural reference drugs. Effects of the ethanolic extracts were studied using the carbon tetrachloride-induced hepatotoxicity model in rats. The extracts of F. vailantii and G. olivieri significantly prevented t

Medicinal plants are widely used in the Mediterranean region, where they have long been employed in traditional medicine as well as in the food and beverage industry. At the same time, people in developed countries are increasingly dissatisfied with modern healthcare due to the side effects and complications associated with chemical drugs, prompting a growing interest in more natural alternative treatments. The Asteraceae family is one of the largest flowering plant families, containing many species with medicinal properties. It comprises over 1600 genera and approximately 25,000 species world

Herman Boerhaave (1668-1738), professor of botany, medicine and chemistry at the University of Leyden, attracted students from across Europe, thanks to his didactic qualities, reinforced by bedside teaching. His published writings, often unauthorised, were mainly theoretical and systematic. The more remarkable is the extensive and 'atrocious' case history he published about the 51-year-old nobleman Jan Gerrit van Wassenaer. As courtier and admiral of the Dutch fleet Van Wassenaer was a regular attendant at copious banquets, but at home he used to eat sparingly and sometimes he resorted to emet

Nowadays, bee products are commended by consumers for their medicinal and dietary properties. This study aimed to differentiate between monofloral bee pollens originating from Portugal using phenolic and volatile profiles and investigate their antioxidant and cytotoxic activity. Total phenolic and flavonoid compounds were recorded between 2.9-35.8 mg GAE/g and 0.7-4.8 mg QE/g, respectively. The LC/DAD/ESI-MSn analytical results allowed us to identify and quantify a total of 72 compounds, including phenolic and phenylamide compounds, whereas GC-MS results revealed the presence of 49 different c

Urban meadows are an important component of urban green spaces and have substantial potential for biodiversity conservation. Conventional mowing can enhance plant diversity by altering the niches of dominant herbaceous species, yet it often adversely affects insect communities. Developing appropriate mowing strategies is therefore critical for conserving insects and maintaining multi-trophic biodiversity. In this study, we used a controlled experiment to assess the short-term effects of retaining flowering plants during mowing on plant and insect diversity. Four treatments were established: th

BACKGROUND: Fatty liver disease comprises a wide range of related liver disorders affecting mainly people who drink no or minimal amounts of alcohol. Silymarin is a member of the Carduus marianum family that has been used for centuries to treat different diseases. There is little evidence supporting its efficacy in humans.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effects of Silymarin in patients with non alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) or recently renamed metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD).
METHODS: We searched PubMed, SCOPUS, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library for r

The biotic resistance hypothesis asserts that native species may hinder the invasion of exotic species, which can occur either directly or indirectly by influencing interactions between exotic and local species. Aphid-tending ants may play a key role in the indirect biotic resistance to plant invasion. Ants may protect aphids, thus increasing their negative effect on exotic plants, but may also deter chewing herbivores, thus benefiting exotic plants. We studied native aphid-tending ants (Dorymyrmex tener, Camponotus distinguendus, and Dorymyrmex richteri) on exotic nodding thistles (Carduus th

BACKGROUND: Ethnobotanical studies are crucial in South-Eastern Europe for fostering local development and also for investigating the dynamics of Traditional Environmental Knowledge (TEK) related to plants in one of the most crucial European hotspots for biocultural diversity. The current medico-ethnobotanical survey was conducted in rural alpine communities in Kosovo. The aims of the study were twofold: 1) to document the state of TEK of medicinal plants in these communities; 2) to compare these findings with that of similar field studies previously conducted among local populations inhabitin
