We studied trends in career choices for surgery, and the eventual career destinations, of UK graduates who declared an early preference for surgery. METHODS: Postal questionnaires were sent, at regular time intervals after qualification, to all medical qualifiers from all UK medical schools in selected qualification years between 1974 and 2005. They were sent in the first year after qualification, at year three and five years a

METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 461 medical students, utilizing convenience sampling. Data collection employed a validated, self-administered tool. Statistical analysis in SPSS Version 25 included t-tests and chi-square tests, comparing scores based on age, gender, year of study, and ex

Interdisciplinary health education and career choice in rural and underserved areas.

PURPOSE: To assess the association between an educational rural health interdisciplinary programme (RHIP) and subsequent practice in US rural and underserved locations. METHODS: We carried out a longitudinal cohort study of RHIP students and randomly selected classmate controls for the years 1990-2001, using a mailed survey. OUTCOMES: Main outcome measures were first rural, any rural, first underserved and any underserved practice locations. Multivariate statistical methods were used to calculate prevalence ratios (PRs) by discipline while controlling for possible extraneous variables. RESU

Cardiorespiratory physiotherapy as a career choice-perspective of students and physiotherapists in Portugal.

We investigated Portuguese physiotherapy students' and physiotherapists' (1) perceptions of cardiorespiratory physiotherapy (CRP); (2) factors that influenced their decision to pursue a career in CRP; and (3) suggestions to develop CRP. Online surveys were disseminated to final year students and physiotherapists. A number of 189 students (mean age 23 [SD 6] years; 78% ♀) and 375 physiotherapists (mean age 31 [SD 8] years; 78% ♀) participated. Students' opinions about CRP were positively influenced by lecturers (n = 112, 69%), clinical experiences (n = 110, 68%), and scientific evidence (n = 93

Career choices for cardiology: cohort studies of UK medical graduates.

BACKGROUND: Cardiology is one of the most popular of the hospital medical specialties in the UK. It is also a highly competitive specialty in respect of the availability of higher specialty training posts. Our aims are to describe doctors' early intentions about seeking careers in cardiology, to report on when decisions about seeking a career in cardiology are made, to compare differences between men and women doctors in the choice of cardiology, and to compare early career choices with later specialty destinations. METHODS: Questionnaire surveys were sent to all UK medical graduates in selec

Altering the career choice: can we attract more women to vascular surgery?

Vascular surgery has relied upon the pool of general surgical residents for candidates for residency. This has significantly limited the pool of applicants. With the advent of new primary certificate training paradigms, we investigated factors that might alter the career choices for women medical students. A Web-based survey was conducted of third-year and fourth-year medical students at three university-affiliated programs. A total of 140 students completed the survey, which identified the third year of medical school as the primary year when students committed to a final career choice. Lifes

Are We Missing the Mark? Program Leadership Perceptions of Nephrology Career Choice.

RATIONALE & OBJECTIVE: Interest in nephrology fellowship training remains lower than in many other internal medicine subspecialties. Although prior studies have identified resident-defined factors influencing career choice, it is unclear whether nephrology program leadership accurately recognizes these influences. We evaluated leadership perceptions of factors shaping residents' interest in nephrology and assessed concordance with previously reported resident priorities. Charisma and career pathways: how specialty choice reflects personal charisma among medical residents.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Charisma is a relational construct that may shape communication, leadership behavior, and team dynamics in healthcare settings. It remains unclear whether charisma profiles differ across residents' intended medical specialties. STUDY DESIGN: This study examined the association between intended specialty choice and charisma profiles among Japanese postgraduate residents using a cross-sectional, nationwide, web-based survey conducted between 18 January and 31 March 2024 after a national in-training examination. Of the 9179 postgraduate year one and two residents invited, 5

Exploring motivational and contextual factors influencing medical career choice: a theory-informed study.

BACKGROUND: Career choice in medicine represents a multidimensional decision influenced by motivational, emotional, and sociocultural dynamics. Understanding how these factors interact is essential for developing educational environments that nurture sustained professional commitment. Drawing on the Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) and the Expectancy-Value Theory (EVT), this study explored how self-efficacy beliefs, outcome expectations, task values, and contextual supports shape medical career motivation among first-year medical students. METHODS: A cross-sectional quantitative design w

Understanding career choices of young medical professionals in Bangladesh: a mixed-methods study.

The health workforce in Bangladesh is undergoing demographic and structural changes, including increasing feminization and imbalances in specialty distribution. Understanding career choices among young doctors is important for workforce planning. A concurrent mixed-methods study was conducted in 2023 among 159 young medical professionals. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics, whereas qualitative data from interviews were analysed thematically. The findings from both components were integrated through triangulation, and an ecological model of career progr

Undergraduate surgery clerkship and the choice of surgery as a career: perspective from a developing country.

BACKGROUND: There are concerns regarding a possible decline in the proportion of students choosing surgery as a career in some countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Published works indicate that most students choose their ultimate career during undergraduate training. The present study was undertaken to assess the medical student's perception of the surgery clerkship and determine its influence in the choice of surgery as a career. METHODS: The study involved a cross-sectional survey of 2009 and 2010 graduating medical classes of the University of Nigeria based on self-administered questionnaires.

Factors influencing the career and academic choices of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people.

This is an empirical study of academic and career choices for 119 lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) students using a questionnaire. Respondents who reported that their sexual orientation influenced their choices a great deal indicated that the influences were both positive and negative. This group was most likely to have experienced anti-LGBT discrimination in the past. In comparing lesbian, bisexual people, and gay males, gay males and respondents from visible minorities were the most likely to feel a negative impact, while bisexual respondents were the least likely.
