Huntington's disease caregivers: A qualitative exploration of caregivers experience.

Caring for a family member with Huntington's disease can be complex and challenging. This study set out to investigate the research question: what are the experiences of Huntington's disease caregivers. In this qualitative study, 11 adult caregivers (6 female and 5 male, aged 49-77 years), of a family member with Huntington's disease participated in semi-structured interviews, using either video-link or telephone. Data analysis was informed by interpretative phenomenological analysis. The analysis identified three themes related to the caregiver experience: The impact on the caregiver; The imp

The Impact of Dementia Caregiving on the Health of the Spousal Caregiver.

Dementia caregiving represents a major public health challenge, with spousal caregivers assuming the greatest burden. Spouses, themselves typically older adults, provide high intensity, long-term, and largely unpaid care across all stages of cognitive decline. Despite their central role in dementia care, the health consequences experienced by spousal caregivers remain insufficiently characterized in the literature and inadequately addressed in clinical and public health practice. This structured narrative review synthesizes current evidence on the multidimensional impact of dementia caregiving

Caregivers of victimized children: differences between biological parents and foster caregivers.

Caregivers of children who have been sexually abused often find the experience challenging, especially when the child begins to act out in the home. Many children who have engaged in sexually aggressive, sexually inappropriate, or coercive behaviors with other children are placed in foster care. The purpose of this article is to describe the characteristics of biological parents and their significant others and foster caregivers of sexually aggressive and abusive children. A descriptive, exploratory study was conducted involving 3,149 caregivers (1,764 of them foster caregivers) of more than 8

Assessing health status in informal schizophrenia caregivers compared with health status in non-caregivers and caregivers of other conditions.

BACKGROUND: Research indicates schizophrenia is a cause of burden for patients and caregivers. This study examined health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and comorbidities experienced by informal schizophrenia caregivers compared with non-caregivers and caregivers of adults with other conditions (e.g., Alzheimer's disease, cancer, and stroke). METHODS: Data were obtained from the 5EU (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, UK) National Health and Wellness Survey, an online questionnaire that is representative of the total 5EU adult (18+ years) population. Respondents provided information on HRQoL (SF

Communication between Advanced Cancer Patients and Their Family Caregivers: Relationship with Caregiver Burden and Preparedness for Caregiving.

Cancer impacts spouse caregivers, especially when couples engage in dyadic coping around the cancer. Communication is a key factor in this process. Our goals were to describe cancer-related communication between advanced cancer patients and their spouse caregivers, and to describe how dyadic communication patterns are related to caregivers' reported burden and preparedness for caregiving. Caregivers completed measures of caregiver burden and preparedness for caregiving. Then, the patient and caregiver were asked to interact with each other in two structured discussions: a neutral discussion an

Caregivers' burden analytics: combining variables from patients with dementia and their caregivers.

BACKGROUND: Caregivers caring for patients with dementia could experience depressive symptoms, distress from patients' behavioral symptoms, and physical morbidities. Factors associated with a caregiving burden are complex and vary with time because burden is a subjective measure influenced by physical, economic, and psychosocial strain and has an interaction among caregiver resources, vulnerabilities, and care demands. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the association of patients' and caregivers' factors especially the severity of behavior and psychiatric symptoms of dementia (BPSD) a

Perceived embarrassment and caregiver burden in essential tremor caregivers.

Essential tremor (ET) is a progressive neurological disease associated with functional disability, diminished quality of life and, in some individuals, poorer balance, cognitive impairment, depression and sleep dysregulation. Individuals with ET may rely on family members and friends to act as informal caregivers to assist with daily activities and provide emotional support. There is a high prevalence of embarrassment among individuals with ET, which may be a result of the outwardly visible nature of tremor. Studies in populations with outwardly visible disability have shown that perception by

Caregivers at the crossroads: shifting policies and the challenges faced by employed caregivers.

INTRODUCTION: Family caregiving is receiving increased attention in state and national policy, while caregivers face constrictions in workplace flexibility. METHODS: A survey of employed caregivers in Utah (n = 226) was used to assess how often they reported having trouble managing paid work and caregiving responsibilities, the challenges they encountered in finding balance between roles, and effective strategies for caregivers to manage both roles. RESULTS: Almost half (44%) experienced moderate to severe difficulties balancing paid work and caregiving. Based on open-ended responses, time b

[How family caregivers adapt to Lewy body disease - tracking family caregivers' perceptions of their caregiving relationships].

This one-year longitudinal study examined the relationship between caregivers' perceptions of their caregiving role and their psychological health when supporting individuals with Lewy body disease. The findings indicate that a lack of time and family support significantly affects caregivers' psychological health. Additionally, prioritizing emotion-focused coping strategies over problem-focused strategies is associated with a deterioration in psychological health over time. The study also identified distinct caregiver profiles based on variations in the financial consequences of caregiving, se

Understanding non-traditional caregivers: protocol for a scoping review of caregiver definitions, caregiver networks and outcome measures.

INTRODUCTION: Dementia caregiving is typically provided through a network of multiple individuals, particularly in diverse populations. Although family members of people living with Alzheimer's disease and Alzheimer's disease-related dementias, especially spouses and adult children, often assume the role of informal care partner, there is a growing number of non-traditional informal care partners (ie, non-spousal, non-biological child) given societal changes in family structure. The proposed study aims to systematically review the caregiver literature to better understand how caregivers are de

The crisis of the caregivers.

The crisis of near-drowning for the family and friends of the victim has been well documented. The emergency services personnel also are at risk for crisis as a result of the unique stressors they face because of their involvement with these critically injured young children. Mitchell's model for CISD is a pro-active and positive method for stress recognition, prevention, and reduction. It has particular application for those emergency services personnel who rescue and care for victims of water-related incidents, who are often young children. In this model, professionals are trained to recogni

Needs of family caregivers of stroke patients: a longitudinal study of caregivers' perspectives.

BACKGROUND: After a stroke, patients often suffer from varying degrees of disability that require acute inpatient treatment and extended care at home. Therefore, the caregivers assume multiple responsibilities that can result in stress, particularly when their own needs are inadequately addressed during the patient's recovery. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to explore the changing needs of family caregivers of stroke patients and factors related to the needs in four stages, before the transfer from intensive care unit to neurological unit, before discharge, 2 weeks post-hospitalization, and 3 m

Caregiver Burden in Caregivers of Stroke Survivors: A Hospital-Based Study.

BACKGROUND: A principal caregiver (CG) is directly affected by the patient's health problems leading to CG strain. In the present study, we evaluated the different factors related to increased CG burden in stroke survivors and assessed the relationship between patient's personal and clinical characteristics and CG's stress. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this prospective, follow-up study, a total of 141 principle CGs of 164 First-ever stroke (FES) survivors were subjected to the Caregivers Strain Index (CSI) and Oberst Caregiving Burden Scale (OCBS) at 30 days (n = 141), 90 days (n = 129), and 6 mo

[Involuntary admission to psychiatry at the request of caregivers: The point of view of caregivers].

OBJECTIVES: In France, the family and friends of a patient with a psychiatric disorder can legally be involved in the decision to involuntary admission to psychiatry through care at the request of a third party. This involvement has been questioned in recent years, notably to protect this third party. The main objective of this work was to assess whether providing the third party with information on care without consent when providing care at the request of a third party (SDT) had an impact on the third party's experience. The secondary objectives were to identify other factors that might impa

Traditional and Non-traditional Caregivers Define "Family" and Caregiving Obligations.

Narrow definitions of family can constrain survey items about obligations regarding who should care for older adults. Current measurement often does not account for the increased prevalence of diverse family forms and support received among older adults. We draw on six focus groups (N = 33) of family or friends caring for older adults with trouble remembering, memory issues, or dementia to explore definitions of family, caregiving, and responsibility. Although many caregivers immediately default to traditional definitions, the breadth of "family" seen as responsible and actual care networks ar
