Phytochemical Investigation of Carex praecox Schreb. and ACE-Inhibitory Activity of Oligomer Stilbenes of the Plant.

Phenolic compounds are the main special metabolites of Cyperaceae species from phytochemical, pharmacological, and chemotaxonomical points of view. The present study focused on the isolation, structure determination, and pharmacological investigation of constituents from Carex praecox. Twenty-six compounds, including lignans, stilbenes, flavonoids, megastigmanes, chromenes, and phenylpropanoids, were identified from the methanol extract of the plant. Five of these compounds, namely, carexines A-E, are previously undescribed natural products. All compounds were isolated for the first time from

How functional is a trait? Phosphorus mobilization through root exudates differs little between Carex species with and without specialized dauciform roots.

Root structures secreting carboxylates and phosphatases are thought to enhance a plant's phosphorus (P) acquisition. But do closely related species with and without such structures really differ in root exudation, P mobilization, or ecological niche? We investigated this by comparing 23 European Carex species with and without 'dauciform roots' (DRs). Plants grown in pots with sand were screened for DR formation, phosphatase activities, carboxylate exudation, and utilization of various organic and inorganic P compounds. Ecological niches were compared using ecological indicator values and nutri

Potential of biochar and humic substances for phytoremediation of trace metals in oil sands process affected water.

Oil sands process affected water (OSPW) is produced during bitumen extraction and typically contains high concentrations of trace metals. Constructed wetlands have emerged as a cost effective and green technology for the treatment of metals in wastewaters. Whether the addition of amendments to constructed wetlands can improve metal removal efficiency is unknown. We investigated the synergistic effects of carbon based amendments and wetland plant species in removal of arsenic, cadmium, cobalt, chromium, copper, nickel, and selenium from OSPW. Three native wetland species (Carex aquatilis, Juncu

Phytoremediation of metals in oil sands process affected water by native wetland species.

Process affected water and other industrial wastewaters are a major environmental concern. During oil sands mining, large amounts of oil sands process affected water (OSPW) are generated and stored in ponds until reclaimed and ready for surface water discharge. While much research has focused on organics in process waters, trace metals at high concentrations may also pose environmental risks. Phytoremediation is a cost effective and sustainable approach that employs plants to extract and reduce contaminants in water. The research was undertaken in mesocosm scale constructed wetlands with plant

Degradation kinetics of chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons by methane oxidizers naturally-associated with wetland plant roots.

Chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons (CAHs) are common groundwater contaminants that can be removed from the environment by natural attenuation processes. CAH biodegradation can occur in wetland environments by reductive dechlorination as well as oxidation pathways. In particular, CAH oxidation may occur in vegetated wetlands, by microorganisms that are naturally associated with the roots of wetland plants. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the cometabolic degradation kinetics of the CAHs, cis-1,2-dichloroethene (cisDCE), trichloroethene (TCE), and 1,1,1-trichloroethane (1,1,1TCA)

Stilbenes in Carex acuta and Carex lepidocarpa.

Stilbenes in the roots of Carex acuta and Carex lepidocarpa were studied. Root samples were extracted with 100% methanol and analyzed by HPLC and LC-MS. In this way, trans-resveratrol dimers (m/z 455 Da [M + H]+), trimers (m/z 681 Da [M + H]+) and tetramers (m/z 907 Da [M + H]+) were identified in the extracts. Using LC-NMR in stop-flow mode, pallidol and trans-ε-viniferin as dimers were identified. After the separation of individual peaks and their measurement by 1H NMR, cis and trans-miyabenol A as a tetramer and cis-miyabenol C as a trimer were identified. In the case of miyabenol A, it is

Geometric Morphometrics sheds light on the systematics affinities of two enigmatic dwarf Neotropical sedges (Carex, Cyperaceae).

Geometric morphometrics (GM) is a powerful analytical tool that enables complete quantification of shapes. Its use in Botany has a great potential for complementing plant evolutionary and ecological studies. Taxonomic delimitation in Carex has been complicated due to reduction of characters and frequent homoplasy. This problem is more marked in cases where the species exhibit dwarfism. South America is the continent with the least understood Carex flora. The systematic relationships of some bizarre-looking groups were not unraveled until molecular phylogenetic studies resolved their relationsh

Natural attenuation potential of tricholoroethene in wetland plant roots: role of native ammonium-oxidizing microorganisms.

Bench-scale microcosms with wetland plant roots were investigated to characterize the microbial contributions to contaminant degradation of trichloroethene (TCE) with ammonium. The batch system microcosms consisted of a known mass of wetland plant roots in aerobic growth media where the roots provided both an inoculum of root-associated ammonium-oxidizing microorganisms and a microbial habitat. Aqueous growth media, ammonium, and TCE were replaced weekly in batch microcosms while retaining roots and root-associated biomass. Molecular biology results indicated that ammonium-oxidizing bacteria (

Alpine meadow degradation reshapes diazotroph community assembly and enhances putative recruitment of diazotrophs from legume soils to sedge soils.

INTRODUCTION: Biological nitrogen fixation is a key microbial process sustaining nutrient cycling and plant productivity in nitrogen-limited alpine meadows. However, how alpine meadow degradation reshapes diazotrophic community composition and assembly across different plant species, and how these changes relate to aboveground biomass, remain poorly understood. METHODS: We used the nifH gene as a molecular marker to investigate diazotrophic communities in rhizosphere and bulk soils associated with the legume Oxytropis ochrocephala, and the sedge Carex alatauensis in undegraded and degraded al

Greenhouse Gas Mitigation Potential of Temperate Fen Paludicultures.

Peatlands lose their valuable carbon (C) sink function under intensive land use and turn into greenhouse gas (GHG) emission hotspots. Despite scarce empirical evidence, paludiculture is expected to have significant GHG mitigation potential for organic soils. This study provides the first comprehensive dataset on full GHG balances for newly established fen paludicultures over a water table (WT) gradient spanning an annual mean WT of -0.29 to +0.04 m, stratified into moderately rewetted conditions (-0.30 < WT < -0.10 m) and rewetted conditions (WT ≥ -0.10 m). Mangrove afforestation as an ecological control of invasive Spartina alterniflora affects rhizosphere soil physicochemical properties and bacterial community in a subtropical tidal estuarine wetland.

BACKGROUND: The planting of mangroves is extensively used to control the invasive plant Spartina alterniflora in coastal wetlands. Different plant species release diverse sets of small organic compounds that affect rhizosphere conditions and support high levels of microbial activity. The root-associated microbial community is crucial for plant health and soil nutrient cycling, and for maintaining the stability of the wetland ecosystem. METHODS: High-throughput sequencing was used to assess the structure and function of the soil bacterial communities in mudflat soil and in the rhizosphere soil

Assessing the efficacy and mechanisms of glycol-contaminated water treatment through floating treatment wetlands.

The growing concerns surrounding water pollution and the degradation of ecosystems worldwide have led to an increased use of nature-based solutions (NbSs). This study assessed the feasibility of using floating treatment wetlands (FTWs) as an NbS to treat propylene glycol-contaminated water and quantitatively investigated different removal pathways. With an environmentally relevant concentration of propylene glycol (1,250 mg/L), FTWs containing Acorus calamus and mixed species demonstrated the highest average glycol mass removal efficacy (99%), followed by Carex acutiformis (98%), Juncus effusu

The influence of temperature on nutrient treatment efficiency in stormwater biofilter systems.

Nutrients can cause eutrophication of natural water bodies. Thus, urban stormwater which is an important nutrient source in urbanised areas has to be treated in order to reduce its nutrient loads. Biofilters which use soil filter media, biofilms and plants, are a good treatment option for nutrients. This paper presents the results of a biofilter column study in cold temperatures (+2 degrees C, +8 degrees C, control at +20 degrees C) which may cause special problems regarding biofilter performance. It was shown that particle-bound pollutants as TSS and a high fraction of phosphorus were reduced

When top-down is also bottom-up: Examining consumer-driven nutrient recycling in an arctic herbivore population.

Herbivore consumers represent important top-down and bottom-up forces in ecosystem regulation and an understanding of the zoogeochemical mechanisms of their influences is needed to better understand ecosystem function. The consumer-driven nutrient recycling hypothesis (CNR) provides a framework for linking consumer populations and bottom-up regulation of ecosystem processes due to potential impacts of faecal nutrients on plant nutrient limitation. Here, we examine CNR by evaluating how changes in brown lemming density and foraging behaviour during different phases of their population cycle inf
