The genus Ficus belongs to the Moraceae (the mulberry family). Figs can cause irritant or phototoxic reactions. Phytophotodermatitis is a common cutaneous phototoxic reaction. Contact with plant-derived phototoxic substances (furocoumarins or psoralens) followed by sunlight exposure produces the clinical lesions. Here, we present a case of phytophotodermatitis after contact with fig fruits and leaves. The vesicular dermatitis was primarily located in areas of vitiligo.

Patients presenting with a linear, erythematous, blistering eruption may experience a sudden painful sunburn that seems to get worse rather than better with time. In warm climates, exposure to the common fig tree (Ficus carica) may be the culprit. Dermatologists should recognize fig phytophotodermatitis as a possible cause and help the patient connect their symptoms with the inciting agent as well as administer proper treatment.

High mortality rates of in vitro plants during ex vitro acclimatization, due to low rooting, is one of the main problems of papaya tissue culture. This work was carried out with the objective to obtain 100% hermaphroditic in vitro plants of the papaya cultivar "Maradol Roja" by somatic embryogenesis, which have an adequate rooting system that allows them a higher survival percentage in the ex vitro acclimatization phase. In international scientific literature, there are several protocols; however, not all of them cover the different phases of somatic embryogenesis. This chapter describes a com

Figs (Ficus carica L.) are economically important worldwide, valued for both fruit production and ornamental purposes. Due to the widespread use of vegetative propagation, diverse viruses have accumulated in fig germplasm. To date, more than 14 viruses have been described associated to fig trees, including eight members of the family Closteroviridae, although their role in the etiology of fig mosaic disease (FMD) is unclear. Characteristic symptoms of FMD include mosaic and chlorotic spots on the leaves, along with deformation of fruits and leaves. Fig mosaic virus (FMV) is the causal agent of

The present study demonstrates the biological study of Ficus carica fruit. Methanolic extract of plant fruit was prepared and evaporated under reduced pressure by rota vapor and n- hexane, Chloroform, ethyl acetate and n-butanol soluble fractions were prepared separately from crude methanolic extract. These fractions were then screened for acetyl cholinesterase, butryl cholinesterase and lipoxygenase activities. n-butanol soluble fraction showed significant antiacetylcholinesterase activity (78.55±0.76%) with IC50 of 55.8±0.37µg/ml, ethyl acetate soluble fraction showed significant anti-butryl

The presence and levels of furocoumarins in several parts of Ficus carica including the milky sap, were investigated. The results show that psoralen and bergapten are the only significant photoactive compounds, and are present in appreciable quantities in the leaf and shoot sap but are not detected in the fruit or its sap. These compounds are more concentrated in the leaf sap compared to the shoot sap. The psoralen levels are several times higher than those of bergapten. Lower concentrations of both compounds are present in autumn compared to spring and summer. These findings suggest that the

Carica papaya seed extract is currently being marketed as a nutritional supplement with purported ability "to rejuvenate the body condition and to increase energy". The product claims to improve immunity against common infection and body functioning. The present study was initiated to analyze the chemical constituents of the Carica Seed Extract and determine the potential immunomodulatory properties of the different bioactive fractions. These immunomodulatory activities of crude Carica Seed Extract and its bioactive fractions were examined in vitro using lymphocyte proliferation assays and com

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the gastroprotective and healing effects of the methanolic extract of the seed of the papaya Carica papaya L. (MECP) in rats. Models of acute gastric ulcer induction by ethanol and indomethacin and of chronic ulcer by acetic acid were used. The gastric juice and mucus parameters were evaluated using the pylorus ligation model, and the involvement of sulfhydryl compounds (GSH) and nitric oxide in the gastroprotective effect was analyzed using the ethanol model. The toxicity was assessed through toxicity tests. No signs of toxicity were observed w

BACKGROUND: Photocontact dermatitis to Ficus carica is induced by furocoumarins present in sap. These substances are generally considered to cause phototoxic reactions.
OBJECTIVES: We conducted a patch test and histopathological study of patients with phytophoto contact dermatitis from the fig tree to evaluate the mechanism underlying the photoreaction.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patch and photopatch testing with serial dilutions of two natural furocoumarins [5-methoxypsoralen and 8-methoxypsoralen (8-MOP)] contained in plant sap were performed in 47 patients. A synthetic furocoumarin, 4,5',8-tri

Fig (Ficus carica) is a fruit rich in bioactive compounds with potential health benefits, including the ability to modulate blood glucose levels and reduce oxidative stress. Efficient extraction of these bioactive molecules is essential to enhance their applications in functional and nutraceutical formulations. The efficiency of recovery, however, depends strongly on solvent polarity and extraction parameters. This study evaluated the effect of solvent polarity and extraction time on phytochemical recovery and antioxidant activity of fig powder. The phytochemical evaluation revealed significan

The potential therapeutic effect of Carica papaya leaf juice has attracted wide interest from the public and scientists in relieving dengue related manifestations. Currently, there is a lack of evaluated evidence on its juice form. Therefore, this scoping review aims to critically appraise the available scientific evidence related to the efficacy of C. papaya leaf juice in dengue. A systematic search was performed using predetermined keywords on two electronic databases (PubMed and Google Scholar). Searched results were identified, screened and appraised to establish the association between C.

Dengue, a very widespread mosquito-borne infectious disease caused by Aedes aegypti virus, has been occurring during the monsoons every year. The prevalence and incidence of dengue fever and death due to its complications have been increased drastically in these recent years in Bangladesh, Philippines, Thailand, Brazil, and India. Recently, dengue had spread in an epidemic form in Bangladesh, Thailand, and Philippines. Although the infection affected a large number of people around the world, there is no established specific and effective treatment by synthetic medicines. In this subcontinent,

Two arborists presented acutely with blistering eruptions affecting their forearms, hands, and fingers. The previous day, both men had pruned branches from a large fig tree, Ficus carica, which had sustained damaged during a storm. The following morning, both complained of a burning discomfort which rapidly evolved into erythema and bullae on skin that had been in direct contact with the tree branches. These symptoms gradually resolved over 4 to 6 weeks. Although phytophotodermatitis from Ficus carica has been reported, it is often poorly recognised and there is a need to raise awareness among

Ethanol and aqueous extracts of Carica papaya has been evaluated for its anti hepatotoxic activity. The ethanol and aqueous extracts of Carica papaya showed remarkable hepatoprotective activity against CCl(4) induced hepatotoxicity. The activity was evaluated by using biochemical parameters such as serum aspartate amino transferase (AST), alanine amino transferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase, total bilirubin and gamma glutamate transpeptidase (GGTP). The histopathological changes of liver sample was compared with respect to control.
