Angelica dahurica (A. dahurica) is an important medicinal plant in China; however, its production is affected by viral infections, leading to reduced yields and quality. In this study, we identified a novel carlavirus, tentatively named Angelica carlavirus virus (AnCV), in the leaves of A. dahurica exhibiting mosaic and leaf crinkling symptoms. Notably, the complete genome of AnCV was 8562 nt long and contained six open reading frames, with a genomic organization typical of the genus Carlavirus. AnCV exhibited 44.5-57.8% nucleotide identity at the whole-genome level with known members of the g

Atractylodes lancea is an important medicinal crop, but viral diseases have become increasingly severe in recent years. Viruses in the genus Carlavirus are common plant pathogens that are primarily transmitted by aphids and can cause stunted growth and reduced yields in their host plants. In this study, a novel carlavirus, tentatively named Atractylodes virus A (AVA), was identified from A. lancea plants exhibiting virus-like symptoms. The full-length genome of AVA is 8,817 nt in length and contains six open reading frames, displaying the typical genomic organization of the genus Carlavirus. T

Carlavirus vignae, with the common name cowpea mild mottle virus (CPMMV), has become a widespread carlavirus infecting economically important crops worldwide. CPMMV is transmitted by whiteflies, whereas other members of the Carlavirus genus are generally transmitted by aphids. Recently, the virus has been isolated from various host plants, including cucurbit plants in Brazil, exhibiting a wide genomic variation. Here, we present a comprehensive analysis of CPMMV genome diversity, focusing on the replication-associated protein (Rep) and coat protein (CP) genes, two key genomic regions for Betaf

INTRODUCTION: Hop (Humulus lupulus L.), a vital crop in the brewing industry, is increasingly threatened by infections caused by viroids and viruses. The extensive use of vegetative propagation in hop cultivation facilitates the accumulation and dissemination of these pathogens. However, little is known about their prevalence and ecological behavior in non-commercial settings. This study provides a comprehensive overview of viroid and virus infections across Germany, with particular attention to their occurrence and potential transmission across commercial, settlement, and wild hop populations

Cowpea mild mottle virus (CPMMV) is a carlavirus that is transmitted by whiteflies and can also be spread through seeds in cowpea, soybean, and common bean. Seed transmission of CPMMV has been described in various countries; however, it was only recently reported in Brazil as a seed-transmitted virus in soybean. CPMMV has spread widely in bean-growing areas in recent years. Most Brazilian farmers use harvested grains as seed for reseeding, increasing the risk of seedborne infection. In this study, we examine seed transmission of CPMMV in two bean cultivars using RT-PCR in combination with nucl

BACKGROUND: Viral pathogens causing significant economic losses in lilies (Lilium spp. and hybrids) include Lily symptomless virus (LSV), Lily mottle virus (LMoV), Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV), and Plantago asiatica mosaic virus (PlAMV). Rapid and efficient virus detection methods are pivotal to prevent the spread of these viruses.
RESULTS: In this study, four specific primer pairs designed from conserved regions of genomic sequences of each virus were used to amplify a 116 bp product for LSV, a 247 bp product for LMoV, a 359 bp product for CMV, and a 525 bp product for PlAMV in a multiplex re

Plant viruses cause a variety of diseases in susceptible hosts. The disease symptoms often include leaf malformations and other developmental abnormalities, suggesting that viruses can affect plant development. However, little is known about the mechanisms underlying virus interference with plant morphogenesis. Here, we show that a C-4 type zinc-finger (ZF) protein, p12, encoded by a carlavirus (chrysanthemum virus B) can induce cell proliferation, which results in hyperplasia and severe leaf malformation. We demonstrate that the p12 protein activates expression of a regulator of cell size and

BACKGROUND: Certification of seed potato as free of viruses is essential for stable potato production. Among more than 30 virus species infecting potato, potato leafroll virus (PLRV), potato virus S (PVS), potato virus X (PVX), and potato virus Y (PVY) predominate worldwide and should be the targets of a high-throughput detection protocol for seed potato quarantine.
RESULTS: We developed an assay based on one-step real-time multiplex reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (mRT-PCR) with melt curve analysis for the four viruses and one internal control, potato elongation factor 1 alph

Lily symptomless virus (LSV) is the most common lily virus, being detected in many species and hybrids. We established a microsphere-based fluorescent immunoassay for the determination of LSV, using a polyclonal antibody against LSV covalently bound to carboxy-modified microspheres able to capture LSV antigen. A monoclonal antibody against LSV conjugated to quantum dots (QDs) was used as a fluorescent probe, enabling LSV to be fluorescently detected by a combination of encoded beads and QDs. This method was 16 times more sensitive than ELISA in the detection of LSV, and could potentially be ap

Climatic changes are heavily affecting the sustainability of vegetable crops crucial for food supply worldwide, mainly in subtropical countries. One of the main threats to food security is the spread of diseases caused by plant viruses, favored by irregular rains and extreme temperatures, which reduce crop yield and quality. During a preliminary field survey carried out in two provinces of Angola in 2024, a few symptomatic plants of tomato, habanero pepper, common bean and a wild weed were sampled. These plants generally showed dwarfing, yellowing and leaf curl and were submitted to high-throu
