Chemical Carnivory in Pleurotus: Induced Toxin Droplets Contain 3-Octanone and Candidate Nematicides.

Predatory oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus spp.) immobilize nematode prey using toxin droplets. The chemical composition and regulation of toxin droplet production have remained incompletely characterized since their initial observation over 40 years ago, though 3-octanone has been identified as a possible contributor. We quantified toxin droplet abundance in twenty Pleurotus strains spanning six species and compared their chemical profiles using GC-MS headspace and liquid sampling. Droplet abundance varied among strains and, in most, increased following the addition of washed nematodes. Strains th

Phenotype response for the invasive Petaurus notatus in Tasmania.

A mainland native nocturnal arboreal glider Petaurus notatus (Krefft's Glider) was introduced to Tasmania in the 1830s as a pet and its subsequent escape and landscape spread has been associated with the predation of endemic and migratory birds. Using geometric morphometrics, we assessed whether P. notatus experienced a phenotypic response, visible in their skull, after introduction to Tasmania. We found significant skull form variation between Tasmanian (n = 57) and Victorian (n = 102) glider specimens. Specifically, there is an increase in rostrum length-particularly at the mid-cranium-a dor

Ultrastructural observation of digestive tract and the adaptative characteristics of dietary habits for ground-dwelling and omnivorous insects.

The digestive tract of insects from mouth to anus is the crop, proventriculus, gastric caecum, midgut, ileum, colon and rectum, and the Malpighian tubules attached to the ileum belong to the excretory organs. As the main organs for digesting food and absorbing nutrients, the structure of the insect digestive tract is inevitably adapted to feeding habits. Among the Orthoptera, the digestive tracts of phytophagous locusts and carnivorous katydids have been studied for their adaptations to their food habits, while the adaptations of the digestive tracts of omnivorous insects have been less studie

TaphoSource: An open-source database of experimentally generated bone surface modifications for modeling taphonomic processes.

Bone surface modifications (BSMs) provide data for modeling predator-prey dynamics and trophic interactions in the fossil record. However, the utility of BSM data depends on our ability to correctly infer which unobservable actions or ecological agents produced these marks, and commonly used qualitative methods may be insufficient to discriminate among BSMs that exhibit substantial macromorphological overlap. Recently, quantitative BSM identification methods have been employed to overcome this taphonomic equifinality, which, despite their methodological rigor, remain underused because they req

The feeding apparatus of ants: an overview of structure and function.

Ants are a dominant family of eusocial terrestrial insects with a diversity of ecologies, lifestyles and morphologies. Ant diet preferences range from strict carnivory through omnivory to almost complete herbivory in species feeding on seeds or exudates of plant-sucking insects. While several studies have investigated ant feeding performance on different substrates, comparatively little is known about the functional morphology of the structures involved in food uptake or their diversification across the ants. To take stock of our current knowledge, we give an overview of how adult ants ingest

Roots to simplicity: when evolution removes a key organ.

The evolution of roots was an instrumental event in the colonisation of land by vascular plants. Roots have undergone extensive radiation and can take many diverse forms including taproots, fibrous roots, and adventitious roots. This includes specialist root types, such as pneumatophores in mangroves, that have allowed species to occupy new ecological niches. In some cases, the relationship between roots and soil has been broken, rendering roots unnecessary and ultimately resulting in loss of this organ in some species. We identify several ecological niches/life habits in which rootless vascul

Convergent evolution of an extreme dietary specialisation, the olfactory system of worm-eating rodents.

Turbinal bones are key components of the mammalian rostrum that contribute to three critical functions: (1) homeothermy, (2) water conservation and (3) olfaction. With over 700 extant species, murine rodents (Murinae) are the most species-rich mammalian subfamily, with most of that diversity residing in the Indo-Australian Archipelago. Their evolutionary history includes several cases of putative, but untested ecomorphological convergence, especially with traits related to diet. Among the most spectacular rodent ecomorphs are the vermivores which independently evolved in several island systems

Behavioral biology of Toxoplasma gondii infection.

Toxoplasma gondii is a protozoan parasite with a complex life cycle and a cosmopolitan host range. The asexual part of its life cycle can be perpetually sustained in a variety of intermediate hosts through a combination of carnivory and vertical transmission. However, T. gondii produces gametes only in felids after the predation of infected intermediate hosts. The parasite changes the behavior of its intermediate hosts by reducing their innate fear to cat odors and thereby plausibly increasing the probability that the definitive host will devour the infected host. Here, we provide a short desc

Infections of Two Isthmiophora Species (Digenea: Echinostomatidae) in Wild Mammals from Republic of Korea with Their Morphological Descriptions.

Isthmiophora hortensis (Digenea: Echinostomatidae) is a dominant echinostome in animal reservoir hosts and humans in the Republic of Korea (Korea). We intended to investigate the infection status with this echinostome species in the several species of wild animals and describe the morphological characteristics in the faunistic view point. A total of 175 animal carcasses belonging to 3 families, i.e., Canidae, Felidae and Mustelidae, were collected from the southern regions of Korea from March 2010 to July 2017. Isthmiophora spp. worms were recovered from the small intestines of each animal und

Using host traits to predict reservoir host species of rabies virus.

Wildlife are important reservoirs for many pathogens, yet the role that different species play in pathogen maintenance frequently remains unknown. This is the case for rabies, a viral disease of mammals. While Carnivora (carnivores) and Chiroptera (bats) are the canonical mammalian orders known to be responsible for the maintenance and onward transmission of rabies Lyssavirus (RABV), the role of most species within these orders remains unknown and is continually changing as a result of contemporary host shifting. We combined a trait-based analytical approach with gradient boosting machine lear

PREVALENCE OF ANTIBODIES TO SELECTED VIRUSES AND PARASITES IN INTRODUCED AND ENDEMIC CARNIVORES IN WESTERN MADAGASCAR.

Introduced animals impact endemic populations through predation, competition, and disease transmission. Populations of endemic carnivores in Madagascar are declining, and pathogens transmitted from introduced species may further endanger these unique species. We assessed the exposure of introduced and endemic carnivores to common viral and parasitic pathogens in two national parks of Madagascar (Kirindy Mitea National Park and Ankarafantsika National Park) and their neighboring villages. We also identified variables associated with the presence of antibodies to these pathogens in fosa ( Crypto

Characterizing felid tooth marking and gross bone damage patterns using GIS image analysis: an experimental feeding study with large felids.

In recent years there has been much disagreement over the nature of carnivore involvement in Early Pleistocene zooarchaeological assemblages. This partially reflects the lack of reliable ways to identify the taphonomic signatures of different large carnivore taxa. It is often unclear which carnivore taxon or taxa may have played a role in forming or modifying faunal assemblages found associated with stone tools, and this lack of clarity impacts reconstructions of hominin behavior. The mode, frequency and nutritional yield of carcasses acquired by hominins, and the extent to which hominin forag

Can a carnivore diet provide all essential nutrients?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The aim of this study was to summarize current contributions affecting knowledge and predictions about the nutritional adequacy of plant-free diets, contextualized by historical accounts. RECENT FINDINGS: As demonstrated in recent experiments, nutrient interactions and metabolic effects of ketogenic diets can impact nutritional needs, sometimes resulting in nutrient-sparing effects. Other studies highlight conflicting hypotheses about the expected effect on metabolic acidosis, and therefore mineral status, of adding alkaline mineral-rich vegetables. SUMMARY: A carnivore di

A new family of bizarre durophagous carnivorous marsupials from Miocene deposits in the Riversleigh World Heritage Area, northwestern Queensland.

A new specimen of the bizarrely specialised Malleodectes mirabilis from middle Miocene deposits in the Riversleigh World Heritage Area provides the first and only information about the molar dentition of this strange group of extinct marsupials. Apart from striking autapomorphies such as the enormous P3, other dental features such as stylar cusp D being larger than B suggest it belongs in the Order Dasyuromorphia. Phylogenetic analysis of 62 craniodental characters places Malleodectes within Dasyuromorphia albeit with weak support and without indication of specific relationships to any of the

Effects of experimental exclusion of scavengers from carcasses of anthrax-infected herbivores on Bacillus anthracis sporulation, survival, and distribution.

Scavenging of anthrax carcasses has long been hypothesized to play a critical role in the production of the infectious spore stage of Bacillus anthracis after host death, though empirical studies assessing this are lacking. We compared B. anthracis spore production, distribution, and survival at naturally occurring anthrax herbivore carcasses that were either experimentally caged to exclude vertebrate scavengers or left unmanipulated. We found no significant effect of scavengers on soil spore density (P > 0.05). Soil stained with terminally hemorrhaged blood and with nonhemorrhagic fluids exhi

Oral Route Infection by Trypanosoma cruzi: From the Beginning to the Present Day.

Trypanosoma cruzi is the causative agent of Chagas disease, which affects 6-7 million people worldwide. Although the possibility of oral transmission was first scientifically suggested in 1913, it was not until 1968 that the first confirmed cases of human infection via food consumption were reported. This long gap contributed to the widespread perception that oral transmission was a rare or incidental event. Over the past two decades, significant advances have been made in understanding the biological and clinical aspects of oral transmission, including the molecular mechanisms by which metacy

Cretaceous zhelestid mammals are zalambdalestoids.

Placental mammals (the clade that includes bats, primates and whales) developed highly varied molars as they diversified in the Palaeogene, indicating derived diets such as carnivory and herbivory1. Cretaceous eutherian stem taxa to Placentalia had, however, more conservative dentitions-typically molars with high, sharp cusps for insectivory. The discovery 38 years ago of molars of Late Cretaceous zhelestid mammals2 with relatively low (bunodont) cusps, convergent with those of herbivorous placental ungulates, suggested a previously unknown Cretaceous radiation of more placental-like fossils3-

Human attacks by large felid carnivores in captivity and in the wild.

Whereas those who live in the native ranges of the large feline carnivores are well aware of the risks of cat and human encounters, North Americans and Europeans are increasingly exposed to exotic animals through travel, ecotourism, leisure pursuits in rural areas, occupational exposure, zoo and animal park visits, wild habitat encroachment at the urban-wildlands interface, and contact with exotic pets. In encounters during which persons have been severely injured, lapses in animal management protocols, lack of appropriate adult supervision, and intoxication have been reported. Unlike common d
