Antilisterial Properties of Selected Strains from the Autochthonous Microbiota of a Swiss Artisan Soft Smear Cheese.

High incidences of the foodborne pathogen Listeria monocytogenes have been reported on smear cheeses, and despite increased hygiene efforts, this incidence has remained stable in recent years. Applying antilisterial strains may increase the safety of smear cheeses. To find and test antilisterial strains, we inoculated fresh soft cheeses from nine dairies with the surrogate species Listeria innocua and assessed its growth under standardized ripening conditions. Acetic acid at day 23 (r = -0.66), lactose in fresh cheese (r = -0.63), and glucose at day 10 (r = -0.62), as well as seven amplicon se

Effectiveness of Exogenous Fe2+ on Nutrient Removal in Gravel-Based Constructed Wetlands.

A group of microcosm-scale unplanted constructed wetlands (CWs) were established to evaluate the effectiveness of exogenous Fe2+ addition on ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N), nitrate nitrogen (NO3--N), and total phosphorus (TP) removal. The addition of Fe2+ concentrations were 5 mg/L (CW-Fe5), 10 mg/L (CW-Fe10), 20 mg/L (CW-Fe20), 30 mg/L (CW-Fe30), and 0 mg/L (CW-CK). The microbial community in CWs was also analyzed to reveal the enhancement mechanism of pollutant removal. The results showed that the addition of Fe2+ could significantly (p < 0.05) reduce the NO3--N concentration in the CWs. When 10

Reviewing the Pathogenic Potential of the Otitis-Associated Bacteria Alloiococcus otitidis and Turicella otitidis.

Alloiococcus otitidis and Turicella otitidis are common bacteria of the human ear. They have frequently been isolated from the middle ear of children with otitis media (OM), though their potential role in this disease remains unclear and confounded due to their presence as commensal inhabitants of the external auditory canal. In this review, we summarize the current literature on these organisms with an emphasis on their role in OM. Much of the literature focuses on the presence and abundance of these organisms, and little work has been done to explore their activity in the middle ear. We find

Extended local similarity analysis (eLSA) reveals unique associations between bacterial community structure and odor emission during pig carcasses decomposition.

Soil burial and composting methods have been widely used for the disposal of pig carcasses. The relationship between bacterial community structure and odor emission was examined using extended local similarity analysis (eLSA) during the degradation of pig carcasses in soil and compost. In soil, Hyphomicrobium, Niastella, Rhodanobacter, Polaromonas, Dokdonella and Mesorhizobium were associated with the emission of sulfur-containing odors such as hydrogen sulfide, methyl mercaptan and dimethyl disulfide. Sphingomonas, Rhodanobacter, Mesorhizobium, Dokdonella, Leucobacter and Truepera were associ

Development of High-Level Daptomycin Resistance in Abiotrophia and Granulicatella Species Isolates from Patients with Infective Endocarditis.

Abiotrophia and Granulicatella species are fastidious organisms, representing the causative agents of ∼1% to 3% of cases of infective endocarditis (IE). Little is known about the optimal antibiotic treatment for these species, and daptomycin has been suggested as a therapeutic option. We describe the antimicrobial profiles of Abiotrophia and Granulicatella IE isolates, investigate high-level daptomycin resistance (HLDR) development, and evaluate daptomycin activity in combination therapy. In vitro studies with 16 IE strains (6 Abiotrophia defectiva strains, 9 Granulicatella adiacens strains, a

Inter-site and interpersonal diversity of salivary and tongue microbiomes, and the effect of oral care tablets.

Background: Oral microbiota has been linked to both health and diseases. Specifically, tongue-coating microbiota has been implicated in aspiration pneumonia and halitosis. Approaches altering one's oral microbiota have the potential to improve oral health and prevent diseases. Methods: Here, we designed a study that allows simultaneous monitoring of the salivary and tongue microbiomes during an intervention on the oral microbiota. We applied this study design to evaluate the effect of single-day use of oral care tablets on the oral microbiome of 10 healthy individuals. Tablets with or without

Exploring the microbiota of upper respiratory tract during the development of pneumonia in a mouse model.

The alteration of the microbial community in the upper respiratory tract (URT) can contribute to the colonization and invasion of respiratory pathogens. However, there are no studies regarding whether the characteristics of the URT microbiota can be affected by infections in lower respiratory tract (LRT). To elucidate the microbial profiles of the URT during pneumonia, the oral, nasal, and lung microbiota was evaluated at the early phase in a murine pneumonia model by direct intratracheal inoculation of Klebsiella pneumoniae. The meta 16S rRNA sequencing of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid after K

Microbial Community Analysis of Saliva and Biopsies in Patients With Oral Lichen Planus.

The specific etiology and pathogenesis of oral lichen planus (OLP) remain elusive, and microbial dysbiosis may play an important role in OLP. We evaluated the saliva and tissue bacterial community of patients with OLP and identified the colonization of bacteria in OLP tissues. The saliva (n = 60) and tissue (n = 24) samples from OLP patients and the healthy controls were characterized by 16S rDNA gene sequencing and the bacterial signals in OLP tissues were detected by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) targeting the bacterial 16S rDNA gene. Results indicate that the OLP tissue microbio

Liver abscess due to Granulicatella adiacens in an immunocompetent patient: Case report.

Pyogenic liver abscesses due to Granulicatella adiacens are infections associated with high mortality, mainly in immunocompromised patients. The main microorganisms associated with liver abscesses are Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Escherichia coli, though it may also be polymicrobial. However, case reports describing liver infection by Granulicatella adiacens are scarce. We present the case of an immunocompetent adult patient who presented 15 days of evolution consisting of quantified fever peaks associated with asthenia, adynamia, chills, jaundice and coluria. The initial clinical examination re

Persistent Left Superior Vena Cava in the Setting of Granulicatella adiacens Bactermia and Crescentic Glomerulonephritis.

Persistent left superior vena cava is a rare congenital condition, that is, commonly found to be asymptomatic in affected patients. Such pathology can lead to dilatation of the coronary arteries, creating a favorable environment for bacterial growth. We present a case of Granulicatella adiacens bacteremia ultimately leading to renal failure in the setting of an IgA-dominant infection-associated glomerulonephritis. Our case highlights the importance of multimodal imaging for the diagnosis of this unusual vascular anomaly, as well as the management of this atypical etiology of high-grade bactere

Clinical Microbial Identification of Severe Oral Infections by MALDI-TOF Mass Spectrometry in Stockholm County: an 11-Year (2010 to 2020) Epidemiological Investigation.

Growing evidence suggests that oral infections can modify the course of systemic diseases. To date, epidemiological data on microbial oral infections are scarce. Here, we performed a comprehensive analysis of the trend and microbial diversity in oral infection specimens referred for clinical microbiology analysis from 2010 to 2020. The microbes were isolated by culture and were identified via matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry technology (MALDI-TOF MS) throughout the study period. A total of 1,014 referred samples from dental clinics in Stockholm Count

Granulicatella adiacens subacute bacterial endocarditis as the underlying cause of type II mixed cryoglobulinaemia.

A 57-year-old man with type II mixed cryoglobulinaemia presented to the emergency department with a history of worsening lethargy, malaise and non-drenching night sweats in a relapsing-remitting pattern. He was diagnosed with type II mixed cryoglobulinaemia 7 months ago following episodes of fever, night sweats, lethargy and malaise associated with a non-blanching, purpuric, raised erythematous rash that responded partially to immunosuppressive therapy and short courses of oral antibiotics. A single blood culture then yielded Granulicatella adiacens which was reported as a possible contaminant

Description of Bernardella vulneris gen. nov., sp. nov., assignable to the family Aerococcaceae, isolated from human clinical samples.

Eleven novel Gram-stain-positive, catalase- and oxidase-negative coccal bacterial isolates recovered mostly from the wounds of patients located in three Canadian provinces were extensively studied. Phenotypic analysis and phylogenetic analysis based on both the 16S rRNA gene and whole-genome sequence place them in the family Aerococcaceae and differentiate them from genera in the closest families Enterococcaceae and Carnobacteriaceae in the order Lactobacillales. The G+C content of the isolates was on average 42.15 mol% with genome sizes ranging from 1.87 to 2.04 Mb. The average nucleotide ide

Dolosigranulum savutiense sp. nov., isolated from human upper respiratory samples collected in Botswana.

Four strains (MSK211, MSK294T, MSK312, MSK433) of a novel Dolosigranulum species were cultured from nasopharyngeal swabs collected from mother-infant dyads in southern Botswana. These strains grew optimally on tryptic soy agar with 5% sheep blood solid medium and in fastidious bacteria broth. Colonies on tryptic soy agar with 5% sheep blood agar appeared grey or white with a flat, smooth surface and variable alpha haemolysis. Cells were Gram-positive, non-spore-forming, non-motile cocci that lacked catalase or oxidase activity. Major fatty acids were C16 : 0 (palmitic acid), C18 : 1 ω9c (oleic

Synergistic inhibition of pneumococcal growth by Dolosigranulum pigrum and Corynebacterium pseudodiphtheriticum: insights into nasopharyngeal microbial interactions.

Streptococcus pneumoniae is a nasopharynx colonizer that can invade sterile tissues, causing invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD). Dolosigranulum pigrum and Corynebacterium pseudodiphtheriticum are commensal bacteria commonly isolated from the nasopharynx of healthy children, potentially playing a protective role. This study aims to analyze the effects of D. pigrum and C. pseudodiphtheriticum on S. pneumoniae in vitro growth. Pneumococcal strains were collected from IPD patients and healthy carriers in Catalonia (2016-2023). D. pigrum and C. pseudodiphtheriticum strains were isolated from a hea
