Advancing successful treatments for carpal instabilities of the wrist are hindered due, in part, to limited preclinical animal models. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the forelimb of the Yucatan minipig (YP) as a potential preclinical animal model for the human wrist by quantifying carpal biomechanics in vitro in the intact and after two ligament transection conditions. Porcine wrist biomechanics (n = 12, 5M, 7F) were determined in 28 range of motion (ROM) directions, in pronation-supination, and in volar-dorsal translation using a six-axis robotic musculoskeletal simulator. Testing

We report the morphogenesis of a new mouse mutant, Doublefoot (Dbf). The major phenotypic features involve the limb and craniofacial regions. There is polydactyly of all 4 limbs, with typically 6-8 digits per limb. All of the digits are triphalangeal; some show bifurcations and some are not attached to the carpus/tarsus. The carpus and tarsus are broader than normal, and their elements are partially fused. There are also tibial defects. Mutant embryos show a diencephalic bulge on d 10.0, with older animals exhibiting broadened and bulbous skulls sometimes with an additional midline skeletal el

PRACTICAL RELEVANCE: Feline carpal injuries are usually caused by falls from a height that result in hyperextension injury or antebrachiocarpal luxation or subluxation. Isolated ligamentous damage or fracture of the carpus is unusual; it is more common to have a combination of both in the cat. These injuries can be debilitating since cats climb and jump from great heights, and have a greater range of antebrachial pronation and supination than dogs.
ANATOMY: There are differences in the anatomy of the feline and canine carpus. In particular, cats only have a single short radial collateral liga

An 18-month-old llama was admitted with severe (45 degrees and 40 degrees) bilateral carpal valgus. The llama had grown normally until it was 6 months old, when the carpal deviations had commenced. Radiography revealed abnormalities at the distal ulnar physes. Premature closure of these physes or abnormal distal ulnar growth may have been the cause of the carpal valgus. The owners requested surgical correction of the condition. Medial wedge osteotomies of each radius were performed 3 weeks apart. Internal fixation of the osteotomized radial bones was accomplished with small right-angled T plat

SUBJECT MATTER AND OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to display clinically relevant anatomical structures of the carpal region in healthy horses with the help of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-eight forelimbs from 15 adult horses without orthopedic diseases were examined. Following native CBCT examination a mixture of hyperattenuating contrast medium with blue epoxy resin dye was injected in the antebrachiocarpal joint and middle carpal joint and contrast-enhanced CBCT scans were also acquired. Subsequently, the limbs were frozen and sawed in different

The ultrasonographic anatomy of the accessory ligament of the superficial digital flexor tendon (AL-SDFT) in the horse is presented. Comparison between anatomical sections of isolated limbs and ultrasound scans of the distal antebrachium in sound horses enabled the authors to establish the normal reference ultrasonographic images of this structure. The AL-SDFT inserts 7-14 cm above the antebrachiocarpal joint on the palmaromedial aspect of the radius. Ultrasonographically it appears as an uniformly echogenic structure located deep to the median artery. The knowledge of ultrasonographic anatomy

A 2-mo-old, 90-kg, intact male camel (Camelus dromedarius) was admitted for surgical removal of a supernumerary digit associated with the medial aspect of the right carpus and metacarpus. Radiographic views of the carpus and metacarpus revealed the supernumerary digit articulating with the middle carpal joint via an extra carpal bone. The supernumerary digit consisted of three bones. Surgical removal of the supernumerary digit was recommended to restore normal limb conformation, limit the possibility of future lameness, and improve the cosmetic appearance of the limb. Complete surgical removal

A 2 month old quarter horse colt had multiple skeletal abnormalities of the left fore limb, including two supernumerary metacarpal bones, two supernumerary carpal bones, abnormal carpal bone development, and a valgus deformity originating at the carpal joint. The largest supernumerary metacarpal bone was removed completely, a portion of the smaller supernumerary metacarpal bone was removed, and the leg was placed in a tube cast. Surgical treatment improved the clinical appearance and prevented further injury to the limb. The carpal joint width remained increased but the carpal valgus deformity

OBJECTIVE: To report metacarpal fracture repair in a bull.
STUDY DESIGN: Clinical report.
ANIMALS: Simmental bull (n = 1; 870 kg).
METHODS: A comminuted right metacarpal fracture was repaired using 2 transfixation pins (6 mm diameter) through the distal metaphysis and diaphysis of the radius and a full limb synthetic resin cast.
RESULTS: Slight bending of both pins occurred 1 day after surgery. Both pins were loose and removed at 31 days and a full-limb cast reapplied. The cast was changed at approximately -4 week intervals. On day 50, the right carpus had moderate overextension and a valg

In a series of 4 species of owls and 12 species of diurnal raptors, an additional bone was present bilaterally in the area of the carpus. Designating the bone as an "additional bone of the raptorial carpal region" is suggested pending appropriate embryological studies to determine the origin of the bone. Generally, the bone was present in owls and in diurnal raptors with relatively short, rounded wings, but was absent in species with longer, more tapered wings. The bone lies at the cranial edge of the carpal area near the radial carpal bone, and is fixed to the surrounding skeleton by ligament

BACKGROUND: The carpus is a complicated and functionally challenged mechanical system, advancements in the understanding of which have been compromised by the recognition that there is no standard carpal mechanical system and no typical wrist. This paper covers components of a larger project that seeks to develop a kinetic model of wrist mechanics to allow reverse analysis of the specific biomechanical controls or rules of a specific patient's carpus. Those rules, unique to each patient, could be used to create a forward synthesis mathematical model to reproduce the individual's anatomical mot

Congenital malformations in cattle pose a diagnostic challenge with limited treatment options and are often associated with a guarded prognosis. The aim of this study was to characterize the clinicopathological phenotype of a viable calf with complex congenital heart defects and carpus valgus, and to identify a possible genetic cause using a whole genome sequencing trio approach. A 3-month-old female Holstein calf was referred for respiratory distress and congenital carpal deviation. Clinicopathologic findings included ventricular septal defect, ventricular dilatation, atrioventricular valve d

As a pathologist, postmortem examination of the equine carpus can be daunting. The anatomy is complex and oftentimes, small or subtle lesions have significant impact on lameness and secondary lesions such as catastrophic musculoskeletal fractures and other injuries. In performance horses, particularly racehorses, the carpus is a common site of injury and source of lameness. Given the predisposition of racehorses to developing carpal disease, familiarity with clinically relevant anatomy and common developmental, degenerative, traumatic, and inflammatory processes are imperative for thorough pos

A recent study hypothesized that avian-like wrist folding in quadrupedal dinosaurs could have aided their distinctive style of locomotion with semi-pronated and therefore medially facing palms. However, soft tissues that automatically guide avian wrist folding rarely fossilize, and automatic wrist folding of unknown function in extant crocodilians has not been used to test this hypothesis. Therefore, an investigation of the relative contributions of soft tissues to wrist range of motion (ROM) in the extant phylogenetic bracket of dinosaurs, and the quadrupedal function of crocodilian wrist fol

Partial arthrodesis was performed for carpal hyperextension injury in a dog. T-plate application for middle carpal and carpometacarpal arthrodesis was associated with low patient morbidity and allowed normal pet activity without clinical lameness. Radiography revealed bony healing of arthrodesed joints, reactive bone formation over the dorsal aspect of the plate, and periarticular osteophyte formation. A guarded prognosis is advised for degenerative joint disease that may lead to decreased range of motion of the antebrachiocarpal joint.

A four-month-old West Highland White Terrier was presented to the Small Animal Teaching Hospital at the University of Liverpool with the complaint of a bilateral angular carpal deformity. A 20° valgus deformity was present in both thoracic limbs, centred on the distal radial physes. Both distal ulnas were grossly thickened and there was concomitant thickening of the rostral mandible and calvarium. The dog exhibited signs of resentment on palpation of the mandible and signs of pain were elicited on flexion and extension of both elbow joints. No signs of pain were evident on palpation of the uln

Traumatically induced lateral subluxation of the accessory carpal bone in a dog resulted in chronic lameness with weight-bearing instability. Accessorioulnar carpal joint arthrodesis was performed, using one interfragmentary lag screw and a cancellous bone graft. The lameness subsided and clinical function has remained excellent for 32 months. Low-grade osteoarthritis of other carpal joints has progressed, but may relate to other damage sustained at the time of initial injury. Focal intercarpal joint arthrodesis in this dog provided clinical function that far surpassed that of pancarpal arthro
