Antimycobacterial activity of Juglans regia, Juglans mollis, Carya illinoensis and Bocconia frutescens.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis is a serious worldwide health threat, killing almost 2 million people per year. Alternative antimycobacterial drugs are urgently needed; studies have shown that medicinal plants traditionally used to treat respiratory diseases are a potential source of compounds to treat tuberculosis. This paper studied the antimycobacterial activity of 28 extracts from four different plant species that have been used in traditional Mexican medicine to treat tuberculosis. Bark and leaf crude extracts of Juglans regia L., Juglans mollis Engelm., Carya illinoensis (Wangenh) K. Koch and

An effective enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay-based method for quantification of gibberellic acid in pecan (Carya illinoinensis).

Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) is a reliable and low-cost method for quantifying gibberellic acid (GA) in plants but applying this method to certain plant tissues is challenging due to tissue hardness and/or contents rich in metabolites. Pecan (Carya illinoinensis) tissues in the bud and bark are examples of such tissues. This study aimed to establish an effective ELISA-based GA quantification method for these pecan tissues. We tested how different amounts of the tissues and the weight ratios of a tissue to the solvent methanol affected the detection of GA. We also tested whether he

Comprehensive effects of N, P, K, and Zn formulated fertilization on growth, physiology, and seedling quality of Carya illinoensis.

Optimizing fertilizer application is critical for balancing plant growth promotion, economic efficiency, and environmental sustainability. For Carya illinoensis (pecan), a high-value nut tree, balanced nutrient management of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), and zinc (Zn) is essential to enhance seedling vigor and establishment success. However, the optimal formulations of N, P, K, and Zn for maximizing seedling quality remain undetermined. This study employed an L9(34) orthogonal design to evaluate the integrated effects of N, P, K, and Zn combinations on growth, physiological trai

Functional characterization of CiCIPK8 and CiCIPK11 reveals their roles in osmotic stress via CBL-CIPK signaling in pecan (Carya illinoinensis).

Osmotic stress severely limits plant growth and agricultural productivity, primarily by disrupting cellular water balance. Although the CBL-CIPK signaling network is recognized as a central mediator of abiotic stress responses, the functions of CiCIPKs from pecan (Carya illinoinensis) in osmotic stress tolerance remain largely unclear. In this study, two osmotic stress-responsive genes, CiCIPK8 and CiCIPK11, were cloned and functionally characterized via heterologous expression in Arabidopsis. Under mannitol-induced osmotic stress, transgenic lines exhibited significantly enhanced seed germina

CiSPL31, an SPL transcription factor, promotes fruit enlargement and increases fruit size by upregulating SEPALLATA2 and LONGIFOLIA 3 in pecan (Carya illinoinensis).

The SQUAMOSA PROMOTER BINDING PROTEIN-LIKE (SPL) family has been implicated in various plant growth and developmental processes; however, its role in flowering and fruit development remains poorly characterized in pecan (Carya illinoinensis). In this study, we identified 32 SPL genes in the pecan genome and divided them into six groups which displayed structurally conserved within groups but show structural divergence between groups. they Furthermore, transcriptome and RT-qPCR analysis indicated that CiSPL31 was highly expressed in flower buds and early developing fruits. Identification of the bHLH transcription factor family and functional characterization of CibHLH141 and CibHLH127 in response to iron deficiency stress of pecan (Carya illinoinensis).

The basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) gene family plays vital roles across various plant species. However, the bHLH family has not been reported in pean (Carya illinoinensis). In this study, 164 CibHLHs were identified, exhibiting high evolutionary conservation as revealed by gene structure, conserved motifs, domains, and collinearity analyses. Promoter analysis revealed that many CibHLHs contain cis-acting elements related to abiotic stress responses. CibHLH141 and CibHLH127 were significantly upregulated in both leaves and roots of pecan under iron deficiency. The subcellular localization invest

Control of Pecan Weevil With Microbial Biopesticides.

The pecan weevil, Curculio caryae (Horn) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), is a key pest of pecans Carya illinoinensis ([Wangenh.] K. Koch) (Fagales: Juglandaceae). Control recommendations rely on broad spectrum chemical insecticides. Due to regulatory and environmental concerns, effective alternatives for C. caryae control must be sought for pecan production in conventional and organic systems. We explored the use of microbial biopesticides for control of C. caryae in Georgia pecan orchards. Three experiments were conducted. The first investigated an integrated microbial control approach in an org

Ancient structural variants control sex-specific flowering time morphs in walnuts and hickories.

Balanced mating type polymorphisms offer a distinct window into the forces shaping sexual reproduction strategies. Multiple hermaphroditic genera in Juglandaceae, including walnuts (Juglans) and hickories (Carya), show a 1:1 genetic dimorphism for male versus female flowering order (heterodichogamy). We map two distinct Mendelian inheritance mechanisms to ancient (>37 million years old) genus-wide structural DNA polymorphisms. The dominant haplotype for female-first flowering in Juglans contains tandem repeats of the 3' untranslated region of a gene putatively involved in trehalose-6-phosphate

Removal of tetracyclines from aqueous solutions by electrocoagulation/pecan nutshell coupling processes: synergistic effect and mechanism.

The present work compared electrocoagulation (EC)/pecan shell (PS) coupling process with a simple electrocoagulation (EC) process for the removal of tetracyclines (TCs). The results indicated that the addition of appropriate PS could lead to the enhancement of the removal efficiency and decrease of operating time via synergistic influence, including conventional EC process, biomass materials adsorption, charge neutralization and coordination adsorption. The ideal condition for the coupling process was 2.5 mA/cm2 for current density and 3 cm for plate spacing. Based on the optimum condition, wh

Effects of controlled atmosphere and storage temperature on the quality of shelled 'Barton' pecan nuts during long-term storage.

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of controlled atmosphere (CA) storage at a low oxygen partial pressure (pO2; 2 kPa of O2) and low pO2 associated with high pCO2 (2 kPa O2 + 15 kPa CO2) in relation to ambient atmospheric conditions (control), at different temperatures, on shelled 'Barton' pecan nuts quality after storage. Color, respiration rates, moisture content (MC), and oxidation markers, such as peroxide value (PV), acidity value (AV), and volatile compounds (VC), were evaluated. During six months of storage, the MC decreased in all CA treatments, and treatments at 10 °C had the lo

Comparative metabolomics of resistant and susceptible pecan leaflets uncovers early defense responses to scab infection.

BACKGROUND: Pecan scab (Venturia effusa) is a devastating fungal disease affecting commercial pecan production. Developing resistant cultivars remains the most sustainable strategy, but this has been hindered by limited mechanistic understanding of resistance and the presence of diverse pathogen pathotypes. Current resistance phenotyping methods rely on microscopic assessments, which are labor-intensive and prone to inconsistency due to sample preparation and interpretation variability. METHODS: A pathway-based metabolomics approach combined with machine learning was employed to identify earl

Effect of Slope Grain on Mechanical Properties of Different Wood Species.

The aim of the presented study is to determine the relationship between mechanical parameters of selected wood species (Carya sp., Fagus sylvatica L., Acer platanoides L., Fraxinus excelsior L., Ulmus minor Mill.) used for the production of hand tools and drumsticks and the grain deviation angle from the rectilinear pattern. Modulus of rupture (MOR), modulus of elasticity (MOE), elastic strain and work to maximum load (WML) in the three-point bending test were determined. The results obtained show that the values of all the mechanical parameters measured for hickory wood are higher than those

Distinct ancient structural polymorphisms control heterodichogamy in walnuts and hickories.

The maintenance of stable mating type polymorphisms is a classic example of balancing selection, underlying the nearly ubiquitous 50/50 sex ratio in species with separate sexes. One lesser known but intriguing example of a balanced mating polymorphism in angiosperms is heterodichogamy - polymorphism for opposing directions of dichogamy (temporal separation of male and female function in hermaphrodites) within a flowering season. This mating system is common throughout Juglandaceae, the family that includes globally important and iconic nut and timber crops - walnuts (Juglans), as well as pecan

Extraction of bioactive compounds from pecan nutshell: An added-value and low-cost alternative for an industrial waste.

The pecan nutshell [Carya illinoinensis (Wangenh) C. Koch] (PNS) is a source of bioactives with important beneficial properties for the human health. PNS represents between 40-50 % of total mass of the nut, resulting as waste without any added value for the food industry. Even though a variety of methods were already developed for bioactive extraction from this waste, unconventional methodologies, or those which apart from green chemistry principles, were discarded considering the cost of production, the sustainable development goals of United Nations and the feasibility of real inclusion of t

A Quantitative Assessment of the Risk of Human Salmonellosis Arising from the Consumption of Pecans in the United States.

A quantitative risk assessment was conducted to assess the risk of human salmonellosis acquired from consumption of pecans in the United States. The model considered the potential for Salmonella survival, growth, and recontamination of pecans from the sheller to the consumer, including steps such as immersion in water, drying, conditioning, cracking, partitioning, and storage. Five theoretical microbial reduction treatment levels (1 to 5 log CFU) were modeled. Data from the 2010 to 2013 surveys by the National Pecan Shellers Association were used for initial prevalence and contamination levels

Immunomodulatory Activity of Pecan-Derived Peptides: Targeting Cyclophosphamide-Mediated Immune Dysregulation.

Pecan (Carya illinoensis) contains bioactive peptides with immunomodulatory potential. This study identified three pecan peptides─RWEF, LWPL, and FLLR─and evaluated their effects in cyclophosphamide-induced immunosuppressed mice. Peptide treatment significantly restored immune organ indices and biomarkers. Specifically, RWEF increased spleen acid phosphatase (ACP) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) by 31.2 and 40.0%, respectively; FLLR elevated ACP by 39.3% and LDH by 17.6%; and LWPL increased by 29.3 and 27.8% (all p < 0.01 compared to the model). The peptides also normalized blood cell counts a
