Portal vein thrombosis related to Cassia angustifolia.

INTRODUCTION: Cassia angustifolia (Senna), used as a laxative, is a plant from the Fabaceae family. It includes hydroxyanthracene glycosides, also known as Senna Sennoside. These glycosides stimulate the peristalsis of the colon and alter colonic absorption and secretion resulting in fluid accumulation and expulsion. In the literature, there are reports illustrating the hepatotoxic effects of Cassia angustifolia but there is no report of portal vein thrombosis caused by Cassia Angustifolia. CASE REPORT: A 42-year-old woman was admitted to the emergency department with a five-day history of wo

Antiplasmodial activity of the ethnobotanical plant Cassia fistula.

In our ongoing investigation of new compounds with activity against malaria parasites, we tested the in vitro antiplasmodial activity of fractions and purified compounds from Cassia fistula L., a plant traditionally used by native populations of Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Brazil to treat malaria or symptoms associated with this disease. Crude extracts from leaves, bark and fruits were tested for their antiplasmodial activity against the chloroquine-sensitive strain of Plasmodium falciparum (D10), where leaf extracts showed the highest activity. The chloroform extract of the leaves was

The effects of Cassia abbreviata on rat blood pressure.

The effects of a crude extract of the stem bark of Cassia abbreviata on mean arterial pressure in anaesthetized rats were investigated. Bolus injections of the stem bark elicited a transitory fall in blood pressure which was dose-dependent. The depressor response was not blocked by atropine nor propranolol thus indicating that muscarinic and beta 2 receptors are not involved. However it was partially blocked by diphenhydramine, and H1 antagonist. The latter also partially blocked the depressor response to histamine which is mediated partially through both H1 and H2 receptors. It is concluded t

Demethyltorosaflavone C from Cassia nomame inhibits nitric oxide production.

In RAW264 macrophages, demethyltorosaflavone C (DTFC)-luteolin derivative from Cassia nomame-suppressed lipopolysaccharide-induced nitric oxide production without cytotoxicity. DTFC exhibited no nitric oxide radical scavenging activity but downregulated inducible nitric oxide synthase and cyclooxygenase-2 at protein and mRNA levels, indicating anti-inflammatory effects through pathways similar to those of luteolin. These results suggest that DTFC appears to have potential comparable to luteolin.

A stimulatory effect of Cassia occidentalis on melanoblast differentiation and migration.

In vitiligo, the active melanocytes in the epidermis are totally missing, whereas melanoblast cells in the outer root sheath of hair follicles are not affected. In an attempt to find potent repigmenting agents for vitiligo therapy, pod extracts of Cassia occidentalis was found to be effective in inducing differentiation and migration of mouse melanoblast cell line. Methanolic extract redissolved in DMSO at 12.5 μg/ml was found to cause 3.5- to 3.8-fold melanin induction in melb-a melanoblast cells after 4 days in treatment medium. In addition it induced the tyrosinase activity and altered melb

Cinnamomum cassia Alleviates Neuropsychiatric Lupus in a Murine Experimental Model.

Background: The pathogenesis of neuropsychiatric lupus erythematosus (NPSLE) is very complex and is associated with neuroinflammation and blood-brain barrier compromise. Experimental investigations of NPSLE have classically relied on spontaneous models. Recently, TLR7 agonist-induced lupus has been shown to exhibit similar neuropsychiatric manifestations to spontaneous ones. Cinnamon is a widespread spice and natural flavoring agent. It has been proven to modulate vascular endothelial tight junctions, neuroinflammation, and autoimmunity pathways, but it has never been tested in relation to lup
