[Eye injuries in the dog caused by cat claws].

A retrospective study of ocular cat claw injuries in the dog revealed an over-representation of very young dogs in our case material. Puppies up to the age of 12 weeks have no menace response. Thus, an important protective mechanism is missing in early life. This may be one reason for the frequently occurring severe ocular trauma caused by cat claw injuries in puppies. Older dogs are less likely to sustain such an injury. Cat claw injuries cause corneal and lens capsule perforation with ensuing severe phacoclastic uveitis. In our series phthisis bulbi or secondary glaucoma were the result in 5

Threat under cats' claws: Molecular detection and risk factors for zoonotic Bartonella species in blood and claw samples from cats in Brazil.

Bartonelloses are zoonoses widely dispersed throughout the world caused by bacteria of the genus Bartonella. Domestic cats play an important role in the epidemiology of bartonelloses, since these animals are considered natural hosts of B. henselae, B. koehlerae and B. clarridgeiae. This study aimed to determine the occurrence of Bartonella spp. in domestic cats' blood and claw samples in the southern region of Bahia, northeastern Brazil. Additionally, the main clinical and hematological changes in Bartonella-positive animals were investigated, as well as the risk factors associated with the in

Delayed removal of a cat claw from the caruncle of a pediatric patient.

Periocular injuries secondary to animal scratches in children can be dangerous and associated with high morbidity. We present a case of a delayed extrusion of a cat claw from the caruncle of a pediatric patient 11 days after the initial injury. The patient was seen immediately after the injury in the emergency department, when no foreign bodies were noted. He returned to the same emergency department after partial spontaneous extrusion. The claw was removed by the ophthalmology service.

Biofilm formation on cat claws by Sporothrix species: An ex vivo model.

This work aimed to evaluate the ability of Sporothrix species to attach and form biofilm on the surface of cat claws as an ex vivo model. A total of 14 strains (5 Sporothrix brasiliensis, 3 Sporothrix schenckii s. str., 3 Sporothrix globosa and 3 Sporothrix mexicana) were used. The biofilms were incubated for periods of 01, 03, 07, 10 and fifteenth 15 days. Their metabolic activities were evaluated by the XTT reduction assay and the morphology and structure were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The analysis of the SEM images revealed that all the species can form biofilms on

Eye trauma from a cat scratch with retention of the claw in the anterior chamber in a dog.

BACKGROUND: Cat scratches and ocular foreign bodies are frequent reasons for consultation in veterinary ophthalmology. CASE DESCRIPTION: We here present an unusual case combining trauma to the cornea and lens by a cat scratch with retention of the claw in the anterior chamber. Management consisted of the removal of the claw, reconstruction of the cornea, and mechanized ablation of the lens by phacoemulsification with implantation of an artificial lens. CONCLUSION: The progression during the follow-up period was considered satisfactory, with positive responses to visual tests and intraocular

The polymicrobial nature of the oral cavity and claws of cats diagnosed by mass spectrometry and next-generation sequencing.

Close contact between cats and humans increases the risk of transmission of zoonotic pathogens, through bites and scratches due to the complexity of microorganisms in the oral and nail microbiotas of felines. This study investigated the presence of bacteria and fungi in the oral cavity and claws of 100 apparently healthy cats using conventional and selective microbiological culture media, and next-generation sequencing (NGS) and mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). Furthermore, antimicrobial susceptibility testing of bacteria isolates was performed by disc diffusion method. In total, 671 bacteria

Isolation of Sporothrix schenckii from the claws of domestic cats (indoor and outdoor) and in captivity in São Paulo (Brazil).

Sporotrichosis is a subcutaneous mycosis and is also a zoonosis (sapro- and anthropozoonosis). The objective of the present study was to determine the occurrence of sporotrichosis in domestic cats and in wild or exotic felines in captivity through the isolation of Sporothrix spp. from claw impressions in a culture medium. The samples included 132 felines, of which 120 (91.0 %) were domestic cats, 11 (8.3 %) were wild felines, and one (0.7 %) was an exotic felid. Twenty-one (17.5 %) were outdoor cats. Of the total, 89 (67.4 %) had contact with other animals of the same species. It was possible

Presence of Bartonella species and Rickettsia species DNA in the blood, oral cavity, skin and claw beds of cats in the United States.

The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of Bartonella species and Rickettsia species DNA in the blood, oral cavity, skin and claw beds of feral cats without evidence of skin disease that were housed in Alabama (n = 24), Florida (n = 27) and Colorado (n = 32). Samples were assessed by use of polymerase chain reaction assays. The Bartonella species IgG prevalence was also determined. While Bartonella species DNA was not amplified from any sample from Colorado cats, it was commonly amplified from blood (56.9%), skin (31.4%), claws (17.6%) and gingiva (17.6%) of the 51 cats house

The Effect of Gabapentin on the Efficiency of a Desensitization-Counter-Conditioning Claw-Trimming Protocol for Cats with Healthcare Phobias: A Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Crossover Trial.

Feline healthcare phobia is a major challenge in veterinary practice, limiting medical care and increasing stress for cats, owners, and veterinarians. Traditional desensitization-counter-conditioning (DS-CC) protocols aim to reduce fear responses, but their success is limited in sensitized cats. This study evaluates whether gabapentin can improve the efficiency of DS-CC training in healthcare phobia in cats. Forty-two sensitized cats participated in a claw-trimming learning protocol. Using a double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial, the cats followed 10 training sessions: the first 5 u

Severe Delirium and Refractory Bradycardia Associated With Uncaria tomentosa Toxicity: A Case Report.

Uncaria tomentosa (cat's claw) is an Amazonian medicinal vine widely used for its anti-inflammatory properties. While generally safe at therapeutic doses, its active oxindole alkaloids can precipitate profound cardiovascular and central nervous system (CNS) toxicity in supratherapeutic amounts. We present a case of a 53-year-old female who presented with severe insomnia, anxiety, and gastrointestinal distress following an attempt to self-wean from a high-dose, over-the-counter cat's claw supplement. Her hospital course was complicated by severe delirium requiring intensive care and persistent,

Development of a highly reproducible system to evaluate inhibition of cytochrome P450 3A4 activity by natural medicines.

PURPOSE: In recent years, a number of natural medicines have been reported to have inductive or inhibitive effects on the activity of drug metabolizing enzymes, upon co-administration with prescribed medicines. However, information regarding natural medicine-drug interactions that influence drug metabolism is limited owing to the lack of efficient screening method for such interactions. Therefore, to understand whether P450 activity is affected by natural medicine in small intestines, we have established frozen recombinant P450-expressing cells infected with human CYP3A4 expressing adenovirus

Uncaria tomentosa (Willd. ex. Roem. & Schult.) DC. and Eucalyptus globulus Labill. interactions when administered with diazepam.

The safety of natural drugs is defined by their side effects and toxicity as well as any interactions that may occur if taken together with other drugs. In particular, it is essential to identify synergies, antagonisms and other types of interference with other drugs so that the correct choice can be made from the range of phytomedicines available. The aim of this work was to investigate changes in the pharmacological effect of diazepam (2 mg/kg) on the CNS when administered together with a medicinal plant: Eucalyptus globulus Labill. (eucalyptus 6 mg/kg and 3.25 mg/kg) or Uncaria tomentosa (W

Uncommon dermatologic manifestation (paronychia) in a cat with diabetes mellitus.

A 3.5-year-old male intact domestic short hair cat presented for a chronic wound and crusts over the claw and claw folds over several months. The cat was diagnosed with diabetes mellitus based on the presence of persistent hyperglycemia, glucosuria, and compatible clinical signs which consist of polyuria, polydipsia, polyphagia, and weight loss. Glipizide (Glucotrol XL, Pfizer, Indonesia) 2.5 mg orally twice daily was prescribed. By the seventeenth day, the patient's claws and skin around the paw had normalized and the abnormal claw sloughed off, revealing a normal claw underneath. Blood gluco

Malassezia pachydermatis and M nana predominate amongst the cutaneous mycobiota of Sphynx cats.

Carriage of Malassezia species yeasts in healthy Sphynx cats was compared with that in Devon Rex cats (DRC), Cornish Rex cats (CRC) and domestic shorthair (DSH) cats. Swab samples from the external ear, anus and claw folds, and contact plate samples from the axillae and groins, were incubated on modified Dixon's agar at 32°C for 7 days. Malassezia species were isolated from all 18 Sphynx cats; M pachydermatis accounted for 118/140 isolates. Of 20 isolates of M nana, 16 were recovered from the ear canal. M slooffiae was isolated from the claw fold of one cat and the left groin of another. The h

Sporothrix spp. Biofilms Impact in the Zoonotic Transmission Route: Feline Claws Associated Biofilms, Itraconazole Tolerance, and Potential Repurposing for Miltefosine.

Sporotrichosis is the most prevalent subcutaneous mycosis globally, and it is typically caused by direct inoculation of the soil saprophytic fungus Sporothrix spp. into the patients' skin. However, sporotrichosis has an important zoonotic transmission route between cats and humans in hot-spot endemic areas such as Brazil. Antifungal itraconazole is the first-line treatment; however, it is frequently associated with recurrence after withdrawal, mainly on cats. Biofilms are important resistance structures related to the environmental persistence of most microorganisms. In the present work, we ev
