Chromosome abnormalities in peripheral blood lymphocytes from Macaca fascicularis and Erythrocebus patas (Cercopithecidae, Catarrhini) after X-ray irradiation.

In this paper, we describe the results of a qualitative and quantitative study of chromosomal reorganizations in X-irradiated (1 Gy and 2 Gy) lymphocytes from Macaca fascicularis (MFA) and Erythrocebus patas (EPA). A total of 515 breakpoints in M. fascicularis and 271 breakpoints in E. patas have been detected, identified and localized in the ideogram of the species. The Chi square test indicates that the distribution of breakpoints along the chromosomes is not random in M. fascicularis, and is not random for the p and q arms and bands in both species. Chromosome 5 of M. fascicularis (MFA5), c

Multilevel atlas comparisons reveal divergent evolution of the primate brain.

Whether the size of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) in humans is disproportionate when compared to other species is a persistent debate in evolutionary neuroscience. This question has left the study of over/under-expansion in other structures relatively unexplored. We therefore sought to address this gap by adapting anatomical areas from the digital atlases of 18 mammalian species, to create a common interspecies classification. Our approach used data-driven analysis based on phylogenetic generalized least squares to evaluate anatomical expansion covering the whole brain. Our main finding suggests

CCR5 chemokine receptor gene evolution in New World monkeys (Platyrrhini, Primates): implication on resistance to lentiviruses.

The CC chemokine receptor 5 (CCR5) gene of primates encodes a transmembrane protein involved in cellular signaling of some cell types of the immune system. Numerous studies have shown that this peptide is used by lentiviruses in conjunction with the CD4 receptor to mediate binding and entry in target cells of human and non-human primates. New World monkeys (NWM), differently from their African counterparts, have no description of in natura lentivirus infection. Some evidences suggest that a blockage occurs at the viral entry step of infection. To investigate this possibility, we have cloned an

Different modes of Mhc evolution in primates.

The human major histocompatibility complex (Mhc) is a chromosomal segment approximately 4 million bp long that contains > or = 84 genes. Some of these genes code for the class I and class II molecules, while the remaining genes code for complement components, cytochrome P450, tumor necrosis factor, and many other, unrelated proteins. We demonstrate on three examples (DP, C4-CYP21, and DRB) that different regions of the Mhc have different evolutionary histories. The organization of the DP region, which in humans contains four genes, was established in the ancestral Anthropoidea or earlier and h

Sex chromosome systems in Neotropical Primates: What have we learnt so far from cytogenetics and genomics?

Neotropical Primates (Platyrrhini) show great diversity in their life histories, ecology, behaviour and genetics. This diversity extends to their chromosome complements, both to autosomes and to sex chromosomes. In this contribution, we will review what is currently known about sex chromosomes in this group, both from cytogenetic and from genomic evidence. The X and Y chromosomes in Neotropical Primates, also known as New World Monkeys, have striking structural differences compared with Old World Monkeys when Catarrhini sex chromosomes are considered. The XY bivalent displays a different meiot

[Peculiarities of the distribution of Cryptosporidia (Coccidia: Cryptosporydiidae) in monkeys in an apery].

A total of 520 monkeys belonging to 6 species (Macaca mullata, M. fascicularis, M. nemestrina, Cercopithecus aethiops, Papio anubis, and P. hamadrias) were investigated. Total frequency of occurrence of the protozoan Cryptosporidium in the Adler apery constituted 13.8%. The majority of parasites were found in animals with intestinal disorders such as diarrhea. The lowest frequency of cryptosporidias occurrence was revealed in clinically healthy monkeys. Among sick monkeys, the invasion was most common in infants under one year of age. Cryptosporidiosis is rarely found just as it is, and, as a

A proximal radius of Barberapithecus huerzeleri from Castell de Barberà: Implications for locomotor diversity among pliopithecoids.

Pliopithecoids are a diverse group of Miocene catarrhine primates from Eurasia. Their positional behavior is still unknown, and many species are known exclusively from dentognathic remains. Here, we describe a proximal radius (IPS66267) from the late Miocene of Castell de Barberà (Vallès-Penedès Basin, NE Iberian Peninsula) that represents the first postcranial specimen of the pliopithecoid Barberapithecus huerzeleri. A body mass estimate based on the radius is compared with dental estimates, and its morphology is compared with that of extant and fossil anthropoids by qualitative means as well

Metric Variation in Pliopithecoid Mandibular Molars From the Late Miocene Fossil Locality of Rudabánya, Hungary.

OBJECTIVES: Rudabánya II (RII) is a 10-million-year-old fossil locality in Hungary that preserves a rich assemblage of vertebrate fossils, including specimens attributed to the pliopithecoid Anapithecus hernyaki. The RII dental remains of this stem catarrhine vary in mandibular molar morphology, particularly in the length and degree of tapering of the M3. The goal of this study is to quantify metric variation in the RII fossil pliopithecoid mandibular dental sample and determine if it exceeds variation in extant anthropoid taxa. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using a bootstrapping approach, we compar

New hominoid fossils from Moroto II, Uganda and their bearing on the taxonomic and adaptive status of Morotopithecus bishopi.

The early Miocene site of Moroto II, Uganda has yielded some of the oldest known hominoid fossils. A new partial mandible (UMP MORII 03'551) is notable for its long tooth row and large, narrow M2 with well-developed cristids - a morphological combination previously unknown for large bodied catarrhines of the Early Miocene and suggesting folivory. The tooth proportions are compatible with belonging to the same taxon as the maxilla UMP 62-11, the holotype of Morotopithecus bishopi; likewise, the long tooth row and vertical planum of UMP MORII 03'551 suggest that it may represent the same taxon a

Ulnar morphology of Pliobates cataloniae (Pliopithecoidea: Crouzeliidae): Insights into catarrhine locomotor diversity and forelimb evolution.

Pliobates cataloniae is a small-bodied crouzeliid pliopithecoid from the Miocene (∼11.6 Ma) of Abocador de Can Mata (ACM; Vallès-Penedès Basin, NE Iberian Peninsula). It exhibits a mosaic of primitive (stem catarrhine) and derived (modern hominoid-like) postcranial features. The holotype partial skeleton, from locality ACM/C8-A4, includes an almost complete ulna-a bone that plays a critical role in forearm flexion-extension and pronation-supination. Here, we use landmark-based three-dimensional geometric morphometrics to evaluate the closest morphometric affinities of the Pliobates ulna and ex

The role of developmental rate, body size, and positional behavior in the evolution of covariation and evolvability in the cranium of strepsirrhines and catarrhines.

Recent studies on hominin craniofacial evolution have focused on phenotypic integration or covariation among traits. Covariation is thought to significantly affect evolutionary trajectories, shaping the ways in which hominins and other primates could have evolved. However, the ways in which covariation itself evolves are not well understood. This study aims to investigate the role of phylogeny, development, body size, and positional behavior in shaping the strength of covariation in strepsirrhine and catarrhine primate crania (n = 1009, representing 11 genera). These factors may have been cata

Examination of magnitudes of integration in the catarrhine vertebral column.

The evolution of novel vertebral morphologies observed in humans and other extant hominoids may be related to changes in the magnitudes and/or patterns of covariation among traits. To examine this, we tested magnitudes of integration in the vertebral column of cercopithecoids and hominoids, including humans. Three-dimensional surface scans of 14 vertebral elements from 30 Cercopithecus, 32 Chlorocebus, 39 Macaca, 45 Hylobates, 31 Pan, and 86 Homo specimens were used. A resampling method was used to generate distributions of integration coefficient of variation scores for vertebral elements ind

New primate first metatarsals from the Paleogene of Egypt and the origin of the anthropoid big toe.

The specialized grasping feet of primates, and in particular the nature of the hallucal grasping capabilities of living strepsirrhines and tarsiers (i.e., 'prosimians'), have played central roles in the study of primate origins. Prior comparative studies of first metatarsal (Mt1) morphology have documented specialized characters in living prosimians that are indicative of a more abducted hallux, which in turn is often inferred to be related to an increased ability for powerful grasping. These include a well-developed peroneal process and a greater angle of the proximal articular surface relati

Early catarrhine evolution in the light of semicircular canal and vestibule shape.

The phylogenetic relationships of early catarrhines (Old World monkeys and apes) are contentious, particularly regarding pliopithecoids, which are considered a clade of Miocene stem catarrhines more derived than most of their Oligocene counterparts. However, their debated affinities and the uncertain phylogenetic relationships of the Oligocene catarrhine Saadanius leave their systematic position unresolved. Notably, Saadanius displays a mosaic morphology, coupling primitive craniodental traits with a fully ossified ectotympanic (as opposed to the annular/incompletely ossified ear tube of stem

Pattern and pace of dental eruption in Tarsius.

This article uses data on the dental eruption pattern and life history of Tarsius to test the utility of Schultz's rule. Schultz's rule claims a relationship between the relative pattern of eruption and the absolute pace of dental development and life history and may be useful in reconstructing life histories in extinct primates. Here, we document an unusual eruption pattern in Tarsius combining early eruption (relative to molars) of anterior replacement teeth (P2 and incisors) and relatively late eruption of the posterior replacement teeth (C, P3, and P4). This eruption pattern does not accur

Occurrence of Antibodies Anti-Toxoplasma gondii in Captive Non-Human Primates From Pernambuco State, Brazil.

Wildlife captive populations are important tools for threatened species conservation, and early identification of diseases must be prioritized. In this study, we test for the presence of anti-Toxoplasma gondii antibodies in non-human primates at a Zoo from Pernambuco State, Brazil. A Modified Agglutination Test (MAT ≥ 25) was carried out on serum samples from 28 individuals of nine species (Ateles chamek, Ateles marginatus, Ateles paniscus, Chlorocebus aethiops, Papio anubis, Papio hamadryas, Lagothrix lagotricha, Sapajus flavius, and Sapajus libidinosus) from two parvorders (Catarrhini and Pl

Face selective patches in marmoset frontal cortex.

In humans and macaque monkeys, socially relevant face processing is accomplished via a distributed functional network that includes specialized patches in frontal cortex. It is unclear whether a similar network exists in New World primates, who diverged ~35 million years from Old World primates. The common marmoset is a New World primate species ideally placed to address this question given their complex social repertoire. Here, we demonstrate the existence of a putative high-level face processing network in marmosets. Like Old World primates, marmosets show differential activation in anterior

Functional and developmental influences on intraspecific variation in catarrhine vertebrae.

OBJECTIVES: We tested whether patterns of intraspecific variation in catarrhine vertebral shape are consistent with developmental or functional predictions. Intraspecific variation was compared across column regions, morphological features, and species. Transitional regions and later ossifying morphological features were predicted to exhibit increased variation. The lumbosacral region, biomechanically important morphological features, and species with high locomotor demand and/or dedicated pronogrady were predicted to exhibit decreased variation. Placement of the diaphragmatic vertebra in catarrhines: implications for the evolution of dorsostability in hominoids and bipedalism in hominins.

A fundamental adaptation to orthograde posture and locomotion amongst living hominoid primates is a numerically reduced lumbar column, which acts to stiffen the lower back and reduce injuries to the intervertebral discs. A related and functionally complementary strategy of spinal stability is a caudal position of the diaphragmatic vertebra relative to the primitive condition found in nonhominoid primates and most other mammals. The diaphragmatic vertebra marks the transition in vertebral articular facet (zygapophysis) orientation, which either resists (prediaphragmatic) or allows (postdiaphrag

Convergent evolution through independent rearrangements in the primate amylase locus.

Structurally complex genomic regions can foster evolutionary convergence by repeatedly generating gene duplications that yield similar expression patterns and traits across lineages. Focusing on the primate amylase locus, we leveraged high-quality genome assemblies from 53 primate species and multi-tissue transcriptomes from Old World monkeys to reconstruct the evolutionary history of recurrent duplications. We show that lineage-specific long terminal repeat retrotransposon insertions may be associated with initial structural instability, while subsequent duplications are primarily driven by n
