Enduring mental health in the Baltimore epidemiologic catchment area follow-up study.

PURPOSE: To estimate the prevalence of enduring mental health (EMH) and examine important correlates of EMH 23 years later in the Baltimore Epidemiologic Catchment Area Follow-Up study. METHODS: We estimated the prevalence of EMH among 964 adults with diagnostic data at all four study waves (1981-2004). Those with EMH were compared to those with any mental or behavioral disorder by demographic, psychosocial, and health characteristics. We used forward selection models to identify the most important predictors of EMH. RESULTS: Twenty-six percent of participants met criteria for enduring menta

Application of the Population Health Institute Model of Health for Identifying Cancer Catchment Area Priorities.

PURPOSE: The University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute (PHI) Model of Health, grounded in models developed over a decade ago, provides a framework for prioritizing health-related investments including setting agendas, implementing policies, and sharing resources for improving community health and health equity. The model includes multiple determinants of health and two broad health outcomes (length and quality of life). We adapted the PHI Model of Health to cancer outcomes. METHODS: Using county-level publicly available data, health factor summary measures were derived in three area

Multi-modal two-step floating catchment area analysis of primary health care accessibility.

Two-step floating catchment area (2SFCA) techniques are popular for measuring potential geographical accessibility to health care services. This paper proposes methodological enhancements to increase the sophistication of the 2SFCA methodology by incorporating both public and private transport modes using dedicated network datasets. The proposed model yields separate accessibility scores for each modal group at each demand point to better reflect the differential accessibility levels experienced by each cohort. An empirical study of primary health care facilities in South Wales, UK, is used to

Jewish Americans and mental health: results of the NIMH Epidemiologic Catchment Area Study.

Data from the Epidemiologic Catchment Area Study showed that the overall lifetime rate of psychiatric disorder among Jews did not differ from the rate among non-Jews. However, there was a significant difference between Jewish and non-Jewish samples when comparing the distribution of specific psychiatric disorders. Compared with Catholics and Protestants, Jews had significantly higher rates of major depression and dysthymia, but lower rates of alcohol abuse. Jews were more likely than Catholics or Protestants to seek treatment with mental health specialists and general practitioners. These diff

Catchment area and cancer population health research through a novel population-based statewide database: a scoping review.

BackgroundPopulation-based linked datasets are vital to generate catchment area and population health research. The novel Cancer Information and Population Health Resource (CIPHR) links statewide cancer registry data, public and private insurance claims, and provider- and area-level data, representing more than 80% of North Carolina's large, diverse population of individuals diagnosed with cancer. This scoping review of articles that used CIPHR data characterizes the breadth of research generated and identifies further opportunities for population-based health research.MethodsArticles publishe

Taking chances: problem gamblers and mental health disorders--results from the St. Louis Epidemiologic Catchment Area Study.

OBJECTIVES: This study determined prevalence estimates of problem gambling and relationships to other psychiatric and substance use disorders. METHODS: In 1981, the Diagnostic Interview Schedule was used to collect epidemiological information on problem gambling and other disorders from 3004 adults in St. Louis, Mo. RESULTS: The lifetime prevalence of pathological gambling was 0.9%; 46% of those surveyed gambled recreationally. Problem gamblers (those reporting at least one gambling-related problem) were 9.2% of the sample and were predominately White (69%), male (78.2%), and young than nong

Distribution of Ixodes scapularis in Northwestern Ontario: Results from Active and Passive Surveillance Activities in the Northwestern Health Unit Catchment Area.

The range of Ixodes scapularis is expanding in Ontario, increasing the risk of Lyme disease. As an effective public health response requires accurate information on disease distribution and areas of risk, this study aims to establish the geographic distribution of I. scapularis and its associated pathogen, B. burgdorferi, in northwestern Ontario. We assessed five years of active and passive tick surveillance data in northwestern Ontario. Between 2013 and 2017, 251 I. scapularis were submitted through passive surveillance. The submission rate increased over time, and the proportion infected wit

A Population Health Assessment in a Community Cancer Center Catchment Area: Triple-Negative Breast Cancer, Alcohol Use, and Obesity in New Castle County, Delaware.

BACKGROUND: The NCI requires designated cancer centers to conduct catchment area assessments to guide cancer control and prevention efforts designed to reduce the local cancer burden. We extended and adapted this approach to a community cancer center catchment area with elevated rates of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). METHODS: Cancer registry data for 462 TNBC and 2,987 "Not-TNBC" cases diagnosed between 2012 and 2020 at the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center & Research Institute (HFGCCRI), located in New Castle County, Delaware, were geocoded to detect areas of elevated risk (hot spots) an

Regional health care profiles - an improved method for generating case studies on the catchment areas of envisaged primary health care units in Austria: a report to the InfAct Joint Action.

BACKGROUND: The recent Austrian Primary Care Act established new primary health care units (PHCUs) and obliged them to draw up a "care strategy" specifying their focal care tasks and objectives and emphasizing the health care needs of the population in their catchment area with its specific local health and epidemiological profile. The main purpose of these care strategies is thus to ensure that care-providers meet the local needs, but they also provide a rationale for evaluation and organizational development. To assist new PHCUs in establishing care strategies it was necessary to develop a m

[Spatial access to palliative care units in Germany: integrated analysis of availability and accessibility using the E2SFCA method].

INTRODUCTION: Demographic change and rising patient numbers pose challenges for local access to palliative care units. Availability and accessibility as dimensions of spatial access, which have mostly been considered separately in previous studies, are integrated using the method "Enhanced Two-Step Floating Catchment Area" (E2SFCA) in order to identify regional differences by providing a more realistic picture of the care situation. METHODS: At the community level, an access index (Zi) was calculated using the E2SFCA method. It was based on population data , bed capacity, and accessibility wi

Quantifying spatial accessibility to inpatient hospices in Germany.

BACKGROUND: Spatial access is an important indicator to assess quality of healthcare services and healthcare situation, with accessibility and availability as central components. Using inpatient hospices as an example of specialist palliative care in Germany, different indicators are used to measure spatial accessibility, which vary in complexity and considered variables. We compare four widely used methods, identify regional differences, and discuss possible differences in the results caused by methodological characteristics. METHODS: Locations of inpatient hospices were identified using a f

Geographical and climatic factors driving regional variation in medical centres for dementia in Japan: a nationwide geocomputational analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Japan's dementia policies have mandated establishing at least one medical centre for dementia (MCD) in each secondary healthcare area (SHA) and ensure equitable access to specialised dementia care services across regions. This study aimed to identify the geographical and climatic characteristics of MCDs and examine geographical accessibility to MCDs, and to clarify the geographical characteristics of SHAs in which MCDs have not been established, despite the policy that an MCD should be established in each SHA. DESIGN: A geocomputational analysis using publicly available geographic

Evaluating Spatial Accessibility to General Hospitals with Navigation and Social Media Location Data: A Case Study in Nanjing.

Spatial accessibility to general hospitals is an important indicator of the convenience and ability of residents to obtain medical services. Therefore, developing a model for measuring accessibility to general hospitals by multiple transportation modes is necessary. In this study, considering that the increase in travel time will reduce the attractiveness of general hospitals, we used the Two-Step Floating Catchment Area with the Gaussian attenuation function, in which the supply was presented by capacity of hospitals (i.e., number of beds), and the demand was presented by population in each g

Community health service utilisation and needs in an elderly population.

This study was carried out to determine community health service utilisation and needs of an elderly population living in a geographically defined area of Dublin. A random sample of 208 persons was taken from the 11,852 elderly persons living in the area. Activities of daily living and cognitive function were assessed in the person's own home. Whilst the community health services provided were less than comprehensive, they were targeted to those most in need; the very elderly, those living alone, and persons with a mental or physical disability. Objectively assessed need for further services f

Influences of Spatial Accessibility and Service Capacity on the Utilization of Elderly-Care Facilities: A Case Study of the Main Urban Area of Chongqing.

With the unprecedented growth of the elderly population in China, elderly-care facilities (ECFs) are in a fast expansion process. However, limited attention has been paid to the imbalance at the actual utilization level of ECFs. This research aims to reveal the spatial inequity of ECFs and to quantitatively examine the effect of accessibility and institutional service capacity on utilization. Taking Chongqing, China, as the study area, we measured the spatial accessibility of different travel modes by the Gaussian Two-Step Floating Catchment Area (G2SFCA) method and investigated distribution d
