Antioxidant effects of "beta catechin".

The free radical scavenging effect of "beta catechin", an antioxidant preparation containing green tea extract, ascorbic acid, sunflower seed extract, dunaliella carotene and natural vitamin E, was evaluated. Two techniques were used: electron spin resonance (ESR) spectrometry to measure radical-scavenging activity, and measurement of its effect on iron-induced lipid peroxidation in brain. A 0.05% solution of "beta catechin" completely scavenged 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radicals (6.1 x 10(15)spins/ml). A 10% solution of "beta catechin" completely scavenged superoxide (4.2 x 10(15)

Binding of Catechins to Staphylococcal Enterotoxin A.

Staphylococcal enterotoxin A (SEA) is a toxin protein, and is the most common cause of staphylococcal food poisoning. Polyphenols, such as catechins, are known to interact with proteins. In this study, we investigated the binding of catechins to SEA using SPR (Biacore), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), and protein-ligand docking. We found that (−)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) could strongly bind to SEA. According to thermodynamic parameters, a negative ΔG indicated that the interaction between EGCG and SEA was spontaneous, and the elec

Dynamic changes in catechin levels and catechin biosynthesis-related gene expression in albino tea plants (Camellia sinensis L.).

Tea (Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Kuntze) leaves are a major source of flavonoids that mainly belong to the flavan-3-ols or catechins and are implicated in a wide range of health benefits. Although the catechins in tea leaves were identified long ago, the regulatory mechanisms governing catechin biosynthesis remain unclear. In the present work, the dynamic changes of catechin levels and the expression profiles of catechin-related genes in albino tea plants were intensively examined. The amounts of most catechins decreased to their lowest levels in the albino phase, when epigallocatechingallate wa

Green Tea Catechin-Inactivated Viral Vaccine Platform.

Traditionally, chemical agents such as formalin (FA) and β-propiolactone (BPL) have long been used for the preparation of inactivated vaccines or toxoids. It has been shown that FA extensively modifies vaccine antigens and thus affects immunogenicity profiles, sometimes compromising the protective efficacy of the vaccines or even exacerbating the disease upon infection. In this study, we show that natural catechins from green tea extracts (GT) can be used as an inactivating agent to prepare inactivated viral vaccines. GT treatment resulted in complete and irreversible inactivation of influenza

(+)-Catechin attenuates activation of hepatic stellate cells.

(+)-Catechin is a type of catechin present in large amounts in açaí fruits and cocoa seeds. Besides its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, little is known about its effects in the liver, especially during hepatic fibrosis. We report here the effects of (+)-catechin on hepatic stellate cells. (+)-Catechin induced quiescent phenotype in GRX cells, along with an increase in lipid droplets. Proliferator-activated receptor γ mRNA expression was upregulated, whereas type I collagen mRNA expression was downregulated. Pro-inflammatory cytokines were not influenced by (+)-catechin, whereas t

Catechins enhance skeletal muscle performance.

Muscle-related disorders, such as sarcopenia and cachexia, caused by aging and chronic diseases can lead to the loss of muscle mass and strength to different degrees, severely affecting human health. Globally, tea is one of the three most popular beverages, and its major active ingredient catechins have been reported to delay muscular atrophy and enhance movement. However, currently, there is no systematic review to elaborate its roles and the associated mechanisms. This article reviews the (1) functions and mechanisms of catechins in the differentiation of myogenic stem cells, biogenesis of m

Catechins as Potential Mediators of Cardiovascular Health.

The impact of diet on cardiovascular disease has become an increasingly relevant topic as ongoing epidemiological evidence continues to demonstrate clear associations with disease burden and mortality. Certain diets, such as those high in sodium and saturated fat, are associated with cardiovascular disease states, while other diets can be cardioprotective. However, there is limited knowledge on how the micro- and macronutrients within such cardioprotective diets afford their benefits. One such micronutrient is the catechin class, which are naturally occurring compounds in plant foods, such as

Catechin versus MoS2 Nanoflakes Functionalized with Catechin: Improving the Sperm Fertilizing Ability-An In Vitro Study in a Swine Model.

Nowadays, the adoption of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) techniques is undergoing an impressive increase. In light of this, one of the most promising strategies is the novel use of non-physiological materials and naturally derived compounds for advanced sperm preparation methods. Here, sperm cells were exposed during capacitation to MoS2/Catechin nanoflakes and catechin (CT), a flavonoid with antioxidant properties, at concentrations of 10, 1, 0.1 ppm. The results showed no significant differences in terms of sperm membrane modifications or biochemical pathways among the groups, allowing the hyp

Osteoprotective Roles of Green Tea Catechins.

Osteoporosis is the second most common disease only secondary to cardiovascular disease, with the risk of fracture increasing with age. Osteoporosis is caused by an imbalance between osteoblastogenesis and osteoclastogenesis processes. Osteoclastogenesis may be enhanced, osteoblastogenesis may be reduced, or both may be evident. Inflammation and high reactive oxygen enhance osteoclastogenesis while reducing osteoblastogenesis by inducing osteoblast apoptosis and suppressing osteoblastic proliferation and differentiation. Catechins, the main polyphenols found in green tea with potent anti-oxida

Antiviral Activity of Catechin against Dengue Virus Infection.

Dengue virus (DENV) is the cause of dengue fever, infecting 390 million people worldwide per year. It is transmitted to humans through the bites of mosquitoes and could potentially develop severe symptoms. In spite of the rising social and economic impact inflicted by the disease on the global population, a conspicuous lack of efficacious therapeutics against DENV still persists. In this study, catechin, a natural polyphenol compound, was evaluated as a DENV infection inhibitor in vitro. Through time-course studies, catechin was shown to inhibit a post-entry stage of the DENV replication cycle

Catechins and Their Effect on the Gut Microbiome in Health and Cancer.

Catechins are a group of flavonoids found primarily in green tea, fruits, and berries; they play a significant role in the modulation of the gut microbiota, thereby having an impact on gut health and cancer prevention. Owing to their low bioavailability, catechins are transformed by the gut microbiota into various bioactive metabolites such as valerolactones and glucuronides, which support the growth of several beneficial bacterial species including Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus while inhibiting harmful strains like Clostridium difficile and Escherichia coli. These interactions enhance met
