THE ACTIVITY OF PERIPHERALLY STORED NEUROHUMORS IN CATFISHES.

1. Adrenalin when mixed with olive oil 1:100 and injected subcutaneously into a catfish will produce a marked pale spot and a general blanching of the whole fish. The general blanching will disappear in about a day. The pale spot may last 3 to 4 weeks. 2. Injections of adrenalin in oil 1:1000 to 1:10,000,000 cause the formation of only pale spots in catfishes. Adrenalin in oil 1:100,000,000 has no effect on the fish's color. 3. Acetylcholine, though ordinarily more powerful than adrenalin, when mixed with oil is effective only in high concentrations 1:20 to 1:100. It then produces clusters of

Molecular phylogeny of Neotropical monogeneans (Platyhelminthes: Monogenea) from catfishes (Siluriformes).

BACKGROUND: The phylogenetic relationships of dactylogyrids (Monogenea: Dactylogyridae) parasitising catfishes (Siluriformes) from the Neotropical region were investigated for the first time. METHODS: Partial sequences of the 28S rRNA gene of 40 specimens representing 25 dactylogyrid species were analysed together with sequences from GenBank using Bayesian inference, Maximum likelihood and Parsimony methods. Monophyly of dactylogyrids infecting catfishes and the Ancyrocephalinae was evaluated using the Approximately Unbiased test. RESULTS: The Ancyrocephalinae is a paraphyletic group of spec

Sonic/vocal motor pathways in catfishes: comparisons with other teleosts.

Among teleost fishes, representatives of several distantly related groups have sound-producing (sonic/vocal) muscles associated with the swimbladder or pectoral girdle/fin. Here, the diversity of vocal organs and central motor pathways in four families of catfish, order Siluriformes, is compared to that in families from two distantly related orders, the Scorpaeniformes and Batrachoidiformes. Several catfish families have two sonic mechanisms--a swimbladder vibration established by 'drumming muscles' that differ in origin and insertion between families, and a pectoral spine stridulatory apparat

Recurrent Body Shape Patterns in Cave- and Surface-Dwelling Trichomycterid Catfishes.

The evolution of body shape in animals reflects the interplay between functional constraints and habitat structure. While cave environments are well known to promote regressive traits in fish such as eye and pigment loss, their influence on overall body form remains poorly understood. Here, we examine patterns of body shape variation in cave-dwelling and surface-dwelling trichomycterid catfishes from northeastern Colombia to assess whether consistent associations exist between habitat type and morphology. Using geometric morphometric analyses, we quantified differences in body shape among spec

Morphology and development of teeth and epidermal brushes in loricariid catfishes.

Loricariidae or suckermouth armored catfishes are one of several aquatic taxa feeding on epilithic and epiphytic algae. Their upper and lower jaws bear exquisitely curved teeth, which usually are asymmetrically bicuspid. The enlarged lower lip carries papillae with keratinous unicellular epidermal brushes or unculi. Teeth, and probably unculi too, assist in scraping food off substrates. Their morphology, growth, and replacement is examined and compared among several loricariid species, using cleared and stained specimens, serial sections, and SEM. Apart from the general tooth form and crown sh

Size matters: diversity in swimbladders and Weberian ossicles affects hearing in catfishes.

Otophysine fish possess Weberian ossicles, which connect the swimbladder to the inner ear and improve hearing ability. There is a high diversity in the morphology of the swimbladder and Weberian apparatus in catfishes, which might affect hearing. We have examined these structures in representatives of six families with large, single bladders (Ariidae, Auchenipteridae, Heptapteridae, Malapteruridae, Mochokidae, Pseudopimelodidae) and five subfamilies from two families (Callichthyidae, Loricariidae) having small, paired, encapsulated bladders. We tested their hearing abilities utilizing the non-

Cathelicidins enhance protection of channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, and channel catfish ♀ × blue catfish, Ictalurus furcatus ♂ hybrid catfish against Edwarsiella ictaluri infection.

Cathelicidins are a class of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) known to possess rapid and direct antimicrobial activities against a variety of microorganisms. Recently identified cathelicidins derived from alligator and sea snake were found to be more effective in inhibiting microbial growth than other AMPs previously characterized. The ability of these two cathelicidins along with the peptides, cecropin and pleurocidin, to protect channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus, Rafinesque) and hybrid catfish (I. punctatus ♀ × blue catfish, Ictalurus furcatus, Valenciennes ♂) against Edwardsiella ictaluri,

Advancing aquaculture: Production of xenogenic catfish by transplanting blue catfish (Ictalurus furcatus) and channel catfish (I. punctatus) stem cells into white catfish (Ameiurus catus) triploid fry.

Xenogenesis has been recognized as a prospective method for producing channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus ♀ × blue catfish, I. furcatus ♂ hybrids. The xenogenesis procedure can be achieved by transplanting undifferentiated stem cells derived from a donor fish into a sterile recipient. Xenogenesis for hybrid catfish embryo production has been accomplished using triploid channel catfish as a surrogate. However, having a surrogate species with a shorter maturation period, like white catfish (Ameiurus catus), would result in reduced feed costs, labor costs, and smaller body size requirements, mak

Catfish stings to the hand.

Catfish skin toxin and the venom from their dorsal and pectoral spines may cause a menacing sting. Although these stings are often innocuous, severe tissue necrosis may occur. The hand is the most common site of catfish stings. Two cases of catfish stings of the hand are presented. In one of these cases gangrene of the long and small fingers developed requiring amputation. Symptoms are caused by hemolytic, dermonecrotic, edema-promoting, vasospastic, and lethal components of the venom and skin toxins. Local or regional anesthesia is administered to relieve pain and vasospasm. Empiric intraveno

Morphological and functional diversity of the mandible in suckermouth armored catfishes (Siluriformes: Loricariidae).

We examined the mandibles of 377 individuals representing 25 species, 12 genera, 5 tribes, and 2 subfamilies of the Loricariidae, a species-rich radiation of detritivorous-herbivorous neotropical freshwater fishes distinguished by having a ventral oral disk and jaws specialized for surface attachment and benthic feeding. Loricariid mandibles are transversely oriented and bilaterally independent, each rotating predominantly around its long axis, although rotational axes likely vary with mandibular geometry. On each mandible, we measured three traditional and three novel morphological parameters

Channel catfish ovarian fluid differentially enhances blue catfish sperm performance.

For externally fertilizing fishes, interactions between male and female gametes have been shown to have remarkable impacts on sperm performance. Ovarian fluid (OF) and its ability to alter the swimming behavior of fish sperm makes it a determining factor of fertility. With the expansion of channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) ♀ × blue catfish (Ictalurus furcatus) ♂ hybrid aquaculture, it is essential to understand the impacts during fertilization and the magnitude such gametic interactions have on sperm performance and subsequent male fertility potential. This study was conducted to address t

Susceptibility of channel catfish fry to Channel Catfish Virus (CCV) challenge increases with age.

Susceptibility of channel catfish to Channel Catfish Virus Disease (CCVD) has been generally considered to be inversely related to age. However, in experimental immersion challenges, we found that channel catfish fry, 3 to 8 d post hatch (dph), are most resistant to CCV and susceptibility increases with age. Initial studies involved 2 spawns that had high CCV carrier percentage. To determine if the resistance seen in the fry was related to the CCV carrier status of the parents, we selected 4 spawns from CCV negative parents and 2 spawns from CCV positive parents and immersion challenged them a

Leptospirosis in a Dutch catfish farm.

A 51-year-old farm worker presented with jaundice and fever. There had been a rat infestation around the farm ponds and in the shed. He was admitted to our hospital with acute renal and liver failure, thrombocytopenia and rhabdomyolysis. Because of the clinical clues, leptospirosis was suspected and diagnosed in blood by polymerase chain reaction and serology. Also his son, a co-worker on the farm, showed a positive serology. Clinicians should be aware of these occupational outbreaks and should recognise the clinical picture.

Severed intestine in channel catfish.

Six cases of severed intestines in farm-raised channel catfish were examined at fish disease diagnostic laboratories in Mississippi and Alabama. This condition has not been reported previously in fish. Affected fish had a 4-7-cm-long intestinal section (hyperemic where it was severed) attached to the stomach. The remainder of the intestine was completely missing in all six cases except for a 1-1.5-cm section of intestine prolapsed from the anus in fish from three of the cases. Ischemia, autodigestion following intussusception, or intestinal epithelium degradation are suggested as possible etio

Pyridoxine requirements of channel catfish.

In 20 and 12 week feeding trials, channel catfish fingerlings were fed purified diets containing five levels (0, 5, 10, 20, and 30 mg/kg) and six levels (0, 1, 2, 5, 10, and 20 mg/kg) of supplemental pyridoxine hydrochloride. Fish fed unsupplemented diets (pyridoxine content of 1.2 mg/kg) were characterized by anoxeria, nervous disorders, tetany, greenish-blue body coloration, and eventual mortality. Anemia, which has been reported in pyridoxine deficient salmonids, was not observed in pyridoxine deficient catfish. However, a microcytic, normochromic anemia was observed in groups fed high diet

Iron status of channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus affected by channel catfish anemia and response to parenteral iron.

Originally reported in 1983, channel catfish anemia (CCA), also 'white lip' or 'no blood,' is a major idiopathic disease affecting commercial production in the Mississippi Delta region of the USA. Affected individuals are characterized by lethargy, anorexia, extreme pallor, and packed cell volumes often below 5%, but a definitive cause for CCA remains elusive. Records from the National Warmwater Aquaculture Center (NWAC) reveal that, on average, CCA accounted for 4.7% of case submissions from 1994 to 2012. Taste bud development in the channel catfish.

Taste bud formation in channel catfish is first seen to occur in stage 39 embryos, when taste bud primordia (stage 1), consisting of three to five cells, including a single calretinin-positive cell, can be recognized within the oropharyngeal cavity and maxillary barbels. Within a short time (stage 40), stage 2 taste bud primordia are apparent and include two or three calretinin-positive cells. The number of calretinin-positive cells continues to increase (stage 3), and the primordia begin to erupt as mature taste buds (stage 4) by embryonic stage 48. This same pattern of taste bud development
