Cattell's 16 PF and PSY inventory: relationship between personality traits and behavioral responses in patients with acute myocardial infarction.

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships between personality and behavioral responses in patients with acute myocardial infarction. In a first step, a new instrument (PSY Inventory) for assessment of six behavioral characteristics (Sense of Responsibility, Energy and Competitiveness, Obsessive Behavior, Anger and Hostility, Stress-related Disturbances, Time Urgency) was developed by using factor analysis on intercorrelations of responses from 524 subjects of the general population. Internal consistency reliability for each of the PSY subscales was estimated by Cronbach alpha

Personality pattern of patients with chronic gastric ulcer: a case control study.

Personality factors are thought to play a role in peptic ulcer disease. In this study the psychological profiles of chronic gastric ulcer (GU) patients (n = 28) were compared to matched controls (n = 28) using the Cattell Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire Form C. GU patients were characterized by traits of anxiety, dependence, introspection, trustfulness and adaptability. These findings are discussed in the light of the literature on personality and peptic ulcer disease.

The personality pattern of patients with chronic peptic ulcer. A case-control study.

The personality assessment of 96 patients with gastric ulcer (GU) and 70 patients with duodenal ulcer (DU) was carried out using the Cattell Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire (16 PF). Two control groups were used; one group comprised community controls and the other patient controls--that is, patients with cholelithiasis. Three of the four personality characteristics that distinguished female GU and/or DU patients from controls--emotional instability, tension, and anxiety--and the two characteristics that distinguished male GU patients--low enthusiasm and low self-control--are component

Psychologic differences between high-, normal-, and low-renin hypertensives.

Sixty-one male subjects with mild untreated essential hypertension were classified by renin-sodium profiling as high renin (HR--13 Subjects), normal renin (NR--33 Subjects), or low renin (LR--15 Subjects). The HR subjects reported significantly more symptoms of sensitivity, depression, anxiety, hostility, paranoia, and psychotic thought than LR subjects on the Symptom Checklist (SCL-90). The NR subjects also reported more symptomatology than LR subjects. Similar differences between HR and LR subjects were found with the Cattell 16 Personality Factor Questionnaire (16PF).

Psychological factors associated with oral lichen planus.

50 patients with oral lichen planus (LP) were investigated for current anxiety and depression and for related personality factors. Anxiety levels, as measured on the Hospital Anxiety and Depression (HAD) Scale, were elevated in 50% of cases while depression scores, measured on the same scale, were low in all but a few. The sample profile showed a slight tendency towards anxiety, as measured by the Cattell 16 PF Questionnaire, but did not confirm previous reports of high intelligence and intellectual orientation. There were no statistically significant associations between erosive oral LP and e

Injury prediction in the young athlete: a preliminary report.

Joint flexibility and laxity as measured by 5 indices among 2,300 West Point cadets demonstrated no statistical relationship to joint injuries, or the need for surgical intervention resulting from injuries sustained in general athletic competition involving the ankle, knee, shoulder, or elbow. Similarly, no relationships were seen in a high school and collegiate football team. Parameters of flexibility vary significantly among different athletic population groups as related to age, sex, and type of athletic activity in which the individual is participating. In that part of the study conducted

Performance of agoraphobic families vs. non-agoraphobic families on the Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire (16PF).

This study investigated whether the personality variables, as measured by the Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire (16PF), differed significantly between families with an agoraphobic parent and families with nonagoraphobic parents. Participants were 15 agoraphobic female parents and 5 male agoraphobic parents, their spouses, and children. Two matched control groups of subjects (comparable to the female agoraphobic and male agoraphobic families) were used. Significant differences in personality variables were found between the families with agoraphobic parents and their matched controls. Si

[Individual human personality characteristics as a factor in the etiology of postvaccinal reactions].

Healthy volunteers with quite opposite emotional properties defined by means of Cattell Personality Questionnaires were shown to have essential differences in their postvaccinal reactions. These differences were seemingly caused by psychoemotional tension developing in unstable persons as a result of their perception of vaccination as a threatening factor. The administration of Phenasepam (3 mg) decreased such emotional tension and thus removed negative reactions at the postvaccinal period. The preparation had no influence on the production of protective antibodies to all types of antigens use

Personality traits and their relationship to traffic violations.

There is a relationship between personality traits of enlisted personnel at one mid-west Air Force Base and their frequency of moving violations. The 52 individuals who received one or two moving violations were more emotionally stable than the 33 non-offenders and the 18 chronic offenders. Discriminant analysis showed significant differences between the personality characteristics of the occasional offender and the other two groups, but none between the chronic offender and the non-offender. The personality characteristics of the chronic offender resembled those of Zelhart's alcoholic offende

[Psychophysiological correlations in paroxysmal forms of cardiac rhythm disorders].

Fifty-two patients with paroxysmal disorders of cardiac rhythm were under observation for periods of 6 months to 3 years. Paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia was registered in 16, ventricular tachycardia in one, paroxysmal cardiac fibrillation in 35. The method of comprehensive examination of personality (modified MMPI test, Cattell's and Hekhausen's tests) made it possible to reveal certain characteristic features of the personality and the actual psychic condition of all patients. Treatment with modern psychotropic agents (predominantly tranquilizers) improved the course of arrhythmia co

METHOD: Two self-descriptive measures--the 16PF of R.B. Cattell and the Symptom Checklist "O" were used in the study. The second measure chosen for the study was a 14-scale screen for the presence of functional disorder symptoms and 5 scales referring to phobias, general anxiety, somatization and conversions. Questionnaires were fulfilled twice--before and after psychotherapy. RESULTS: It wa
