[Hematoma of the head of the caudate nucleus].

We studied five patients with cerebral hemorrhage limited to the head of the caudate nucleus. This rare localization represents 11% of central nuclei hemorrhages. This entity has various clinical expressions; some are similar to a subarachnoid hemorrhage, others show the same manifestations associated with hemiparesis and neuropsychological findings, while still in others, the neuropsychological syndrome with speech, behaviour or memory disturbances predominates. Recovery depends on the patient's previous clinical status and on the presence of associated lesions at the time of hemorrhage. Typi

Neuronal correlates of obsessions in the caudate nucleus.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic overactivity of corticosubcortical loops including the caudate nucleus (CN) has been reported in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) using functional imaging techniques. However, direct proof of a modification of neuronal activity within the CN of OCD patients is still lacking. We tested the hypothesis that obsessions or compulsions might be associated with particular features of neuronal activity in the CN of OCD patients. METHODS: Single unit recordings were performed peroperatively in the CN of three patients with severe forms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) wh

Caudate nucleus area in drug-induced parkinsonism.

This study examined caudate nuclei areas in 10 schizophrenic subjects with and 25 schizophrenic subjects without parkinsonian symptoms. The subjects with parkinsonian symptoms were found to have statistically significantly smaller right caudate nuclei and a trend towards smaller left caudates. Cortical measurements did not differ between the groups. These results are consistent with the suggestion that antipsychotic drugs exert some neurotoxic effects, but should be viewed as preliminary and require replication.

Acute Caudate Nucleus Stroke Presenting As Hemiballismus.

Hemiballismus is defined as irregular, involuntary, large-amplitude flinging movements by the limbs, confined to one side of the body. Hemichorea refers to a state of excessive and irregularly timed, non-repetitive and randomly distributed, spontaneous, involuntary, and abrupt movements. It is widely believed that hemiballismus and chorea are suggestive of a lesion to the basal ganglia and subthalamic nucleus (STN). However, there are other etiologies that may influence the clinical presentation. Patients may present with certain common clinical features corresponding to the affected area of t

Human caudate nucleus subdivisions in tinnitus modulation.

OBJECTIVE: The object of this study was to define caudate nucleus locations responsive to intraoperative direct electrical stimulation for tinnitus loudness modulation and relate those locations to functional connectivity maps between caudate nucleus subdivisions and auditory cortex. METHODS: Six awake study participants who underwent bilateral deep brain stimulation (DBS) electrode placement in the caudate nucleus as part of a phase I clinical trial were analyzed for tinnitus modulation in response to acute stimulation at 20 locations. Resting-state 3-T functional MRI (fMRI) was used to comp

Ultrastructural alterations in caudate nucleus in aged cats.

These studies provide information on the changes in the ultrastructure in the caudate nucleus of aged cats. The major finding was that there was a decrease in the density of synapses in caudate neuropil. This decrease occurred in animals after 3 years of age and remained relatively constant in older animals. In conjunction with this change a population of unusually long synapses also occurred. These larger synaptic appositions were associated with enlarged spine heads. The caudate also showed a number of qualitative ultrastructural alterations. Many neurons contained accumulations of lipofusci

Bilateral Caudate Nucleus Infarctions Following Upper Gastrointestinal Bleeding.

A 75-year-old woman presented with consciousness disturbance accompanied by hematemesis. Brain imaging revealed ischemia in the bilateral caudate nuclei and right cerebral watershed area due to stenosis of the right anterior cerebral artery (ACA) and bilateral internal carotid arteries (ICA), and hypoperfusion in the right caudate nucleus. The patient's only symptom was abulia, which gradually resolved. Further brain scans showed that the ICA stenosis had improved, although the right ACA stenosis persisted. This was a rare case of bilateral caudate nucleus infarctions with a hemodynamic etiolo

[Reduplication of an event after right caudate nucleus haemorrhage].

BACKGROUND: Environmental reduplication which is characterized by reduplication of places has been reported in right hemispheric lesions, particularly but not only in the right frontal region. However, spatial delirium may follow right sub-cortical lesions. METHODS: We describe a 53 years-old man who had a reduplicative paramnesia for event alone after an intracerebral haematoma of the right caudate nucleus. RESULTS: MRI Scan showed also an extension of the right caudate nucleus haemorrhage into the ventricular system. Regional cerebral blood flow studied with 99Tcm-HMPAO showed a decrease o

[The neuronal responses of the caudate nucleus in the cat to sensory stimulation].

Responses of caudate neurons to a large variety of visual and other sensory stimuli were studied in alert cats. Sharp drops in the spontaneous activity of the unknown origin and differences in the activity level were revealed in adjacent parts of the caudate nucleus. The following types of neurons were recorded: neurons responding to visual stimulation; neurons responding to somatic stimulation; neurons responding to combined visual-somatic stimulation. The best response was observed to moving visual stimuli that attracted the animal's attention, alimentary objects specifically. The caudate nu

Motor effects of stimulation and ablation of the caudate nucleus of the monkey.

Electric stimulation of the caudate nucleus of the lightly anesthetized monkey was undertaken to demonstrate contralateral extremity movement. Contralateral forelimb flexion was observed in 75 percent of stimulations. The caudate nuclei were subsequently ablated, and 40 percent showed abnormal movements, mainly ipsilateral torticollis and ipsilateral eye deviation. The findings are consistent with previous studies using the caudate nucleus of the cat.

The Caudate Nucleus: Its Connections, Surgical Implications, and Related Complications.

BACKGROUND: The caudate nucleus is a C-shaped structure that is located in the center of the brain and is divided into 3 parts: the head, body, and tail. METHODS: We detail the anatomic connections, relationships with other basal ganglia structures, and clinical implications of injury to the caudate nucleus. RESULTS: Anatomically, the most inferior transcapsular gray matter is the lentiform peduncle, which is the connection between the lentiform nucleus and caudate nucleus as well as the amygdala. The border between the tail and body of the caudate nucleus is the posterior insular point. The

Molecular phenotypes associated with antipsychotic drugs in the human caudate nucleus.

Antipsychotic drugs are the current first-line of treatment for schizophrenia and other psychotic conditions. However, their molecular effects on the human brain are poorly studied, due to difficulty of tissue access and confounders associated with disease status. Here we examine differences in gene expression and DNA methylation associated with positive antipsychotic drug toxicology status in the human caudate nucleus. We find no genome-wide significant differences in DNA methylation, but abundant differences in gene expression. These gene expression differences are overall quite similar to g

TRPV4 mRNA is elevated in the caudate nucleus with NPH but not in Alzheimer's disease.

Symptoms of normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) are somewhat similar, and it is common to misdiagnose these two conditions. Although there are fluid markers detectable in humans with NPH and AD, determining which biomarker is optimal in representing genetic characteristics consistent throughout species is poorly understood. Here, we hypothesize that NPH can be differentiated from AD with mRNA biomarkers of unvaried proximity to telomeres. We examined human caudate nucleus tissue samples for the expression of transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily V m

Dopamine, but not serotonin, regulates reversal learning in the marmoset caudate nucleus.

Studies of visual discrimination reversal learning have revealed striking neurochemical dissociations at the level of the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) with serotoninergic, but not dopaminergic, integrity being important for successful reversal learning. These findings have considerable implications for disorders such as obsessive compulsive disorder and schizophrenia, in which reversal learning is impaired, and which are primarily treated with drugs targeting the dopaminergic and serotoninergic systems. Dysfunction in such disorders however, is not limited to the OFC and extends subcortically to

An autopsy case of caudate nucleus lobulation accompanied with diaphragmatic eventration.

We describe an autopsy female case of multiple anomalies with lobulation of caudate nucleus tail, diaphragmatic eventration, skeletal anomalies, pyramidal tract anomaly, and meningothelial meningioma. Her psychomotor development was delayed, and she developed bilateral eventration of the diaphragms on X-ray film in her third decades. Right hemi-colonectomy was performed for volvulus at the age of 44 years, and meningioma was incidentally identified. She died at the age of 47 years. Autopsy demonstrated the partial deficiency of the muscular tissue in the circular thinned membranous area predom

[The EEG characteristics in a lesion of different sections of the human caudate nucleus].

The study was aimed to reveal the characteristic features of EEG in 343 patients with caudate lesions depending on the localization of the pathological process (arteriovenous malformation, AVM). Methods of multivariate statistics were applied. It was shown that lesions in the body of the caudate nucleus (NC) were accompanied by the alpha-rhythm suppression up to its complete disappearance at the side of AVM and at the opposite side. Lesions in the head of NC were characterized by diffuse cortex irritation and local changes of the irritative character in the fronto-posterior and central regions
