Characterization of Two Highly Arsenic-Resistant Caulobacteraceae Strains of Brevundimonas nasdae: Discovery of a New Arsenic Resistance Determinant.

Arsenic (As), distributed widely in the natural environment, is a toxic substance which can severely impair the normal functions in living cells. Research on the genetic determinants conferring functions in arsenic resistance and metabolism is of great importance for remediating arsenic-contaminated environments. Many organisms, including bacteria, have developed various strategies to tolerate arsenic, by either detoxifying this harmful element or utilizing it for energy generation. More and more new arsenic resistance (ars) determinants have been identified to be conferring resistance to dive

Enhanced elimination of dimethachlon from soils using a novel strain Brevundimonas naejangsanensis J3.

Dimethachlon is a hazardous xenobiotic which poses a potential risk on the ecosystem and human health after foliar spray for mitigating fungal diseases of crops. A novel dimethachlon-degrading strain was isolated and identified as Brevundimonas naejangsanensis J3. Free cells and enzymes of this strain could rapidly eliminate 75 mg/L dimethachlon in liquid medium, especially the latter (>90% of degradation efficiency). Strain J3 completely metabolized dimethachlon by an ideally transformed pathway. Immobilization cells and enzymes exhibited better stability and adaptability for the repeated use

An EVOH nanofibrous sterile membrane with a robust and antifouling surface for high-performance sterile filtration via glutaraldehyde crosslinking and a plasma-assisted process.

Constructing a sterile membrane with a robust and antifouling surface is a powerful means to improve the sterile filtration efficiency of sterile membranes. In this work, a robust EVOH nanofibrous sterile membrane was facilely fabricated by the method of in situ crosslinking with glutaraldehyde and surface plasma treatment. The resultant EVOH nanofibrous sterile membrane possessed a carboxylated-crosslinked surface, with high hydrophilicity, which generated high chemical stability, high-temperature steam resistance, and an ultrahigh antifouling performance against bovine serum albumin, ribonuc

Brevundimonas diminuta coinfection as source of pyogenic liver abscess.

Brevundimonas diminuta, a non-fermenting gram-negative bacterium, is emerging as an important multidrug resistant opportunistic pathogen. It has been described in cases of bacteremia, pleuritis, keratitis and peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis. We describe, for the first time, a case of pyogenic liver abscess caused by coinfection of B. diminuta and Streptococcus anginosus, and briefly review pyogenic liver abscesses and the literature regarding B. diminuta.

Experimental comparison of point-of-use filters for drinking water ultrafiltration.

BACKGROUND: Waterborne pathogens such as Pseudomonas spp. and Legionella spp. may persist in hospital water networks despite chemical disinfection. Point-of-use filtration represents a physical control measure that can be applied in high-risk areas to contain the exposure to such pathogens. New technologies have enabled an extension of filters' lifetimes and have made available faucet hollow-fibre filters for water ultrafiltration. AIM: To compare point-of-use filters applied to cold water within their period of validity. METHODS: Faucet hollow-fibre filters (filter A), shower hollow-fibre f

Biosynthesis of poly-beta-hydroxyalkanoate by Brevundimonas vesicularis LMG P-23615 and Sphingopyxis macrogoltabida LMG 17324 using acid-hydrolyzed sawdust as carbon source.

Poly-beta-hydroxyalkanoate (PHA) is a biodegradable polymer accumulated in intracellular granules by different bacterial species. Its physical and chemical properties are similar to those of petroleum-derived plastics. Material generated by the acid hydrolysis of wood was evaluated for use in the bacterial synthesis of PHA. Acid-hydrolyzed sawdust was prepared and adjusted to pH 7. Mineral salts with carbon:nitrogen (C:N) proportions of 100:1, 100:3.5, 100:10, 100:30, or 100:50 and trace elements were added and these solutions were inoculated with a bacterial strain Brevundimonas vesicularis L

Role of Brevundimonas vesicularis in supporting the growth of Legionella in nutrient-poor environments.

In 1986, we encountered the first case of Legionella micdadei pneumonia in Japan. In the follow-up study to determine the infection route of L. micdadei, we isolated Brevundimonas vesicularis from the shower hose of the patients home. This motivated us to explore the symbiosis between B. vesicularis and Legionella in this study. B. vesicularis type strain, B. vesicularis Kobe strain, Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 type strain, and L. micdadei Kobe strain were used. B. vesicularis was inoculated into 0.01 M phosphate buffer solution containing artificial sand, and varying concentrations of

Assessment of a novel microalgae-cork based technology for removing antibiotics, pesticides and nitrates from groundwater.

Groundwater pollution has increased in recent years due to the intensification of agricultural and livestock activities. This results in a significant reduction in available freshwater resources. Here, we have studied the long term assessment of a green technology (1-4 L/day) based on a photobioreactor (PBR) containing immobilised microalgae-bacteria in polyurethane foam (PF) followed by a cork filter (CF) for removing nitrates, pesticides (atrazine and bromacil), and antibiotics (sulfamethoxazole and sulfacetamide) from groundwater. The prototype was moderately effective for removing nitrates

Co-treatment of landfill leachate with urban wastewater by chemical, physical and biological processes: Fenton oxidation preserves autochthonous bacterial community in the activated sludge process.

The impact of Fenton oxidation (FO) and Air stripping (AS) pre-treatments on the bacterial community of a biological activated sludge (B-AS) process for the co-treatment of mature landfill leachate (MLL) and urban wastewater (UWW) was assessed. In this work high-throughput sequencing was used to identify changes in the composition of the bacterial communities when exposed to different landfill leachate's pre-treatments. The combination of FO and AS to increase biodegradability (BOD5/COD) and reduce ammonia concentration (NH3) respectively, allowed to successfully operate the B-AS and effective

Is redox zonation an appropriate method for determining the stage of natural remediation in deep contaminated groundwater?

Groundwater contamination resulting from petroleum development poses a significant threat to drinking water sources, especially in developing countries. In situ natural remediation methods, including microbiological processes, have gained popularity for the reduction of groundwater contaminants. However, assessing the stage of remediation in deep contaminated groundwater is challenging and costly due to the complexity of diverse geological conditions and unknown initial concentrations of contaminants. This research proposes that redox zonation may be a more convenient and comprehensive indicat

PEGylated organophosphorus hydrolase combined with butyrylcholinesterase: dual-enzyme synergistic biocatalysis for acute organophosphate poisoning.

Organophosphates (OPs), widely used as insecticides, exhibit severe acute toxicity and pose a significant threat to public health. Current standard therapy, which mainly relies on atropine and oxime reactivators, alleviates symptoms but fails to effectively eliminate circulating toxin or excess acetylcholine (ACh), thus representing a non-causal intervention. This study proposes a novel, efficient synergistic dual-enzyme strategy for the treatment of acute OP poisoning in a Sprague-Dawley rat model. Intravenous co-administration of organophosphorus hydrolase (OPH) from Pseudomonas diminuta, si

Dietary riboflavin deficiency induces genomic instability of esophageal squamous cells that is associated with gut microbiota dysbiosis in rats.

SCOPE: Epidemiologic evidence suggests that riboflavin (RBF) deficiency is a specific nutritional predisposition for esophageal cancer. The aim of this study is to investigate the potential roles of gut microbiota in esophageal tumorigenesis caused by the RBF deficiency. METHODS: Male F344 rats were subcutaneously injected with the chemical carcinogen N-nitrosomethylbenzylamine (NMBA, 0.35 mg kg-1). Rats were assigned to 4 groups, denoted as R6 (normal RBF, 6 mg kg-1), R6N (normal RBF combined with NMBA), R6N → R0N (normal RBF conversion to RBF-deficiency), and R0N → R6N (RBF-deficiency conve
