Appendiceal or cecal endometriosis uncommonly presents diagnostic challenges, but rare cases with intestinal metaplasia can mimic mucinous tumors of the appendix. We describe 6 cases of appendiceal or cecal endometriosis with intestinal metaplasia that grossly and microscopically mimicked appendiceal mucinous tumors. The cases were characterized by marked mural hypertrophy and elastosis, with distortion of the appendix, and virtual obliteration of the lumen of the appendix. All cases had conventional endometriosis, together with varying amounts of endometriosis with intestinal-type epithelium.

Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN) can lead to intraperitoneal dissemination and subsequent pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP). Therefore, achieving complete resection, typically by appendectomy, is considered important for curative treatment. BACKGROUND: The tumors of the cecal appendix are a rare and heterogeneous group of neoplasms with variable prognosis and evolution, its incidence is very low. Mucinous tumors are defined as a dilated cecal appendix due to an abnormal accumulation of mucin, which may be benign or malign. Within these we find the mucoceles, which according to the latest consensus and classifications no longer include them. In this article we describe our experience in these tumors, we also propose a group to include the mucoceles and we review the literature.

The authors report a case of cecal malignant carcinoid, diagnosticated in a 68 years old male patient. Carcinoid tumours are rare neoplasm and their behaviour seems to change with the localization. Cecal carcinoid represents only 2-3% of gastrointestinal carcinoid. Some times it is discovered incidentally at autopsy, surgery or endoscopy. The aim of this paper has been to review, in literature, the frequency, treatment and prognosis of this neoplasm.

Diagnosis of cecal diverticulitis remains a dilemma. Preoperatively it can mimic appendicitis, and intraoperatively the surgeon is confronted with an inflammatory mass that may masquerade as a neoplasm. We reviewed 18 cases of pathologically documented cecal diverticulitis and one case of solitary diverticulitis of the ascending colon. Ileocolonic resection was done in 16 patients, and three patients had local resection. Patients having local resection had greater morbidity and a significantly longer hospital stay. The present paper describes a case of ileocecal intussusception detected by ultrasound and confirmed by CT, including the imaging characteristics allowing its diagnosis. The patient was referred for colonoscopy, which could not be completed, to assess the cause of intussusception.
