INTRODUCTION: Cecropia angustifolia Trécul. is a native Andean plant containing high levels of pentacyclic triterpenes (PTs), including several isobaric molecules that serve as chemical markers. Preclinical studies suggest that PTs positively modulate metabolic and vascular diseases. However, their low oral absorption reduces their bioactive effects.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was (1) to improve the absorption of PTs from C. angustifolia and (2) to establish a platform to produce biomass or botanical reference material using a strategy for their accumulation.
METHODS: MALDI-TOF a

Black fungi of the order Chaetothyriales are grown by many tropical plant-mutualistic ants as small so-called "patches" in their nests, which are located inside hollow structures provided by the host plant ("domatia"). These fungi are introduced and fostered by the ants, indicating that they are important for the colony. As several species of Chaetothyriales tolerate, adsorb, and metabolize toxic volatiles, we investigated the composition of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of selected domatia in the Azteca/Cecropia ant-plant mutualism. Concentrations of VOCs in ant-inhabited domatia, empty d

This study reports new information on interactions between two sympatric ant species, the plant-ant Azteca alfari (Dolichoderinae) living in association with the myrmecophyte Cecropia obtusa (Cecropiaceae) and Camponotus blandus (Formicinae), a ground-nesting, arboreal-foraging species. Workers of A. alfari forage only on the foliage and the upper parts of the trunk of their host Cecropia, while C. blandus nests in the ground but frequently forages and patrols pioneer tree foliage, including Cecropia. The activity pattern of A. alfari and the number of C. blandus on Cecropia obtusa was monitor

Cecropia glazioui Sneth (Cecropiaceae) is used in folk medicine in tropical and subtropical Latin America as cardiotonic, diuretic, hypotensive, anti-inflammatory and anti-asthmatic. The hypotensive/antihypertensive activity of the plant aqueous extract (AE) and isolated butanolic fraction (BuF) has been confirmed and putatively related to calcium channels blockade in vascular smooth musculature [Lapa, A.J., Lima-Landman, M.T.R., Cysneiros, R.M, Borges, A.C.R., Souccar, C., Barreta, I.P., Lima, T.C.M., 1999. As plants may contain low levels of some minerals including sodium, copper, and phosphorous, herbivores may become deficient in these nutrients. In 2001, Hurricane Iris hit the Monkey River Forest in Belize causing substantial damage to the food supply of the black howler monkey population (Alouatta pigra) living there. This included an 18-month absence in fruit production and a complete loss of figs that are high in calcium. In this article, we describe the post-hurricane diet of this monkey population and compare the mineral content of food items to each other and to recommendations for non-

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the frequency of IgE sensitization and allergenic capacity of pollen grains of Artocarpus communis, Cecropia peltata and Fraxinus uhdei in allergic rhinitis patients.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study with comparative groups: a rhinitis group and a control group. The three pollen extracts were prepared, and IgE sensitization was assessed using the skin prick test and serum-specific IgE. Allergenicity and clinical relevance were subsequently evaluated using the basophil activation test (BAT) and the nasal challenge test (NCT).
RESULTS: A total of 60 people were included

Ant-plant mutualisms are typically framed as two-species exchanges in which plants provide food and shelter in return for herbivore defense. Yet ants are themselves valuable prey, potentially attracting vertebrate predators that impose hidden structural costs on host plants. Here, I argue that such interactions incur partner-associated indirect costs: plants may suffer damage not from their partners directly, but because those partners attract vertebrate predators. Using the Azteca-Cecropia mutualism as a focal example, I synthesize evidence that anteaters and woodpeckers excavate ant-occupied

The dichloromethane extract and pomolic acid ( 5) obtained from leaves of Cecropia pachystachya both reduced carrageenan-induced paw oedema in mice. Interestingly, while the triterpenoid inhibited the in vivo production of interleukin-1beta by 39 %, it had no effect on tumour necrosis factor-alpha production. We also demonstrated that both the dichloromethane extract and 5 inhibited the viability of human polymorphonuclear (PMN) cells in a time- and dose-dependent fashion. The PMN membrane integrity was determined with the aid of flow cytometry by means of the exclusion of propidium iodide as

The hypotensive and antihypertensive activities of the aqueous extract (AE) and butanolic fraction (ButF) isolated from Cecropia glaziovii Sneth have been demonstrated in previous studies in animal models. This study aimed to evaluate the molecular mechanism of action responsible for the vasodilatory effect of procyanidins, flavanols, and flavonoids found in C. glaziovii in endothelial cell culture. For this purpose, we analyzed the effect of procyanidin B2 and B3 compounds, catechin, epicatechin, orientin, isoorientin, and isovitexin in the mobilization of Ca2+ in rat endothelial cell culture

In Central and South American traditional medicine, people use Cecropia obtusifolia Bertol (Cecropiaceae) for the treatment of diabetes mellitus. However, its hypoglycemic action mechanism at pancreatic and liver level has been poorly explored. The present research aimed to establish the influence of the aqueous extract of C. obtusifolia, standardized in its content of chlorogenic acid, on insulin secretion in RINm5F cells and over the liver carbohydrates and lipids metabolism, and to determine concomitantly its hepatoprotective effect on mice with streptozotocin-induced diabetes. In RINm5F ce

Xenarthran mammals of the suborder Folivora are arboreal species that feed mainly on leaves and Cecropia spp, an abundant plant in the Brazilian Amazon region, is favoured. The stomach of sloths represents 20-30% of their body weight and is adapted to gastric fermentation of plant material. These anatomical and physiological adaptations can be altered by many factors when confined to captivity, which favours fatal gastric conditions. The objective of this study was to describe the gastric anatomopathological lesions in three two-toed sloths (Choloepus didactylus) from a wildlife rescue centre.

Cecropia glaziovii Sneth is a common tree at the Southeastern Brazilian coast. As many other species of the genus, it shares the reputed folk use to treat heart failure, cough, asthma and bronchitis. The plant has been cultivated under controlled conditions and the 2% aqueous extract (AE) prepared with the dried leaves was standardized by its chemical contents on catechins, flavonoids and procyanidins. The present paper reports the antihypertensive activity of AE and of n-butanol fraction (BuF), an enriched semi-purified butanolic fraction used to isolate the main chemical constituents. Oral a

Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a potentially fatal stem-cell cancer. P-glycoprotein (P-gp/ABCB1) activity has been described as a relevant factor in the chemotherapeutic failure and correlated to a poor prognosis in these malignancies. In the present study, we investigated the mechanism of the antineoplastic activity of 3β-acetyl tormentic acid (3ATA), a triterpene isolated from C. lyratiloba, on Lucena-1, an MDR leukemia cell line, that overexpressed P-gp/ABCB1. Results showing that this triterpene induced DNA-fragmentation, activation of caspase-3 and cytochrome c release indicated that i
