Recently, a new antibiotic of cephamycins, cefmetazole (CMZ) has been developed. In our clinic, CMZ was used to examine its clinical effect and adverse reactions, and the results were herein reported. A number of different organisms can be isolated from intraabdominal infection. The most common are aerobic Gram-negative bacilli. Anaerobes are not unusual. We compared the in-vitro antibacterial activity of cefmetazole and other 4 antibiotics against clinical isolates. An open non-comparative clinical trial of cefmetazole in the treatment of 40 patients with infections of the lower and upper urinary tracts was performed. The clinical results were excellent and good in 100 per cent of the cases. In 75 per cent of the cases the efficacy was bacteriological (complete eradication of the pathogen). No patients showed any adverse reactions to the treatment with cefmetazole. The general estimate of the results was indicative of the cefmetazole high efficacy in the treatment of the infections of the upper and lower urinary tracts.

Cefmetazole (CMZ) was intravenously injected to 12 patients with acute prostatitis as well as 3 patients with acute epididymitis. Good clinical results were obtained in 10 patients (91.7%) with acute prostatitis and 2 patients (100%) with acute epididymitis. No side effects were reported in all of 23 patients. Prophylactic antibiotics are given routinely to patients undergoing surgical treatment of the biliary tract to prevent postoperative infection if risk factors for postoperative sepsis are present. Cefmetazole (CM) is a new broad spectrum parenteral cephamycin antibiotic. This drug possesses a spectrum of activity against a wide range of gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria that is similar to cefoxitin (CX), an antibiotic widely used for prophylaxis with operations upon the abdomen.
