[Size of the cell nucleus and nucleus-cytoplasm relations in pinealocytes in humans of middle and advanced age].

In the presented light microscope study, the question was examined of whether the size of the nucleus and nucleolus, respectively the nuclear:cytoplasmic ratio of pinealocytes, are changed in different human age groups. We investigated the pineals of 30 to 40-year-old men in comparison with those from patients who were older than 70 years. The investigation was performed with smears of the pineal gland which were stained according to Pappenheim (May-Grünwald and Giemsa method). The results show that the nuclear size of the pinealocytes of the younger men (30 to 40-year-olds) is 92 micron 2 and

The development of cell size in the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus of monocularly paralyzed cats.

Nissl profiles of cell somata in the lateral geniculate nuclei (LGN) of adult cats which had been reared from 3 to 4 weeks of age with monocular paralysis (MP) were compared to those from normally reared adult cats. In all subjects, measurements were made in 3 different regions of the binocular segments of the A and A1 laminae and in the monocular segment in both LGNs. In the cats reared with MP, reductions in average cell size of about 20%, relative to normal, were detected throughout the binocular segments of the A and A1 laminae in both LGNs whether their innervation was provided by the par

Quantitative studies of cell size in the cat's dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus following visual deprivation.

The effects of visual deprivation upon dorsal lateral geniculate (DLG) cell size were compared for seven kittens reared with monocular lid-suture (MD), seven with binocular lid-suture (BD), and six with one eye lid-sutured and the other eye enucleated soon after birth (MD-E). Six additional kittens were reared normally for comparison. For each kitten the cross-sectional areas of 300 cells were measured in one or both nuclei. Measurements were taken from the binocular segment of laminae A and A1 and the monocular segment of lamina A. In agreement with previous studies, cells in the binocular se

Volume regulation and shape bifurcation in the cell nucleus.

Alterations in nuclear morphology are closely associated with essential cell functions, such as cell motility and polarization, and correlate with a wide range of human diseases, including cancer, muscular dystrophy, dilated cardiomyopathy and progeria. However, the mechanics and forces that shape the nucleus are not well understood. Here, we demonstrate that when an adherent cell is detached from its substratum, the nucleus undergoes a large volumetric reduction accompanied by a morphological transition from an almost smooth to a heavily folded surface. We develop a mathematical model that sy

Assessment of Consistency in Assignment of Severe (Grade 3) Squamous Metaplasia to Human Bulbar Conjunctiva Impression Cytology Cell Samples.

Nucleus-to-cytoplasm (N:C) characteristics of published images of human bulbar conjunctival cells designated as showing severe (grade 3) squamous metaplasia were retrospectively assessed. From publications over a 40-year period, measurements were made from images of cell and nucleus size (based on areas and dimensions) and four different calculations were made for nucleo-cytoplasmic (N:C) ratios. From 54 published images, the mean nucleus-to-cytoplasm area ratio (NU/CYT AREA ratio) was 0.145 +/- 0.077 (range 0.052 to 0.346), compared to two different reference set values of 0.069 +/- 0.017 and

Phylogenetic changes in the connections of the lateral preglomerular nucleus in ostariophysan teleosts: a pluralistic view of brain evolution.

The connections of the lateral preglomerular nucleus were examined with the fluorescent tracer DiI in a cyprinid, a characin, a catfish and a gymnotoid species. In all of these taxa the lateral preglomerular nucleus receives inputs from the torus semicircularis and projects to the telencephalon. Cytoarchitectural and topological data further support the hypothesis that the lateral preglomerular nucleus is homologous among the species examined. A cladistic analysis of species differences, however, reveals that some connections of the lateral preglomerular nucleus have changed dramatically durin

Differential effects of monocular deprivation seen in different layers of the lateral geniculate nucleus.

Recent investigations have suggested that the morphological effects of monocular deprivation can be explained by a developmental competitive interaction between the pathways from the two eyes. This study presents evidence in the tree shrew for binocular competition and for an unequal effect of such competition on the different layers of the lateral geniculate nucleus. The effects of monocular deprivation were evaluated by comparing cell size changes in the binocular and monocular segments of the lateral geniculate nucleus in three tree shrews raised with one eye sutured. In two of these animal

The cell body space occupied by the nucleus during the cell differentiation in human lymphocytic, granulocytic and erythroid cell lineages.

The present nuclear and cell body diameter measurements demonstrated size differences of the approximate cell space estimate occupied by the cell nucleus during the cell differentiation in lymphocytic, granulocytic and erythroid cell lineages. These lineages were used as convenient models because all differentiation steps were easily identified and accessible in diagnostic peripheral blood or bone marrow smears of blood donors (BDs), patients suffering from chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) and refractory anemia (RA) of the myelodysplastic syndrom

The Reduction of the Cell Nuclear Size in the Cell Body Space During the Differentiation Might Be Cell Lineage Specific (A Retrospective Morphological Note).

The cell body space occupied by the nucleus decreased during the cell differentiation of the granulocytic cell lineage in CML (Chronic Myeloid Leukemia) patients. In contrary, in patients suffering from CLL (Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia), the cell body space occupied by the nucleus during the cell differentiation of the lymphocytic lineage did not decrease despite the reduction of the cell size. Thus, the cell body space occupied by the cell nucleus during the differentiation was characteristic for each of these cell lineages.

Effect of adult-onset deafness on the human central auditory system.

Degenerative change in the central auditory system was assessed in seven subjects with profound bilateral adult-onset deafness. The degree of transneuronal atrophy was determined by measuring cell size at three levels of the brain stem auditory pathway (anteroventral cochlear nucleus, medial superior olivary nucleus, and inferior colliculus). Within subjects, the relative degree of cell shrinkage was similar across all levels of the central pathway. Across subjects, the best neuronal preservation was seen in a case of viral labyrinthitis with 1 year of bilateral dearness and a near-normal popu

A Grid-Based Nucleus Counting Method for Estimates of the Density of Superficial Conjunctival Cells from Impression Cytology Samples Taken from Normal Healthy Human Eyes.

PURPOSE: To develop and validate an easily procured objective estimate of the cell density of the superficial epithelial cells of the normal bulbar conjunctiva using conjunctival impression cytology (CIC). METHODS: From 20 healthy non-contact lens-wearing young adults, CIC was undertaken off the nasal aspect of the exposed bulbar conjunctiva, the filters stained with Giemsa, and images taken at 200× that only included an all-but-contiguous monolayer of epithelial cells. These images were projected at 1000× magnification and an overlay drawn of the location of the stained nuclei, from which tw

Quantitative analysis of the lateral geniculate nucleus in the mutant microphthalmic rat.

A quantitative analysis of the lateral geniculate nucleus was carried out in the mutant microphthalmic rat. In the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (LGNd) of the microphthalmic rat we found the total volume and neuronal population were reduced by 45 and 68% of normal values, respectively. The size of normal LGNd neurons was 8 to 20 microns and that of mutant LGNd cells from 6 to 16 microns. Neurons of the normal LGNd were medium-size and round or oval, and their cell bodies were filled with Nissl substance. Microphthalmic LGNd neurons, on the other hand, had narrow cytoplasmic spaces with few

Nucleus deformation of SaOs-2 cells on rhombic µ-pillars.

It has been previously shown that osteosarcoma (SaOs-2) cells respond to micropillared surfaces consisting of poly-L-lactic acid with strong deformation of the cell body and nucleus. Until now, cell nucleus deformation of SaOs-2 cells was only studied by exposing them to square shaped micropillars in an isotropic pattern. Here we report on experiments of the cell nucleus response of such cells to rhombic structures of different topographies generated from a rubbery polymer, namely poly(n-butyacrylate). It is observed that cells orientate themselves perpendicular to the long axis of the rhombi.

Cell and nuclear scaling constrains tissue fluidity in a doubly-dense remodeling epithelium.

During epithelial remodeling, tissues exhibit solid- or fluid-like properties depending on developmental constraints. In soft matter systems like foams and colloidal glasses, component size influences material mechanics. Here, we investigated how cell and nuclear size affect tissue mechanics. mh mutant embryos have epithelia with doubled cell densities, creating cells with altered 3D aspect ratios. Nuclear volumes scale non-linearly with cell volumes, adopting rounder shapes and reduced apical-basal heights, suggesting that stiff nuclei deform less than cell cortices. These compacted nuclei re

Morphometric analysis of the vestibular complex in the rat.

The characteristics of the four major vestibular nuclei and accessory cell groups in the rat have been studied in serially cut horizontal sections. Camera lucida drawings of the vestibular nuclei and their neurons were made in these sections and subjected to a computerized image analysis. The dimensions (volume and length) and the number of cells of each vestibular nucleus were obtained, as well as morphometric parameters of their neurons (cross-sectional area, maximum and minimum diameter, and shape). These parameters were statistically analyzed by comparing the cell population from different
