Antibacterial activity of oxidized regenerated cellulose.

It has been demonstrated that oxidized regenerated cellulose promptly and markedly reduces the bacterial census of ten different strains of common pathogens when exposed to them in vitro. This was not true of two other hemostatic agents tested, namely, absorbable gelatin sponge and topical thrombin. Wounds in guinea pigs in which oxidized regenerated cellulose was placed and infected with one of three pathogens had healing per primum in 39 of 40 instances. In similar control wounds and incisions in which absorbable gelatin sponge was placed, sepsis of the wound developed in 19 of 20 of the con

Examination of oxidized cellulose as a macromolecular prodrug carrier: preparation and characterization of an oxidized cellulose-phenylpropanolamine conjugate.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of 6-carboxycellulose (OC), a biocompatible and bioresorbable polymer, as a prodrug carrier for amine drugs. Phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride (PPA.HCl) was used as a model drug. OC and PPA were reacted in dimethylformamide (DMF) in the presence of 1,3-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC) for 2.5 days at room temperature. Filtration, followed by washing with methanol, and subsequent drying under vacuum, produced the conjugate in 65-78% yield. The amount of PPA in the product, determined from the difference in the carboxylic content before and afte

Granuloma caused by oxidized cellulose following craniotomy.

Three cases are reported in which large granulomas developed 13 to 21 months respectively after removal of intracranial meningiomas (2 cases) and after operation for an anterior communicating artery aneurysm. In each of the cases oxidized cellulose had been used and left in place for haemostasis. All of the granulomas acted as space-occupying lesions. They could be removed operatively with good result. All of them consisted of mononuclear phagocytic and multi-nuclear giant cells and contained remnants of oxidized cellulose. No comparable cases have been reported in the literature. Diagnosis, t

Considerations About the Antimicrobial Activity of Oxidized Cellulose and Oxidized Regenerated Cellulose and Their Potential Application in Veterinary Surgery.

Oxidized cellulose (OC) and oxidized regenerated cellulose (ORC) are bioabsorbable polysaccharide-based materials widely used in surgery for topical hemostasis. Beyond their established hemostatic role, increasing attention has been directed toward their potential antimicrobial activity, primarily attributed to local acidification following carboxyl group dissociation. Discussing the possible implications of the antibacterial properties of OC/ORC in veterinary surgical practice, this review critically examines the existing evidence. In vitro studies show that viable bacterial counts are signif

Examination of aqueous oxidized cellulose dispersions as a potential drug carrier. I. Preparation and characterization of oxidized cellulose-phenylpropanolamine complexes.

Partially neutralized aqueous dispersions of oxidized cellulose (OC) (COOH content 24.2%; degree of neutralization [DN] 0.22-0.44; solid content 14.4% wt/wt), a biocompatible biodegradable polymer, were prepared and their use to entrap an amine drug was demonstrated. Phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride (PPA.HCl) was used as a model drug. OCA-PPA complexes were prepared by adding the drug solution to the OC dispersion. Light microscopy, powder x-ray diffractometry (PXRD), and Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy were used to characterize hydrated and dried OC and the OC-PPA complexes.

Post-thoracotomy paraplegia after oxidized cellulose spinal compression.

Post-thoracotomy paraplegia after non-aortic surgery is an extremely uncommon complication. A 56-year-old woman presented with a 1-year history of progressive shortness of breath. Computed tomography revealed a locally advanced posterior mediastinal mass involving the ribs and the left neural foramina. Tumor excision with a left pneumonectomy was performed. Post-resection, bleeding was noted in the vicinity of the T4-T5 vertebral body, and the bleeding point was packed with oxidized cellulose gauze (Surgicel®). Postoperatively, the patient complained of bilateral leg numbness extending up to t

Oxidized Regenerated Cellulose (Surgicel®) on Cytology/Histology.

INTRODUCTION: In patients with a history of malignancy, follow-up surveillance of lymph nodes (LNs) is required to evaluate for potential malignancy or infection. In some cases, the lymphadenopathy may be secondary to an intraprocedural hemostatic agent and/or related granulomatous reaction. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of an 80-year-old female with a remote past medical history of breast cancer status post-lumpectomy and chemoradiation. Twenty years later, a 2.4 cm pulmonary right middle lobe nodule was noted on imaging studies. She underwent bronchoscopy, cervical mediastinoscopy,

Oxidized Cellulose (Surgicel) Causing Postoperative Cauda Equine Syndrome.

Hemostatic agents are often used in spine surgery to control excessive bleeding. Oxidized cellulose (OC) is a common hemostatic agent used for this purpose. We present a case of postoperative cauda equina syndrome caused by Surgicel (Johnson & Johnson, New Jersey, US). An emergent decompression led to complete recovery. All attempts should be made to remove OC before closure after hemostasis has been achieved.

Oxidized cellulose--survey of the most recent achievements.

The functionalization and particularly the oxidation of cellulose is an intriguing and challenging topic due to the presence of multiple reactive sites, which can undergo specific reactions. The variety of the oxidizing agents used to improve the selectivity and yields of these transformations is illustrated by the steadily growing of the number of publications and patents reported. This paper is focused on the most selective agents for cellulose oxidations, i.e., sodium periodate and stable or non persistent nitroxyl radicals, emphasizing on the most recent developments reported so far.

TEMPO oxidized cellulose nanofibers from electrospun regenerated cellulose: Processing feasibility and application potentials.

2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) oxidized cellulose nanofiber (TOCN) as an ecofriendly 1D nano-unit has been endowed with infinite possibilities to prepare a variety of functional materials. However, its wide applications have been significantly restricted due to complicated preparation processes from natural wood precursor with low production yield and severe contamination. Herein, we propose to mass produce regenerated TOCN (rTOCN) using electrospun cellulose acetate nanofiber (CANF) as precursor. It was illustrated that regenerated cellulose nanofibers (rCNF) obtained from deace

Alcohol induced gelation of TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibril dispersions.

Solvent-induced physical hydrogels of TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibrils (OCNFs) were obtained from aqueous/alcoholic dispersions of fibrils in lower alcohols, namely, methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol and 2-propanol. The sol-gel transition occurs above a critical alcohol concentration of ca. 30 wt% for all alcohols tested. The rheological properties of the hydrogels depend on the nature of the alcohol: for ethanol, 1-propanol and 2-propanol the magnitude of the shear storage modulus follows the alcohol hydrophilicity, whilst methanol produces the weakest gels in the group. Above a second critic
