Developmental venous anomalies (DVAs) are relatively common lesions, present in up to 3% of the population. The defining characteristic of these lesions is the confluence of radially oriented veins into a single dilated venous channel. DVAs are also known as cerebral venous angiomas, cerebral venous malformations, and cerebral venous medullary malformations. They are the most common type of cerebral vascular malformation found on autopsy studies, and they are often encountered as incidental findings on neuroimaging studies. DVAs are congenital lesions thought to arise from aberrations that occ

Although the majority of hemangiomas of infancy can be expected to follow a benign course, a significant subset may result in serious complications. Recently, hemangiomas of segmental morphology, or those which are large, plaque-like, and patterned in distribution, have been recognized as important markers for potential complications. PHACE syndrome represents the best known example of the variety of problems that can occur in this setting. The PHACE acronym, which stands for posterior fossa brain malformations, segmental cervicofacial hemangiomas, arterial anomalies, cardiac defects and coarc

A 37-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital with the complaint of progressive horizontal diplopia of six years' duration when viewing distant objects. On admission she had a slight left convergent strabismus. Homonymous diplopia was present beyond 50 cm and increased on distance fixation. Both eyes were fully mobile in the horizontal plane with a mild decrease in the velocity of horizontal eye movement to the left, and slight impairment of upward eye movement. The left eye did not fully adduct during convergence. The right pupil was slightly larger than the left. Prism cover test showed 6

Developmental venous anomaly (DVA) is now considered common and benign disease within the field of cerebral vascular malformation. Though symptomatic DVA is uncommon, further management is necessary to alleviate the symptoms and signs induced by symptomatic DVA, such as parenchymal hemorrhage, venous infarction, brain edema, obstructive hydrocephalus, and nerve root compression. From the viewpoint of obstructive hydrocephalus, mostly resulted from obstruction of aqueduct of Sylvius. Herein, we reported a case with presentation of obstructive hydrocephalus caused by DVA induced fourth ventricle

Cerebral cavernous angiomas consist of well-circumscribed collections of thin-walled sinusoidal vascular channels lacking the intervening brain tissue. They are present in 0.4-0.8% of the population, and can occur in a sporadic or familial form. Most common symptoms are seizures, hemorrhage, and focal neurological deficits. The annual bleeding rate of the patient is reported to be 0.25%-20%. High-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a useful diagnostic tool with a high degree of sensitivity and specificity. Microsurgical excision of the lesion is a good treatment choice for cavernous

Vascular malformations are infrequent causes of aqueductal stenoses, developmental venous anomaly (DVA) being the rarest among them. DVAs, also known as venous angiomas, are congenital in origin and characterized by dilatation of vessels in the superficial and deep venous system. Although they are usually clinically silent, they can be complicated by hemorrhage, seizures and neurologic deficits. Herein, we report MR imaging findings of a 7-year-old girl whose hydrocephalus was due to an abnormal vein coursing through the aqueduct.

Developmental venous anomaly (DVA) is the most common type of intracranial vascular malformation. These lesions are benign and are considered to be non-pathological variants of normal deep parenchymal veins. Although most of them are asymptomatic, a small subset of them located in aqueductal region have been reported to cause obstructive hydrocephalus. The authors present an interesting case of biventricular hydrocephalus secondary to a DVA located on the proximal aqueduct in an adolescent patient. This case is discussed with in corroboration with current literature and management recommendati

A 35-year-old man presented with a sudden headache and disturbance of consciousness. On admission, his consciousness level was Japan Coma Scale 100. Computed tomography disclosed a subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) and right cerebellar hematoma. Angiography was performed and, at first, arteriovenous malformation of the posterior fossa was diagnosed. Then external decompression of the posterior fossa and ventricular drainage were performed, followed by barbiturate therapy. Repeat angiography revealed that the lesion was a venous angioma with arteriovenous shunts. On day 37, subtotal removal of the

A 50-year old male patient presented with two successive cerebral abscesses over a 9-month period. Rendu-Osler-Weber disease was diagnosed on the basis of recurrent epistaxis and telangiectasis of the mucosae and skin. In addition, many members of the patient's family had a history of epistaxis and one had a cerebral angioma of unusual location. Our patient's chest was normal on physical and radiological examination, but pulmonary angiography disclosed a small angioma. Removal of the angioma prevented further cerebral infections. The prevalence of pulmonary arterio-venous fistulae in Rendu-Osl

BACKGROUND: Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber syndrome (KTWS) is a rare syndrome characterized by the triad of cutaneous hemangiomas, venous varicosities, and osseous-soft tissue hypertrophy of the affected limb. Clinical manifestations, genetic testing, and radiologic imaging are the key steps in diagnosing this syndrome.
CASE DESCRIPTION: An 18-month-old boy was brought for follow-up brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with a history of right lower limb hypertrophy, cutaneous varicosities, and hemangiomas diagnosed at birth. A baseline MRI at 12 months revealed multiple hemorrhagic lesions within

Aqueductal stenosis is induced by widely various causes. These causes include congenital stenosis, tumor or inflammation. Among them vascular malformation is a very rare cause. In this paper we present a rare case of aqueductal stenosis caused by venous angioma. The patient was a 28-year-old female, who suffered from headache and double vision. On admission, CT and MRI showed lateral and third ventricular dilatation not but fourth ventricle, suggested aqueductal stenosis. Gd-DTPA enhanced T1-weighted MR image showed an abnormal draining vein passing through the orifice of the aqueduct. Angiogr

A rare case of a mid brain venous angioma with obstructive hydrocephalus is described. A dilated draining vein from the lesion in the aqueduct as the cause of the hydrocephalus is highlighted, and interesting features of the pathology of venous angiomas and associated cavernous hemangioma are described. The management of this interesting condition is discussed.

Vascular malformations of the central nervous system (C.N.S.) are classified by size, location, and morphologic type, distinguishing capillary telangiectasias, cavernous malformations, venous angiomas, arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) including varix of the great vein of Galen, and other vascular malformations (e.g. Sturge-Weber syndrome). The morphology and predominant location pattern of the different types of vascular malformations in the brain and spinal cord, and their embryology are reviewed. In the brain and its coverings, all types mainly AVMs and venous angiomas do occur, representi

BACKGROUND: Organic personality disorder is a - nowadays - rare and often overlooked diagnosis characterized by persistent personality changes resulting from a direct physiological effect of a medical condition. CASE PRESENTATION: This case report presents a middle-aged male patient who was initially misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder despite longstanding neuropsychiatric symptoms, poor treatment response, and progressive functional decline. The patient exhibited impulsivity, disinhibition, cognitive deficits, and aggressive behaviour, culminating in a suicide attempt. Neuroimaging revealed a

INTRODUCTION: Emesis gravidarum is a common pathology rarely requiring hospitalization to control hydroelectrolytic and metabolic alterations. Although it is typical in the first quarter of pregnancy, it can appear in any moment of the gestation. On the other hand, venous angioma (VA) is the most frequent cerebral vascular malformation. In fact, it is a variant of the normal venous drainage of the brain and it is usually an incidental finding. VA is rarely symptomatic, unless associated with cavernous angiomas. Although uncommon, the clinical complications are very varied, bleeding being the m

Orbital lymphangioma is an uncommon, benign cystic lesion, generally manifest in childhood. It usually presents with a slowly progressive proptosis, displacement of the globe, ptosis and restriction of eye movements. Occasionally, focal lesions may remain asymptomatic. Spontaneous intraorbital haemorrhage may cause acute proptosis, compressive optic neuropathy and loss of vision. An 8-year-old girl presented with progressive left proptosis and a unilateral soft tissue mass at the supraorbital frontal region. Multiple intracranial venous angiomas were seen on MRI. Surgical decompression of the

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the frequency and characteristics of epilepsy associated with cerebral venous angiomas (VA). We examined epileptic patients in which magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed VA. The characteristics of epilepsy and its relationships to VA were studied. Out of 1020 epileptic patients submitted to MRI in a 10-year period, 4 presented with VA. All had partial seizures, most frequently complex partial, with secondary generalizations in 3. Drug resistance was observed in 2. One patient had a small area of cortical dysplasia near the VA; another had a cutaneou

Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS), also known as encephalotrigeminal angiomatosis, is a rare congenital neurocutaneous syndrome characterised by a triad of cutaneous, ocular and central nervous system findings. In the majority of the patients, it manifests as unilateral facial port-wine stain (PWS), which is a capillary malformation frequently affecting the first branch (ophthalmic division) of the trigeminal nerve. The ocular manifestations involve glaucoma and choroidal haemangiomas, whereas intracranial leptomeningeal venous angiomas form part of the central nervous system involvement. There are

Developmental venous anomalies (DVA), previously known as cerebral venous malformations or venous angiomas, are common benign entities often incidentally discovered at MRI examinations. They are non‑pathologic variants of normal deep parenchymal veins that are usually asymptomatic, but they can rarely cause some complications. In this paper we described a rare case of obstructive hydrocephalus caused by a DVA located within the cerebral aqueduct and we also reviewed the previous literature on this topic.
