Clinical decision of centric relation.

Centric relation (CR) was used in the complete dentures for edentulous jaws firstly. Then, CR was gradually applied in the clinical diagnosis and treatment of dentate jaws. Regarding the application of CR in dentate jaws, there are many doubts about its rationality. For instance, should CR be the core of diagnosis and treatment of temporomandibular disorders? Should CR be used as the jaw position of establishing occlusion in occlusal reconstruction? Should CR serve as the target jaw position in orthodontic treatment? Meanwhile, varieties of CR clinical applications are objective. According to

Is There "A Best" Centric Relation Record? Centric Relation Records, Condyle Positions, and Their Practical Significance.

PURPOSE: To investigate if and how the positions of condyles in centric relation (CR) varied from each other using different CR records. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Condylar positions in CR were repeatedly recorded by four licensed clinicians in 81 stomatognathically healthy, fully dentate subjects with six different types of CR records. The maxillary casts were mounted in articulators after individual facebow transfer, and the mandibular casts were mounted with a central bearing point (CBP) registration on the tip of the Gothic arch. Mean values from three registrations of the centric condylar po

Centric relation-A biological perspective of a technical concept.

BACKGROUND: Few terms and concepts have been so extensively debated in dentistry as the words 'centric relation' (CR). Debates involve its biological, diagnostic and therapeutic usefulness. METHODS: A review of the literature on the current concepts on CR as a diagnostic or therapeutic aid in dentistry was provided. Clinical trials assessing the superiority of one CR recording method over the others to identify patients with temporomandibular disorders (diagnostic use) or to manage patients with prosthodontic or orthodontic needs (therapeutic use) were tentatively included. RESULTS: Due to t

Technique for recording the centric relation of digitally fabricated complete dentures.

A straightforward intraoral gothic arch tracer for recording the centric relation (CR) of digitally fabricated dentures is described. The gothic arch tracer and evaluated dentures were 3-dimensionally (3D) printed in a single step using polylactic acid. The tracing plate was located on the palatal side of the maxillary denture, with 3 needles arranged in an equilateral triangle connected to the fixation plates on the anterior side of the mandible. The height of the needles ensured the occlusal vertical distance (OVD) and stability of the maxillary and mandibular evaluation dentures. Computer-a

[Research progress on the relationship between centric relation and orthodontic treatment].

Centric relation (CR) is one of the core research contents in orthodontics, prosthodontics, and gnathology, acting as an important physiological factor in reconstructing the occlusion and adjusting the occlusal relationship. For over a century, CR is still a controversial subject in dentistry. CR has been redefined for several times, and recently, its application has been widened in orthodontics, including orthodontic diagnosis, clinical examination and analysis, and treatment goals. The purpose of this article is to review the definition of CR, its relationship with malocclusion, and the appl

Condylar repositioning in bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy with centric relation bite.

PURPOSE: Changes in the condylar position after bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy (BSSO) can cause many complications, such as condylar dysfunction and increased risk of relapse. This study evaluated a simple approach for condylar repositioning in BSSO as a method to rapidly obtain the patient's centric relation (CR) bite position without prefabricated equipment. METHODS: The study subjects included 9 patients (5 men and 4 women; mean age, 23.7 years) who underwent BSSO in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Hallym University hospital between December 2009 and March 201

Different methods of determining centric relation - comparison with a digital mandibular motion analyser.

BACKGROUND: Finding and registering the maxillary-mandibular jaw relation is crucial in dental practice. Several comparative studies have been conducted to investigate the reproducibility and accuracy of techniques for determining the centric relation (CR) position of the mandible. The aim of our study was to determine which of seven different CR determination methods had the smallest deviation from the theoretical zero with the help of a digital mandibular motion analyser. The chosen theoretical zero position, the maximal intercuspal position (MIP), is the most reproducible and widely used po

How a Discrepancy Between Centric Relation and Maximum Intercuspation Alters Cephalometric and Condylar Measurements.

OBJECTIVE: The authors' objective was to determine, by means of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), if there is a significant difference between the cephalometric and condylar measurements obtained in maximum intercuspation (MIP) and those obtained in centric relation (CR), which would interfere in orthodontic diagnosis and planning. METHODS: The sample consisted of 30 randomly selected patients (15 men and 15 women, mean age 14 years, CR ≠ MIP between 1 mm and 2 mm) who had undergone orthodontic treatment. This retrospective study used CBCT scans, one in MIP and the other in CR. Cephalomet

Reproducibility of 2 methods to locate centric relation in healthy individuals and TMD patients.

No conclusive evidence exists for any maxillomandibular relationship as the preferable treatment position. Measurement reliability of 2 different methods to attempt to locate centric relation in control and TMD patients was assessed to determine if both methods lead to the same position. A group of 27 controls and 91 TMD patients were examined using the Research Diagnostic Criteria for TMD (RDC/TMD). Three patient groups were recruited: 27 patients with myofascial pain (MYO), 34 patients with disc displacement without reduction (ID), and 30 patients with osteoarthritis (OA). For each study par

Discrepancy between centric relation and therapeutic position in TMJ disc displacement: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular disorders often involve internal derangements such as anterior disc displacement, which can alter the centric relation (CR). Clinicians frequently rely on a splint-guided therapeutic position (ThP), without imaging confirmation of the condyle-disc relationship before for fabrication and adjustment of a repositioning splint. This case report presents magnetic resonance imaging across two mandibular positions-centric occlusion (CO) and ThP-and describes a mismatch between disc position and condylar seating. It suggests that partial disc recapture observed in a ThP m
