James Willocks and the innovation of fetal cephalometry.

James Willocks (1928-2004), a Glasgow obstetrician, was an important pioneer of obstetric ultrasound and the originator of the first clinically useful technique of fetal cephalometry. He collaborated with Tom Duggan, an engineer, who designed and built an electronic cephalometer to be used in conjunction with a Kelvin Hughes industrial flaw detector. Working in the Royal Maternity Hospital, Willocks was able to measure the biparietal diameter to an accuracy of better than 2mm. This major innovation enabled fetal growth in the third trimester to be accurately charted and thus greatly improved t

CT-Cephalometry-A study in Indian population.

Determination of obstructive site in obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is of paramount importance is planning the management. Cephalometric evaluation of lateral X-rays when combined with clinical assessment and fibreoptic examination of the airway helps in locating the site of obstruction. The usual technique of cephalometry has been modified so as to give a better delineation of the soft tissues. Holding a 2mm card board in the mouth and using barium paste helped in more accurate calculations. Using our technique, various parameters have been quantified and a number of controls were studied and

Analysis of craniofacial asymmetry by multiplane cephalometry.

A three-dimensional, multiplane cephalometric analysis is presented. This analysis permits visualization of skeletal midlines at selected depths of the craniofacial complex. When the midlines and associated anatomic structures are studied sequentially, the individual midlines may be combined conceptually into a warped midsagittal "plane." This localizes craniofacial asymmetry in the posteroanterior and basilar views. The study of structures in various coronal and transverse planes makes it possible to measure and record the three-dimensional relationships of anatomic structures to one another.

Dosimetry of absorbed radiation in radiographic cephalometry.

Absorbed radiation was measured in various craniofacial tissues on an adult phantom (Alderson Rando) when conventional cephalometric radiographic techniques were used. The views examined were lateral, 45 degrees oblique, posteroanterior, lateral temporomandibular joint tomograph, and basilar (submental-vertex). Absorbed radiation was expressed in micrograys for the individual views and for combinations of views as customarily used in orthodontics and oral surgery. These data are compared with findings of contemporary investigators and the magnitude of the doses is compared with those in the li

Dolichocephaly--a source of error in serial cephalometry.

Two patients are presented in whom ultrasonic cephalometry suggested intrauterine fetal growth retardation. The respective newborn infants were normally grown and had dolichocephaly with a normal head circumference. Dolichocephaly should be considered when cephalometry alone suggests a diagnosis of placental insufficiency.

[New directions in cranio-cervico-mandibular cephalometry].

A pilot survey has been conducted on a sample of 22 adolescents in order to correlate the cranio-facial morphology and the condylar position with the mandibular posture, cranio-cervical posture and airway adequacy. Cephalograms extended to the cervical column and oblique lateral trans-cranial X-Rays with the standard projection has been adopted. The use of specific cephalometrics parameters allowed to separate the sample in sub-groups with similar variables and to obtain diagnostic indications. The utility of an analysis not only cranio-basal but extended to the cranio-cervical, intercervical,

[Cephalometry: a critical comparative study (author's transl)].

Changes have occurred in the original concepts which led to the current use, either totally or partially, of the various cephalometric tests, and the terminology employed varies from one author to another. A comparative study of the principal measurements used was therefore conducted, based on this acquired knowledge. After discussing the relative values of the reference points and constructions, the authors attempt to establish a relationship between the different evaluation methods used for each element, bony, alveolar, and dental, which are necessary for diagnosis, and for which functional

Cephalometry and prediction of oral appliance treatment outcome.

RATIONALE: Predicting which patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) will be successfully treated with mandibular advancement splints (MAS) remains elusive. Developing simple daytime measurements and tests to predict treatment outcome would enhance MAS treatment. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess the clinical utility of anthropomorphic measurements and cephalometric X-rays in the prediction of MAS treatment outcome in OSA. METHODS: Anthropomorphic measurements and cephalometric X-rays from 72 OSA patients who had presented to a tertiary referral sleep clinic were analyzed

Three-dimensional cephalometry using individual skeletal laser technology models.

When planning operations on the facial skull, transversal asymmetries of the maxillo-mandibular complex cannot be adequately assessed using conventional two-dimensional (2D) x-ray cephalometry. On eight patients who presented with facial skull asymmetries, a three-dimensional (3D) laser technology model (LTM) using CT data was fabricated. Five sagittal plane points and six symmetry points were marked on the LTM, measured with the FlashPoint 3-D Digitizer and then geometrically converted, such that using the sagittal plane points, sella, basion, and nasion, a method could be developed that allo

[Three-dimensional cephalometry: applications in clinical practice and research].

A 3D cephalometric analysis method from scanner acquisition has been developed thanks to a long collaboration between Dr Treil and the Department of Orthodontics in Toulouse III University. It allows a perfect knowledge of maxillo-facial architecture using fourteen landmarks related to the neuromatricial axis of facial growth. These landmarks can be identified without ambiguity. The marking of each tooth relative to dental arches (gravity centre coordinates and torque and tipping of each tooth), and the location of arches relative to maxillo-facial frame are given by the analysis. [Three-dimensional imaging and cephalometry of cranio-facial asymmetry].

The 75th meeting of the French Orthodontics Society will be held in Biarritz May 8-9-10-11 2002. The main topic for discussion will be: "facial asymmetry". During the meeting, authors will present study of facial asymmetries using a new innovative three-dimensional cephalometry. The method combines CT scans data, anatomical landmarks and mathematical tools to create, using the "Cepha" software, a 3D model of the human face. Balance and symmetry of the model are stable enough to define normality for each individual even with different ethnic and cultural origins. Unbalance and asymmetry charact

[Cephalometry study of craniofacial and upper airway in boys with OSAS].

BACKGROUND: Methanogenic archaea are of importance to the global C-cycle and to biological methane (CH4) production through anaerobic digestion and pure culture. Here, the individual and combined effects of copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), acetate, and propionate on the metabolism of the autotrophic, hydrogenotrophic methanogen Methanococcus maripaludis S2 were investigated. Cu, Zn, acetate, and propionate may interfere directly and indirectly with the acetyl-CoA synthesis and biological CH4 production. Thus, these compounds can compromise or improve the performance of M. maripaludis, an organism which

A lateral cephalometry study of patients with neurofibromatosis type 1.

PURPOSE: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an autosomal dominant transmitted tumour suppressor syndrome and also a bone disease. Osseous dysplasia affecting the craniofacial region is characteristic of NF1. The aim of this study was to analyse the lateral cephalograms of NF1 patients in comparison to individuals who were not affected by this condition in order to describe the skeletal phenotype of NF1 in more detail. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study comprises the lateral cephalograms of 172 patients with established NF1 diagnoses (female = 85, male = 87). NF1 patients were distinguished by ra
