An update of the Culicoides (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) checklist for the Balkans.

BACKGROUND: The prime significance of species belonging to the genus Culicoides Latreille, 1809 (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) is their ability to transmit viruses such as bluetongue virus (BTV) to wild and domestic ruminants. Prior to 1998, BTV was considered exotic in Europe, but according to recent history of its outbreaks, it has become endemic in southern and eastern European countries circulating beyond its expected historical limits, into the Balkan region. The wind-borne long-distance dispersal of Culicoides spp. over water bodies and local spreading between farms emphasize the necessity o

Nematocera (Ceratopogonidae, Psychodidae, Simuliidae and Culicidae) and control methods.

The biology, veterinary importance and control of certain Nematocera are described and discussed. Culicoides spp. (family Ceratopogonidae) transmit the arboviruses of bluetongue (BT), African horse sickness (AHS), bovine ephemeral fever (BEF) and Akabane. Some other arboviruses have been isolated from these species, while fowl pox has been transmitted experimentally by Culicoides. These insects are vectors of the parasitic protozoans Leucocytozoon caulleryi and Haemoproteus nettionis, and the parasitic nematodes Onchocerca gutturosa, O. gibsoni and O. cervicalis. They also cause recurrent summ

Establishment of a mouse allergy model for Culicoides (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae).

BACKGROUND: Culicoides is a genus of ubiquitous biting midges (Ceratopogonidae). Female midges have blood-sucking habit. They not only bite and harass humans and animals but also may be an important vector of disease transmission. Therefore, building an animal allergy model caused by Culicoides biting is very beneficial for studying its pathogenesis and exploring the therapeutic methods. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Kunming mice were used in this study to build the model and sensitised by two-step injection of midge extracts. Scratching behaviour and histological examination were used to check the im

Experimental transmission of Leishmania (Mundinia) parasites by biting midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae).

Leishmania parasites, causative agents of leishmaniasis, are currently divided into four subgenera: Leishmania, Viannia, Sauroleishmania and Mundinia. The recently established subgenus Mundinia has a wide geographical distribution and contains five species, three of which have the potential to infect and cause disease in humans. While the other Leishmania subgenera are transmitted exclusively by phlebotomine sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae), natural vectors of Mundinia remain uncertain. This study investigates the potential of sand flies and biting midges of the genus Culicoides (Diptera: Cer

Evidence incriminating midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) as potential vectors of Leishmania in Australia.

The first autochthonous Leishmania infection in Australia was reported by Rose et al. (2004) and the parasite was characterised as a unique species. The host was the red kangaroo (Macropus rufus) but the transmitting vector was unknown. To incriminate the biological vector, insect trapping by a variety of methods was undertaken at two field sites of known Leishmania transmission. Collected sand flies were identified to species level and were screened for Leishmania DNA using a semi-quantitative real-time PCR. Collections revealed four species of sand fly, with a predominance of the reptile bit

Anatomy and function of the mouthparts of the biting midge, Culicoides sanguisuga (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae).

The mouthparts and upper food canal of the biting midge, Culicoides sanguisuga, are described with light, scanning electron, and transmission electron microscopy. The stylets (labrum, hypopharynx, mandibles, laciniae) are individually described so that their union into the piercingsucking syntrophium can be understoo. Labial anatomy and relationships to the syntrophium are also described. Syntrophial integrity is based on a complex system in which (1) the mandibles articulate with each other and with the hypopharynx; (2) the edges of the labrum are hooked over the sides of the mandibles; (3) t

Factors influencing the ingestion of Onchocerca cervicalis microfilariae by Culicoides variipennis (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae).

Culicoides variipennis were fed under controlled conditions on two ponies that exhibited seasonal changes in Onchocerca cervicalis microfilarial (mf) skin density and skin distribution. The seasonal changes did not radically affect mf ingestion. Flies were fed on the umbilicus of infected ponies by two methods: individual feeding in consecutive order at the same site, or by mass feeding. Linear regression analysis indicated that ingestion of microfilaria was independent of feeding time and engorged weight. In the individual feeding data, there was a trend toward an increased ingestion of mf as

Biting of anthropophilic Culicoides fulvithorax (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae), a vector of Mansonella perstans in Nigeria.

Anthropophilic Culicoides were investigated in a rural community endemic for Mansonella perstans in Ijebu North area of western Nigeria between December 2003 and October 2004. Three hundred and fifty-nine adults of Culicoides fulvithorax collected by human bait in the morning were dissected for Mansonella perstans larvae, and 1.95% of infection rate was found. Seasonal abundance of C. fulvithorax was investigated by monthly biting rates, and showed that higher prevalence was observed in rainy season, with peak in September. Culicoides prevalence was positively correlated with rainfall and rela

Advancing knowledge on Culicoides biting midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae), vectors of medical, and veterinary importance.

Culicoides biting midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) remain some of the most understudied vector species, despite their important role in the global transmission of viral and parasitic disease agents of animals and humans. Over the last decade, advances in molecular taxonomy combined with outbreaks of pathogens like bluetongue virus (BTV), epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus (EHDV), and Oropouche virus have driven a burst of new research activity on this genus. In this Special Collection, we highlight some of the exciting work being done on Culicoides in the United States and Europe. Topics in

Topical, contact, and oral susceptibility of adult Culicoides biting midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) to fluralaner.

BACKGROUND: Culicoides biting midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) are economically important blood-feeding pests closely associated with livestock production. They are the principal vectors of two hemorrhagic disease viruses affecting both wild and domestic ruminants within the US: bluetongue virus (BTV) and epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus (EHDV). BTV impacts the US agriculture sector through direct commodity loss and strict international livestock trade restrictions. Yet, despite posing a considerable threat to US livestock, Culicoides are understudied, and management strategies are lacking

A photographic key to the adult female biting midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae: Culicoides) of Florida, USA.

The biting midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae: Culicoides) are a diverse group of blood-feeding flies that includes numerous pest and vector species. Major gaps exist in our knowledge of the biology and ecology of the majority of Culicoides spp., due in part to a lack of keys for identifying the biting midges of a given region. In Florida, USA, The Sand Flies of Florida (Blanton and Wirth, 1979) has been a foundational resource for biting midge identification since its publication. The identification keys to the 47 biting midge species (and one subspecies) in The Sand Flies of Florida are not il

Redescription of immature stages of Culicoides paraensis (Goeldi) (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae), vector of the Oropouche virus.

Oropouche fever is an emerging zoonotic disease caused by Oropouche virus (OROV). It has two distinct transmission cycles, with the anthropophilic biting midge Culicoides paraensis (Goeldi) (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) being the primary vector in the urban cycle. Species identification of Culicoides typically has been carried out on the basis of morphological characters, but molecular tools applied to taxonomy can provide rapid and efficient methods to the identification of vector species. The aim of this work was to obtain the first DNA barcode for C. paraensis collected in Argentina and redesc

DNA barcoding and surveillance sampling strategies for Culicoides biting midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) in southern India.

BACKGROUND: Culicoides spp. biting midges transmit bluetongue virus (BTV), the aetiological agent of bluetongue (BT), an economically important disease of ruminants. In southern India, hyperendemic outbreaks of BT exert high cost to subsistence farmers in the region, impacting on sheep production. Effective Culicoides spp. monitoring methods coupled with accurate species identification can accelerate responses for minimising BT outbreaks. Here, we assessed the utility of sampling methods and DNA barcoding for detection and identification of Culicoides spp. in southern India, in order to provid

Tissue Tropisms and Transstadial Transmission of a Rickettsia Endosymbiont in the Highland Midge, Culicoides impunctatus (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae).

Rickettsia is a genus of intracellular bacteria which can manipulate host reproduction and alter sensitivity to natural enemy attack in a diverse range of arthropods. The maintenance of Rickettsia endosymbionts in insect populations can be achieved through both vertical and horizontal transmission routes. For example, the presence of the symbiont in the follicle cells and salivary glands of Bemisia whiteflies allows Belli group Rickettsia transmission via the germ line and plants, respectively. However, the transmission routes of other Rickettsia bacteria, such as those in the Torix group of t
