[Cercaria dermatitis (swimmer's itch). Case report of cercaria dermatitis caused by Trichobilharzia (Digena, Schistosomatidae)].

A 63-year-old woman developed a pruritic exanthema on the extremities after one hour of work in her garden pond in Planegg, Southern Bavaria. As the appropriate vectors (ducks and snails) were present, we made the tentative diagnosis of cercarial dermatitis (swimmer's itch). By different serological methods (cercarial fluorescent antibody test, cercarial Hüllen reaction, circumoval precipitin test) antibodies against cercariae could be demonstrated in the serum of the patient 14 days later. Cercarial dermatitis appears worldwide, but in Central Europe the disease is often not recognized.

Ultrastructure of the Schistosoma mansoni cercaria.

The cercaria of the schistosome parasite is a short-lived, free-swimming larval stage that is infective for the mammalian, definitive host. This atlas describes the ultrastructure of the cells that comprise the cercaria of Schistosoma mansoni, a leading causative agent of human schistosomiasis. In addition to the cells which make up the various organ systems, such as the nervous, tegumental, osmoregulatory, muscular and primordial digestive systems, also we show the ultrastructure of those cells whose organization or location are not as well defined structurally but are essential nevertheless

Transport of Schistosoma japonicum cercariae and the feasibility of niclosamide for cercariae control.

Field experiments were conducted in southwestern China to estimate the distances over which cercariae of Schistosoma japonicum are transported and remain infective in village irrigation ditches and to determine the feasibility of interrupting this transport using niclosamide, the molluscicide commonly used for snail control in this environment. The number of worms recovered from bioassay mice downstream from experimentally introduced cercariae, but without niclosamide, decreased about 90% over the first 100 m of ditch and then remained essentially constant for the remaining 300 m of the ditch

Ultrastructural and cytochemical aspects of Schistosoma mansoni cercaria.

An alternative to identify the critical processes necessary to the parasite establishment of the host is to focus on the evolutionary stage responsible for the primary invasion, i.e. the infection structure. The objective of this study was to ultrastructurally characterize Schistosoma mansoni cercariae, using cytochemical techniques. In order to identify basic proteins, techniques such as ethanolic phosphotungstic acid (EPTA) and ammoniacal silver staining were used. Calcium sites location was achieved using the Hepler technique and to evidence anionic groups, we used cationic ferritin particl

Schistosoma mansoni cercaria and schistosomulum antigens in serodiagnosis of schistosomiasis.

Schistosoma mansoni cercaria and schistosomulum obtained in vitro were used in immunofluorescence (IF) tests and indirect hemagglutination (IHA) tests of 137 study sera, 44 from subjects infected with S. mansoni and 93 from healthy subjects residing outside areas endemic for the disease. The results of these tests were compared with those obtained by testing the same sera using conventional adult worm antigen, and also with the initial clinical and parasitologic diagnoses of the 137 subjects providing the study sera. Regarding sera from acute versus chronic cases, IF testing of the acute sera

Conditions for labeling of Schistosoma mansoni cercaria with technetium-99m.

Study of the labeling of Schistosoma mansoni cercaria with technetium-99m (99mTc) at room temperature (25 degrees C) and 37 degrees C shows that the incorporation of radioactivity in this cercaria increases with the increase in stannous chloride concentration, reaching a constant value threshold at 130.00 microM. Strong binding of the 99mTc was obtained since the radioactivity was not washed out. The characteristic motion of the cercaria, labeled at 25 degrees C and 37 degrees C, was only modified at the concentration of 1300 microM for both temperatures, showing that the methodology here desc

Chlorination of Schistosoma mansoni cercariae.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis is a water-based disease acquired through contact with cercaria-infested water. Communities living in endemic regions often rely on parasite-contaminated freshwater bodies for their daily water contact activities, resulting in recurring schistosomiasis infection. In such instances, water treatment can provide safe water on a household or community scale. However, to-date there are no water treatment guidelines that provide information on how to treat water containing schistosome cercariae. Here, we rigorously test the effectiveness of chlorine against Schistosoma ma

Cercaria-schistosomulum surface transformation of Trichobilharzia szidati and its putative immunological impact.

Schistosome cercariae of the genus Trichobilharzia are the causative agent of swimmers' itch. In order to characterize the changes in parasites during and after the penetration of the host skin, in vitro and in vivo (in ducks and mice) transformations of T. szidati cercariae to schistosomula were performed. Ultrastructural observation revealed that cercariae possess a simple outer tegumental membrane with a thick glycocalyx. As with human schistosomes, the latter structure disappears during transformation and a new double membrane with putative protective function is formed. Our biochemical an

Transmission of Bilharziasis. 2. Production of Cercariae.

While a knowledge of cercarial infection rates is essential to an understanding of the dynamics of bilharziasis transmission, rather little attention has been paid to methods of determining these rates. The author considers that the most valuable information is likely to be obtained if studies of infectivity are carried out hand in hand with studies of snail population density and structure. Different methods employed in examining snail populations for infection are discussed, together with the patterns of Schistosoma haematobium and S. mansoni cercarial production in relation to natural infec

Schistosoma japonicum: proteomics analysis of differentially expressed proteins from ultraviolet-attenuated cercariae compared to normal cercariae.

Schistosomiasis is considered the most important human helminthiasis in terms of morbidity and mortality. In this study, comparative soluble proteomic analysis of normal cercariae and ultraviolet-irradiated attenuated cercariae (UVAC) from Schistosoma japonicum were carried out in view of the high efficiency of irradiation-attenuated cercariae vaccine. The results revealed that some proteins showed significant differential expression in the parasite after treatment with ultraviolet light. Total 20 protein spots were identified by mass spectrometry, corresponded to five groups according to thei

Molecular identification of cercaria Fasciola gigantica in lymnaeid snails in Kulon Progo, Yogyakarta.

Lymnaeid snails play an essential role in transmitting fasciolosis as intermediate hosts. Therefore, this study aims to use the molecular method to identify liver fluke in lymnaeid snails. A total of 320 lymnaeid snails were collected from a rice field. The samples were dissected to collect cercaria and identified using polymerase chain reaction. Furthermore, the internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) was used as the target gene to identify the species of cercaria. The result showed that 3.75% (12/320) of the snails were infected by Fasciola gigantica, while the phylogenetic tree based on ITS2 s

New insights into the reaction of Schistosoma mansoni cercaria to the human complement system.

Schistosomes are parasitic worms that have a complex life cycle. The larval stage cercaria, infectious to mammals, is described as highly susceptible to the complement system, largely due to the glycocalyx that covers the cercarial membrane. In an attempt to have a more complete understanding of cercaria reaction to the complement system, three different approaches were used. Live cercariae exposed to normal human serum (NHS) as source of complement factors were assessed for (i) membrane attack complex (MAC) deposition on the parasite surface, (ii) cercaria survival rate by Hoechst staining of

[Significance of schistosome lectins in the host allergic reaction evoked by penetration of cercaria].

Cercarial dermatitis is a skin allergic response caused by larval stages (cercariae) of the trematode family Schistosomatidae. In the Czech Republic the main causative agents of the disease are bird schistosomes of the genus Trichobilharzia. In the past it was supposed that cercariae of animal schistosomes die soon after the penetration into the human skin. However, we observed a migration and partial development of T. szidati cercariae within a nonspecific (mouse) host. The initial development of parasites in mice was similar to that observed in a specific host (duck) as well as to that descr

Ultraviolet disinfection of Schistosoma mansoni cercariae in water.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease that is transmitted by skin contact with waterborne schistosome cercariae. Mass drug administration with praziquantel is an effective control method, but it cannot prevent reinfection if contact with cercariae infested water continues. Providing safe water for contact activities such as laundry and bathing can help to reduce transmission. In this study we examine the direct effect of UV light on Schistosoma mansoni cercariae using ultraviolet light-emitting diodes (UV LEDs) and a low-pressure (LP) mercury arc discharge lamp. In vitro and in vivo encystment of the cercariae of Echinostoma caproni.

In vitro and in vivo studies were conducted on the cercariae of Echinostoma caproni. Of the 15 media tried, 2 resulted in effective in vitro encystment in petri dish cultures maintained at 23 +/- 1 C. They were a Locke's--artificial springwater (ASW) (1:1) medium (67% encystment) and a Biomphalaria glabrata embryonic cell line medium (23% encystment). To obtain large numbers of in vitro--formed cysts, finger bowl cultures containing 40 ml of the Locke's-ASW (1:1) medium were used at 23 +/- 1 C. Of 3,000 cercariae tested, 1,890 (63%) were encysted in this medium by 48 hr. Most of these cysts lo

Localization of the cystogenous glands of Opisthorchis viverrini cercariae.

Opisthorchiasis in northeastern Thailand is an important etiology of cholangiocarcinoma. To form the infectious stage, free swimming cercariae penetrate cyprinid fish, shed their tails, and then secret a cystic substance to cover their larval stage to form metacercariae in the fish body. We determined the location of the cystogenous glands in Opisthorchis viverrini cercariae. The cercariae and metacercariae were obtained from the naturally infected snail host, Bithynia siamensis goniomphalos and from cyprinid fish, respectively. The cyst walls of the metacercariae were separated and used to im

Schistosoma mansoni: chemical stabilization of cercariae by aldehydes.

Chemically stabilized cercariae of Schistosoma mansoni have been developed by inactivating surface glycoproteins which are essential for their survival. The inactivation was achieved by reaction with 0.01-0.1% glutaraldehyde, 0.1-1% formaldehyde, and 0.37-3.7 microliters citraconic anhydride. The cercariae lost their viability but retained the ability to exclude trypan blue for up to 2 years in a manner similar to live cercariae and in contrast to cercariae killed by other means, which took up the dye immediately. The chemically stabilized cercariae reacted with polyclonal and monoclonal antis
