Assessment of menstruation in the vervet (Cercopithecus aethiops).

Vervet monkeys (Chlorocebus aethiops) are Old World nonhumans that display attenuated menstruation that requires detection by vaginal swab. The physiology underlying attenuated menstruation in this species has not been previously studied. To fill this gap, we evaluated endometrial cell proliferation, steroid receptor localization and expression of menstruation-associated matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) enzymes in vervets during natural and artificial menstrual cycles. The artificial cycles were induced by sequentially treating ovariectomized animals with estradiol (E(2)) and progesterone (P). B

Disseminate Cryptococcosis in a guenon (Cercopithecus ascanius).

Pneumonia caused by Mannheimia (Pasteurella) haemolytica is a highly fatal disease of bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis). Leukotoxin (Lkt), secreted by M. haemolytica, is an important virulence factor of this organism, and is cytolytic to bighorn sheep leukocytes. Previously, we have shown that CD18, the beta subunit of beta2 integrins, serves as the receptor for Lkt on bovine leukocytes. Furthermore, anti-CD18 antibodies inhibit Lkt-induced cytotoxicity of bighorn sheep leukocytes. Therefore, we hypothesized that Lkt utilizes CD18 as its receptor on bighorn sheep leukocytes. Dilated cardiomyopathy in a De Brazza's monkey (Cercopithecus neglectus).

BACKGROUND: Cardiomyopathies have been reported in many primates. They may result from an inflammatory response to an infectious agent, nutritional deficiency, familial-genetic inheritance or toxic agents, but in many cases they are idiopathic. METHODS: A De Brazza's monkey (Cercopithecus neglectus) presented with weight loss and inappetence. Physical examination, blood collection and diagnostic imaging and an electrocardiogram were performed. RESULTS: Radiographs and echocardiogram revealed pleural effusion with partially collapsed lungs, cardiomegaly, and reduced myocardial contractility f

Leptospires in vervet monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops Sabaeus) on Barbados.

Agglutinins to Leptospira were found at titers of greater than or equal to 1:100 in 150 of 501 (29.9%) vervet monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops sabaeus) bled within 1 mo of capture in Barbados. Including a further 34 of 145 bled within 1 yr of capture, the seropositivity prevalence was 28.5%. A further 35 monkeys (5.4%) had traces of agglutinins or gave titers of 1:50. The proportion of seropositive adults (41.5%) was more than twice that of seropositive immature monkeys (17.6%). Among adults, 49.2% of males and 35.7% of females were seropositive, while among juveniles proportions of seropositiv

Twinning in a colony of vervet monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops sabaeus).

From 1975 through 1991, three sets of twins were born from a total of 693 live and stillborn births (0.43%) at the UCLA/Sepulveda Veterans Administration Medical Center Nonhuman Primate Research Laboratory, CA. None of the twin's mothers were related. Positive patrilineal relationships have not been established; however, a brother (not a twin) of the first set of twins may have fathered the third set. All twins were born to multiparous females and, in each case, only one infant survived beyond 4 days. One set of twins was dizygotic; the genetic status of the others is unknown. © 1994 Wiley-Lis

Cecal volvulus in two African green monkeys (Cercopithecus athiops sabeus).

Following short-term signs of weakness, depression, and/or anorexia of less than 24 h, two adult male African green monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops sabeus) of St. Kitts origin died from complications of cecal volvulus. Gaseous distention was radiologically apparent in one animal. Necropsy of both monkeys revealed cecal volvulus, one at the ileocecal junction and one involving a segment of the distal portion of the ileum and cecum. Congestion and hemorrhage were evident microscopically in the lamina propria of the affected intestine, with variable necrosis.

FATAL FASCIOLOIDES MAGNA IN A LESSER SPOT-NOSED GUENON (CERCOPITHECUS PETAURISTA).

A 4-yr-old male intact lesser spot-nosed guenon (Cercopithecus petaurista), housed at a North American zoological facility, presented with acute lethargy, inappetence, and mild neurologic signs. Physical examination revealed hemorrhagic pleural effusion in the right hemithorax. This guenon's condition improved over several days but then deteriorated, and the guenon presented with lethargy and weakness. A hemorrhagic pleural effusion was identified within the left hemithorax. The guenon developed respiratory and cardiac arrest while anesthetized. Gross examination revealed tract formation in th

Helminth Infections in Wild Golden Monkeys (Cercopithecus mitis kandti) in Rwanda.

Habitat loss is one of the greatest threats to extant primates, with effects that are immediate and time delayed. Identifying how habitat loss affects wildlife, particularly vulnerable populations, is important to understand the mechanisms that can lead to population decline. Golden monkeys are a subspecies of guenon with two extant populations: one larger (> 4000) on the Virunga Massif, and the other smaller (~200) in Gishwati Forest. Once connected, deforestation over five decades separated the forests of Volcanoes National Park (VNP) (on the Virunga Massif) and Gishwati Forest and decreased

Morphology and morphometry of the normal lung of the adult vervet monkey (Cercopithecus aethiops).

The lungs of four adult specimens of the vervet monkey (Cercopithecus aethiops) have been examined by transmission and scanning electron microscopy. A morphometric evaluation of the structural components directly involved in gas exchange has been carried out and the data have been modelled to estimate the anatomical diffusing capacity of the lung. The upper air-conducting airways of the lung were lined by an epithelium characterized by ciliated cells among which were dispersed goblet cells. The alveolar surface was lined by squamous type I pneumocytes and cuboidal type II granular pneumocytes.

A New STLV-1 in a household pet Cercopithecus nictitans from Gabon.

A recent serological survey of wild-born captive monkeys from Gabon, Central Africa, revealed that 1 of 20 Cercopithecus nictitans tested was infected with a new simian T cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (STLV-1). We investigated the molecular relationship between the STLV-1 strain present in this C. nictitans (CN01) and the other available HTLV/STLV strains. Phylogenetic analysis of the env (gp46 and gp21) region showed that the new STLV(nict) clusters with the HTLV-1/STLV-1 group and not with the other nictitans STLVs belonging to the STLV-3 group. Moreover, our new STLV(nict) is closely relat

Vaccination of the vervet monkey (Cercopithecus aethiops) against infection with Schistosoma mansoni.

Pilot experiments were carried out to assess the immunizing potential of radiation-attenuated cercariae of S. mansoni. Groups of 4 monkeys each were vaccinated 4-5 times at 3-5-week intervals using cercariae which had received 10, 20, 40 or 60 krad of gamma radiation. Animals were vaccinated with 1000 or 2000 cercariae per kilogram of body weight. Overall the difference in worm burdens between the vaccinated and unvaccinated groups was highly significant (P greater than 0.01). The highest level of protection achieved was 44.4%. This was in monkeys which were immunized five times with 2000, 20-

Long-term infection of Schistosoma mansoni in a vervet monkey (Cercopithecus aethiops).

Schistosoma mansoni infection in Cercopithecus species monkeys has been previously monitored for up to five years. This is an account of observations made during an autopsy on a male vervet monkey which had harboured the parasite for 15 years. Viable eggs had been recovered from the faeces throughout the infection, being hatched to observe the emergence of miracidia. Apart from a nodular appearance of the liver capsule, which was noted before the perfusion, and localized haemorrhaging in the large bowel there was comparatively little pathology attributable to the parasite. 86 worms were recove

The diencephalon of the vervet monkey (Cercopithecus aethiops). Part I: thalamus and metathalamus.

The diencephalon of the vervet monkey (Cercopithecus aethiops) is described and compared with that of other primates, particularly the macaque monkey (Macaca mulatta). In the vervet monkey, the thalamus is divided into six nuclear groups: anterior, midline, medial, dorsolateral, ventrolateral and posterior. The anterior nuclear group shows a regressive nucleus anterodorsalis and a poorly defined demarcation between the nuclei anteromedialis and anteroventralis. There is a large interthalamic adhesion in which the ventral region containing nuclei centralis medialis, interventralis and reuniens,

Nitric oxide production in vervet monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops) infected with Trypanosoma brucei.

A retrospective study of nitrate concentration in serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from vervet monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops) infected with Trypanosoma brucei was undertaken. Serum nitrate was significantly elevated in parasitaemic animals. CSF nitrate detection correlated with the presence of parasites in the CNS. The results provide evidence for the production of nitric oxide (NO) in response to infection in a primate model of human African trypanosomiasis and provide the basis for the use of such a model in studies of the immunopathological effects of NO in human trypanosomiasis.

Experimental leprosy in African green monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops): a model for polyneuritic leprosy.

Three African green monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops) were inoculated intravenously and intracutaneously with Mycobacterium leprae derived from a naturally infected mangabey monkey. All developed cutaneous lesions at inoculation sites. One developed disseminated cutaneous lesions, while the cutaneous lesions in the other two regressed and eventually disappeared. The animals were examined at necropsy five years after inoculation. All three had active leprosy infection in peripheral nerves with extensive inflammation and fibrosis. The disease histologically resembled borderline-lepromatous lepros
