A 14-year-old girl with a rare form of fungal brain abscess involving the dura and brain parenchyma is reported. No portal of entry of the infection was found. Histological findings and fungal culture both indicated that the causative agent was Xylohypha bantiana, an uncommon dematiaceous fungus. A review of the literature suggests that this infection, which affects primarily young male patients, exhibits distinct neurotropism. Despite therapy, the prognosis is generally poor.

Multiple phaeohyphomycotic brain abscesses caused by Cladosporium species occurred in a 55 year old woman. No immunological abnormality could be detected. The disease ran a protracted course for a total of 20 months before she died from sudden rupture of an abscess loculus into the ventricular system. Course was characterised by spontaneous remissions and relapses totally independent of adequate doses and prolonged regimes of all the three available anti-fungal chemotherapeutic agents, namely amphotericin B, flucytosine and ketoconazole. Three surgical procedures were carried out; and surgical

Cerebral phaeohyphomycosis is a rare and frequently fatal disease. This disease is often caused by hematogenous spread of pathogens that are inoculated in the skin of the extremities after slight or minor trauma, and its mortality rate is rather high despite aggressive treatment. Our patient presented with headache and pyrexia. She was diagnosed with fungal meningitis and treated by systemic administration of voriconazole (VRCZ). However, after initial improvement, meningitis recurred. MRI of the brain showed multiple small masses in the cerebral hemisphere and she was thus referred to our Dep

Cerebral phaeohyphomycosis was diagnosed in a 9-year-old spayed dog that had a series of epileptic convulsions a day before death. About 6 weeks before her death, she had been treated for severe demodectic mange. During this period, persistent leukopenia, lymphocytopenia, and thrombocytopenia were found by blood analyses. At necropsy, multiple large pyogranulomatous lesions were found in the cerebrum and meninges. Dematiaceous fungi with brown, branching, septate hyphae and budding yeasts were found within tissue cells and in the necrotic areas.

We report a case of cerebral phaeohyphomycosis in a 53-year-old immunocompetent diabetic male, caused by Fonsecaea monophora. Computerized tomography of the brain revealed an abscess, which yielded F. monophora in pure culture. The patient's condition deteriorated on treatment with voriconazole and 5-fluorocytosine, and improved subsequently with high-dose itraconazole. The genus Fonsecaea has recently been revised and the new species F. monophora generated from molecular analysis of isolates, most of which were originally identified as Fonsecaea pedrosoi. This is the fourth case of cerebral i

A right-handed man in his early 60s with hypertension controlled by a single prescription medication presented with left-sided heaviness and intermittent right occipital headache. Initial diagnostic workup was unremarkable. CT revealed an enhancing lesion located in the right parietal lobe, with mild mass effect on the right occipital horn, indicative of a brain abscess. The patient was initially treated with a course of empirical antibiotics, including ceftriaxone, vancomycin, metronidazole and dexamethasone. The neurosurgery team aspirated the abscess the following day and extracted yellow p

Cerebral phaeohyphomycosis is a rare but serious fungal infection of the central nervous system caused by dematiaceous septate fungi characterized by the presence of melanin-like pigment within the cell wall that is a pale brown to black. It is associated with poor prognosis despite aggressive treatment. We report a previously well 3-year boy with cerebral phaeohyphomycosis who had subacute meningoencephalitic presentation with refractory raised intracranial pressure and had fatal outcomes. The diagnosis was confirmed by histopathological examination of brain tissue obtained by brain biopsy.

This report describes a rapidly fatal case of cerebral phaeohyphomycosis in a 33-year-old immunocompetent male. The infection presented as a single large lesion in the deep white matter of one temporal lobe, which was then removed surgically. Histologic features observed in the lobectomy specimen were characterized by perivascular sleeves of mononuclear cells accompanied by hemorrhages. These were reminiscent of acute hemorrhagic leukoencephalitis except for the presence of rare fungal organisms and sparse multinucleated giant cells similar to those occurring in AIDS. During the four days foll

BACKGROUND: Cerebral phaeohyphomycosis caused by Fonsecaea pedrosoi is a rarity. However, about four cases have been reported in the literature. The disease remains mostly fatal despite employment of new treatment modalities.
CASE: An 18-year-old boy presented seizures of recent onset. Two years back, he developed cutaneous phaeohyphomycosis after a splinter scratch on his chest wall. Imaging revealed a contrast enhancing parafalcian solid mass. Right frontal parasagittal craniotomy was performed and the lesion resected as much as possible, followed by IV amphotericin B and oral itraconazole

The term phaeohyphomycosis (PHM) means dark-pigmented fungal hyphae. Cerebral PHM (CPHM) with onychomycosis is extremely rare; very few have been reported so far. The authors report a case of CPHM with onychomycosis in a 37-year-old male from a rural background in Haryana, India, with involvement of the left frontal lobe. The mass was resected and biopsy was sent for histopathological examination. He was given antifungal drugs in the postoperative period. The patient responded very well to the treatment, and there were no signs of recurrence at the 6-month follow-up visit. The clinical feature

Phaeohyphomycosis is an uncommon disorder caused by a variety of saprophytic fungi having distinctive morphologic features. Central nervous system infection typically occurs in the absence of predisposing factors and usually manifest symptoms and signs of abscess formation. We describe an otherwise healthy young man whose presentation with cerebral phaeohyphomycosis was subacute meningitis and stroke. Neuroimaging studies revealed multiple parenchymal lesions having the characteristics of recent infarcts; several vascular territories were involved. The nature of these lesions was confirmed his

Mycotic meningoencephalitis in dogs may manifest as a primary disease of the central nervous system or as a part of disseminated infection. Fungi belonging to the genus Bipolaris are saprophytic plant pathogens and can cause disease in humans. The authors report a case of Bipolaris infection in a dog with granulomatous meningoencephalitis, nephritis, and vasculitis. The clinical and histological features resembled those of the more common aspergillosis, thus warranting confirmation by molecular methods. Polymerase chain reaction and sequence analysis identified Bipolaris from the brain lesion,

A 76-year-old male with chief complaints of back and right leg sciatica was hospitalized. His abdominal CT scan revealed lumber spondylitic stenosis. A laminectomy was performed. Postoperatively, he became febrile, aphasic and had grand mal seizure. A left craniotomy of the front abscess, seen in the CT scan, was performed. H and E stained smears of drainage revealed dematiaceous, septate hyphae. Cultures of the abscess drainage grew an olivaceous-grey fungus. Based on macro- and micro-morphological characters, growth at 42 degrees C, and exoantigenic analysis, the patient's fungus was identif

INTRODUCTION: Rhino-orbital-cerebral mycoses are caused by different type of fungus. Mucormycosis is frequently an acute, aggressive opportunistic infection associated with high morbidity and mortality, in immunocompromised patients. In contrast, some Phaeohyphomycosis such as Drechslera hawaiiensis can affect young, immunocompetent patients. In Mexico, the high prevalence of poorly controlled diabetes mellitus, and limited access to specialized healthcare, constitute risk factors for mucormycosis.
METHODS: It was a retrospective study made up by a series of cases which are presented. All rhi

Cerebral phaeohyphomycosis (CP) is a rare but a highly morbid fungal infection of the central nervous system caused by the fungi belonging to the order Chaetothyriales, which includes Cladophialophora bantiana, Exophiala dermatitidis, Rhinocladiella mackenziei (RM) etc. This disease is associated with poor clinical outcomes, with reported mortality of over 80%. We present the case of a 65-year gentleman who developed CP secondary to RM infection following COVID-19 and the associated challenges in his medical and surgical management.

Curvularia infections in humans are relatively uncommon despite the ubiquitous presence of this soil-dwelling dematiaceous fungus in the environment. Originally thought to be solely a pathogen of plants, Curvularia has been described as a pathogen of humans and animals in the last half-century, causing respiratory tract, cutaneous, and corneal infections. Only three previous cases of central nervous system involvement by Curvularia have been documented in the medical literature. We report a fatal case of cerebral Curvularia infection in which there was no known history of immunocompromise or p

In this report we describe a case of cerebral phaeohyphomycosis involving a 56-year-old Egyptian male who worked as a mason in Kuwait for 6 years. Computerized tomography scan of the brain revealed presence of a large abscess in the left occipital lobe. Aspirated pus from the abscess showed branched, septate, hyphae with light brown pigmentation. Cultured pus grew the fungus Ramichloridium mackenziei. Despite amphotericin B (1 mg kg(-1) per day) therapy for 2 weeks, the patient expired. The isolate was later found to be resistant to amphotericin B ( > 32 microg ml(-1)). Antifungal susceptibili

Cerebral phaeohyphomycosis, caused by Cladophialophora bantiana, was diagnosed in a Huacaya alpaca (Vicugna pacos). An 8-year-old, intact male Huacaya alpaca from a farm in Indiana was found dead at pasture and submitted to the Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory at Purdue University for necropsy examination. Gross lesions were limited to the cerebrum, which had a 2×2.5×5 cm, well-demarcated, firm, mottled, pale grey to brown-red mass with a granular texture, centered on the left and right cingulate gyri. Microscopically, granulomatous and necrotizing meningoencephalitis with intralesional pi
