Thrombosis of cerebral veins dural sinuses after paratyphi.

A 20 year old woman was admitted to our Department 15 days after the onset of typhoid fever treated with chloramphenicol. The patient showed intracranial hypertension with generalized seizures, slight right hemiparesis and a left VI cranial nerve deficit with diplopia. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) showed occlusion of the superior longitudinal, right transverse, right sigmoid sinus combined with a single hemorrhagic infarct in the left occipito-parietal area. Serum tests were positive for Salmonella Paratyphi A and B. The results of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) examination were normal and bloo

[Thrombosis of the cerebral veins in gynecological practice].

The review presents literature data on the risk factors of cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT), a rare life threatening disorder. Currently, the diagnosis of CVT is made more often due to the possibility of using neuroimaging methods of cerebral structures. Pregnancy, postpartum period, use of oral contraceptives are risk factors of CVT. A role of thrombophilia, in particular Factor V Leiden mutations and the prothrombin G20210A polymorphism, in the CVT pathogenesis is confirmed. The development of CVT is an example of the interaction between persistent risk factors increasing the likelihood of t

Negative BOLD-fMRI signals in large cerebral veins.

Reductions in blood oxygenation level dependent (BOLD)-functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) signals below baseline levels have been observed under several conditions as negative activation in task-activation studies or anticorrelation in resting-state experiments. Converging evidence suggests that negative BOLD signals (NBSs) can generally be explained by local reductions in neural activity. Here, we report on NBSs that accompany hemodynamic changes in regions devoid of neural tissue. The NBSs were investigated with high-resolution studies of the visual cortex (VC) at 7 T. Task-activat

Detection of ruptured cerebral bridging veins at autopsy.

Subdural hematomas (SDH) are a frequent autopsy finding in victims of closed head injuries. About 2/3 of the cases in our own massive SDH series had brain contusions as a cause of bleeding. In about 1/3 of the cases, SDH resulted from ruptured vessels of the brain surface in the absence of contusions. Our experience has shown that such an "isolated" SDH may be expected in about 5% of fatal blunt head injuries. A technique is presented to detect bridging vein leakage before there is any risk of artificial damage. After sawing through the skull in the fronto-occipital plane and cutting through t

Cerebral vein thrombosis.

The estimated annual incidence of cerebral vein thrombosis (CVT) is 3 to 4 cases per million in adults and 7 cases per million in neonates. Among the commonest risk factors there are oral contraceptive use, pregnancy and puerperium that make CVT more frequent in women than in men. Cerebral tumors, infections and traumas are less encountered local risk factors. In 15-20% of patients CVT remains unprovoked. Coagulation abnormalities causing thrombophilia, as well as hyperhomocysteinemia, are worthy to be investigated in patients with CVT. Rarely CVT can be the first clinical manifestation of a m

The clinical significance of cerebral veins in moyamoya disease.

A total of 11 patients with Moyamoya disease who underwent digital subtraction angiography were studied with respect to the cerebral venous system. First, delayed venous filling and the divisional change of the superficial cerebral veins have been attributed to the development of collateral pathways in Moyamoya disease and may be reflective appearances for the pathophysiological conditions in Moyamoya disease. Particularly, delayed venous filling may be an important finding which predicts an ischemic attack. Secondarily, the inferior striate veins were frequently detected in proportion to the

The preservation and reconstruction of cerebral veins and sinuses.

Although cerebral veins and venous sinuses are very important to the neurosurgeon, they have received adequate attention only recently. The consequences of cerebral venous occlusion are well known. When the venous outflow is compromised due to a lack of adequate collateral circulation, venous infarction follows, with swelling, haemorrhage and neuronal death. The clinical consequences will depend upon the region of involvement of the brain and the site of the infarcted tissue. The symptoms may include seizures, hemiplegia, aphasia, coma and death. Similarly, the consequences of cerebral venous

[Determination of Doppler parameters in the study of basal cerebral veins: basal vein of Rosenthal and middle cerebral vein].

INTRODUCTION: To date, little attention has been paid to the study of the venous system by means of transcranial Doppler ultrasound. The objective of our study was to learn how to localize cerebral blood flow and find the normal values of different ultrasonographic parameters. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We studied 20 healthy persons in whom the arterial system of the circle of Willis had previously been shown to be normal. Transcranial Doppler scan was done with the person lying face upwards, using a transtemporal 2 MHz catheter. In the study we included persons in whom at least one of the two vei

Prominent cerebral veins on susceptibility-weighted angiography in acute meningoencephalitis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: We have commonly observed prominent cerebral veins on susceptibility-weighted angiography (SWAN) in acute meningoencephalitis. This study aimed to investigate the clinical significance of these findings. METHODS: Cerebral veins on SWAN of 98 patients with acute meningoencephalitis diagnosed from February 2016 through October 2020 were classified into three groups according to the degree of venous prominence (mild, 23; moderate, 53; and prominent, 22). Clinical variables and laboratory findings were compared between these groups. The influence of variables on the predic

Calcifications of cerebral medullary veins associated with carotid-jugular fistula.

Unusual calcification of the cerebral medullary veins is noted in a 34-year-old mentally retarded female who had a right carotid-jugular anastomosis 30 years earlier. The patient was hospitalized because of a right neck mass, proptosis, and the recent onset of left flaccid hemiplegia. Arch aortography and CT of the head and neck were performed. Surgery to oblate the fistula provided dramatic relief of venous engorgement in the orbits and face. The finding of medullary vein calcification is emphasized because it is a hitherto unreported entity.

Postpartum cerebral vein thrombosis.

Pregnancy increases the risk of cerebrovascular accidents to approximately 13 times the expected rate. Most of the cerebrovascular accidents are due to cerebral venous thrombosis. Headache, seizures and focal neurological deficits are some of the symptoms of cerebral venous thrombosis. Headache can also be due to postural puncture, pre eclampsia and eclampsia in the postpartum period. Neuroimaging with MRI with contrast helps in the diagnosis of cerebral venous thrombosis and giving a definite diagnosis, which aids in the treatment and prognosis. The cases presented in this report highlight th

Hyperhomocysteinemia in cerebral vein thrombosis.

High plasma levels of total homocysteine (tHcy) are a risk factor for deep vein thrombosis. Because no information on the relationship between cerebral vein thrombosis and hyperhomocysteinemia is available, a case-control study of 121 patients with a first episode of cerebral vein thrombosis and 242 healthy control subjects was carried out. Fasting plasma levels of tHcy and their postmethionine load (PML) increments, together with other laboratory markers of thrombophilia, were measured in plasma or DNA. Hyperhomocysteinemia (high fasting tHcy and/or PML increments) was diagnosed in 33 patient

Representation of cerebral bridging veins in infants by postmortem computed tomography.

The postmortem diagnosis of shaken baby syndrome, a severe form of child abuse, may be difficult, especially when no other visible signs of significant trauma are obvious. An important finding in shaken baby syndrome is subdural haemorrhage, typically originating from ruptured cerebral bridging veins. Since these are difficult to detect at autopsy, we have developed a special postmortem computed tomographic (PMCT) method to demonstrate the intracranial vein system in infants. This method is minimally invasive and can be carried out conveniently and quickly on clinical computed tomography (CT)

Involvement of cerebral medullary veins in infants and newborns: Imaging findings.

Cerebral medullary veins are involved in a wide range of pathologies affecting the central nervous system during childhood. The aim of this article is to provide an anatomical overview of the cerebral venous system and to review the main conditions affecting the medullary veins in this age group, outlining their pathophysiology and the characteristic imaging findings across different imaging modalities. Vascular causes are the most common, but medullary vein involvement can also be seen in hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy, malformative syndromes, and inflammatory or infectious diseases.

An investigation of cerebral bridging veins rupture due to head trauma.

Subdural hematoma (SDH) is common abnormality that is caused by the rupture of cerebral bridge veins (BVs). It occurs in more than 30% of severe head injuries. The purpose of this research was to develop a numerical model to examine the effects of brain atrophy and age on the rupture of bridging veins in subdural hematoma. Three types of models were developed to simulate subdural hematoma, namely global solid, global FSI, and local solid models. In the next step, a head impact with the head injury criterion (HIC) value of 744 was applied as a loading condition to global models. For the global
