Assessing American Indian Traditional Ceremonial Practices and Substance Use Behaviors in an Urban, Multi-Tribal Setting: Results from a Community Survey.

American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities have relied on traditional ceremonial practices (TCPs) for survival and resilience for generations. Research examining the role of TCPs on wellness in urban, multi-tribal communities, however, has only recently emerged over the last several decades. This study explored the association between TCP-related variables and substance use in an urban AI/AN community in Montana. Specifically, participant knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs (KAB) regarding TCPs, their level of intent to participate in TCPs, and past year substance use were measured. T

Ayahuasca ceremony leaders' perspectives on special considerations for eating disorders.

Eating disorders (EDs) are difficult conditions to resolve, necessitating novel treatments. Ayahuasca, a psychedelic plant medicine originating in Indigenous Amazonian communities, is being investigated. Aspects of ceremonial ayahuasca use (purging, dietary restrictions) appear similar to ED behaviors, raising questions about ayahuasca's suitability as an intervention for individuals with EDs. This study explored the perspectives of ayahuasca ceremony leaders on these and other considerations for ceremonial ayahuasca drinking among individuals with EDs. A qualitative content analysis of interv

The unwritten history of medical treatment: Evidence for ritual-healers and their activities in the pre-literate past.

OBJECTIVE: To reveal the presence and activities of healers from funerary contexts. MATERIALS: Ethnohistoric and ethnographic textual descriptions and the bioarchaeological record. METHODS: A synthesis of human remains, grave contexts, and funerary objects. CONCLUSIONS: The capacity to act as a "healer" forms part of the social identity of a diverse range of uniquely specialized individuals cross-culturally who also perform a variety of other roles associated with transcendent ideologies, beliefs, and religion. They are ambivalent, capable of doing both good and ill. They defend the health

Decreases in State and Trait Anxiety Post-psilocybin: A Naturalistic, Observational Study Among Retreat Attendees.

Anxiety disorders are the most common type of psychiatric disorders among Western countries. Evidence-based treatment modalities including pharmacological and cognitive-behavioral therapy result in deficient treatment responses. Historical and recent research suggests psychedelic drugs may be efficacious in alleviating anxiety-related symptoms among healthy and clinical populations. The main aim of the present study was investigation of the effects of psilocybin-containing truffles, when taken in a supportive group setting, on ratings of state and trait anxiety across self-reported healthy vol

From Ritual to Screen: Documenting Tabuik as Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Intangible cultural heritage (ICH) plays a crucial role in sustaining cultural identity, collective memory, and social continuity; however, existing studies have predominantly focused on preservation efforts and heritage policies, with limited attention to how documentation itself contributes to the construction of cultural meaning. This study examines the documentation of the Tabuik tradition in Pariaman, West Sumatra, as a process of cultural representation and meaning-making. Employing a qualitative autoethnographic approach, data were collected through participant observation, interactions

Impact of the Coming-of-Age Day and ceremony on the risk of SARS-CoV-2 transmission in Japan: A natural-experimental study based on national surveillance data.

BACKGROUND: Quantifying the impact on COVID-19 transmission from a single event has been difficult due to the virus transmission dynamics, such as lag from exposure to reported infection, non-linearity arising from the person-to-person transmission, and the modifying effects of non-pharmaceutical interventions over time. To address these issues, we aimed to estimate the COVID-19 transmission risk of social events focusing on the Japanese Coming-of-Age Day and Coming-of-Age ceremony in which "new adults" practice risky behavior on that particular day. METHODS: Using national surveillance data

Female genital mutilation and cutting: An anatomical review and alternative rites.

The World Health Organization reports that more than 200 million women currently alive have been subjected to female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) worldwide, and three million girls continue to be at risk each year. FGM/C today is women's business. The vulva is formed by the labia majora and the vestibule, with its erectile apparatus. These structures are located under the urogenital diaphragm, behind the pubic symphysis in the anterior perineal region. The clitoris is entirely an external genital organ: the glans and body covered by the prepuce are visible/free while the roots are hidden

[Sacred psychoactive seeds and ritual sacrifices in the Moche culture].

INTRODUCTION: Archaeological findings have confirmed the existence of representations of ritual human sacrifices on pottery belonging to the Moche culture (100-750 AD) in northern Peru; until recently these images were thought to be mythological narrations. We review the archaeological and ethno-historical data concerning Moche sacrifices and we attempt to identify the psychoactive seeds and plants used during such rites. DEVELOPMENT: Ethno-historical data from different chronicles of the New World written in the 16th century state that hamala seeds (belonging to the species Nectandra) were u

Grief, mourning, and the body: Ritual attention to the death of victims of the dictatorship in Chile.

This study considers the way in which the recovery of the bodies of those who were detained and disappeared under the Pinochet dictatorship not only enables the social recognition of their deaths and the performance of death rituals hitherto obstructed, but also makes it possible to "attend to" their deaths in multiple dimensions. The research draws upon testimonies and records collected during fieldwork for an ongoing anthropological investigation. We observe the different practices that can be associated with the process of "dignification," including the physical demonstrations of affection

Rituals, stereotypy and compulsive behavior in animals and humans.

From a survey of the behavior of animals in the wild, in captivity, under the influence of psychoactive drugs and in a model of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), we identify that the behavioral repertoire invariably includes motor rituals, and that such rituals are performed at a few specific locations/objects in the environment with an orderly transition amongst locations/objects. The concept and parameters of this stable organization of rituals in time and space were used to analyze rituals of OCD patients, compared with control individuals performing the same actions (e.g. car locking).

A Fragmented Mind: Altered States of Consciousness and Spirit Possession Between Rituals and Therapy.

This paper focuses on understanding how cultural influences, social expectancy, and personal beliefs shape the perception of altered states of consciousness and how these mental states have been interpreted as a way to communicate with the spiritual world. Altered states of consciousness are commonly encountered in religious, spiritual, and therapeutic (e.g., hypnosis) practices. While neurophysiological aspects of altered states of consciousness are an important part of understanding the nature of human consciousness, the cultural meaning that these states of mind assume in different communit

First results from the mustatils of the Harrat Khaybar: New insights into neolithic cult in Northwest Saudi Arabia.

In 2023, the University of Sydney, in partnership with the Heritage Commission undertook research at a large mustatil site to the southeast of Al-Thamad on the Harrat Khaybar, Saudi Arabia. This site is marked by a concentration of 28 mustatils, as well as a series of other monumental stone-built features, dating from the Neolithic onwards. These are the first mustatils to be investigated on the Harrat Khaybar, where more than 400 have been identified. During fieldwork, all mustatils at the site were documented, with test excavations conducted in three structures. Dateable surface material was

Ritual to relief: ethical frontiers in repurposing psychoactive substances.

Psychoactive substances, known for their acute impact on perception and cognition, are gaining attention for their potential therapeutic applications. Many of these substances are plant-derived with deep-rooted histories of use in non-medical contexts, where they have been viewed as either tools for social cohesion or sources of discord, depending on cultural and societal contexts. This review explores psychoactive substances; psychedelics, cannabis, and stimulants, in a legitimized medical context, focusing on the ethical considerations shaping research and the regulatory and prescribing chal

Rediscovering the ritual technology of the placebo effect in analytical psychology.

Technology, viewed more generally, is a collection of skills and methods that are used to accomplish an objective of some kind. Modernity has produced many kinds of ever-expanding new technologies, but it is also evident that technologies can be lost or fall out of use. A cross-cultural survey of ritual reveals a rather startling observation: that while developed nations often exceed other cultures in terms of material technology, they often pale by comparison in their use of ritual technology. In this essay we will see how ritual is a powerful sort of technology that developed nations have mo

The greeting behavior of fragile X males.

Mentally retarded males with a fragile site on the X chromosome (Xq27) were observed to exhibit a highly idiosyncratic but well-coordinated, stereotypic form of gaze avoidance during greeting ceremonies that involved the whole upper body. A comparison group of persons with other etiologically defined syndromes of mental retardation did not. Results suggest that the aberrant greeting behavior may be uniquely associated with one syndrome of mental retardation with a defined genetic etiology. The behavior pattern does not appear until middle childhood, however, and its developmental induction rem

The cognitive roles of behavioral variability: idiosyncratic acts as the foundation of identity and as transitional, preparatory, and confirmatory phases.

Behavior in obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), in habitual daily tasks, and in sport and cultural rituals is deconstructed into elemental acts and categorized into common acts, performed by all individuals completing a similar task, and idiosyncratic acts, not performed by all individuals. Never skipped, common acts establish the pragmatic part of motor tasks. Repetitive performance of a few common acts renders rituals a rigid form, whereby common acts may serve as memes for cultural transmission. While idiosyncratic acts are not pragmatically necessary for task completion, they fulfill impo
