Allergic conjunctivitis to chamomile tea.

Eye washing with chamomile tea is a folk remedy used by the general public to treat conjunctivitis and other ocular reactions. Chamomile is also found in many cosmetic products. Some cases of contact dermatitis (but not reactions of type I) were reported following its topical applications. We present seven hay fever patients that suffered from conjunctivitis; two of them also had lid angioedema after eye washing with chamomile tea. All seven patients had positive skin prick tests to the chamomile tea extract, Matricaria chamomilla pollen and Artemisia vulgaris pollen extracts. Positive conjunc

[Evidence of dermatological effects of chamomile].

Recent years have seen a rise in the demand for dermatological herbal and plant products as well as products containing chamomile. Extracts and decoctions made from this plant are often recommended by laymen for treatment of a number of skin diseases e.g. inflammation, wounds and itching. This systematic review explores the evidence base of the dermatological effects of chamomile. While numerous beneficial effects of chamomile have been suggested no studies have so far been able to substantiate these claims significantly. The absence of evidence is primarily caused by the design and quality of

Guaianolides and volatile compounds in chamomile tea.

Chamomile (German Chamomile, Matricaria recutita L., Asteraceae) is one of the most popular medicinal plants in use as an herbal tea for food purposes and in folk medicine. Qualitative and semi-quantitative analyses of the volatile fraction of chamomile herbal tea were performed. Volatile constituents of the infusion were isolated by two different methods, namely hydrodistillation and solid phase extraction (SPE), and analysed by GC-MS. The relative proportions of particular chemical classes, present in the essential oil and volatile fractions of the infusion showed remarkable differences. The

Reevaluating the safety of chamomile poultices in ophthalmic care.

INTRODUCTION: German chamomile [Matricaria recutita L. (Asteraceae)] tea poultices are a common folk remedy in Central and Eastern Europe for treating eye inflammations such as blepharitis and conjunctivitis. This practice often precedes medical consultation and professional advice. Surprisingly, some healthcare professionals, including pharmacists, naturopaths, general practitioners, and pediatricians, recommend it as a primary treatment, particularly among the elderly. However, the ophthalmic use of chamomile lacks scientific validation, and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and ophthalmic

Nitrate deficiency reduces cadmium and nickel accumulation in chamomile plants.

The effect of nitrogen (nitrate) deficiency (-N) on the accumulation of cadmium (Cd) and nickel (Ni) in chamomile ( Matricaria chamomilla ) plants was studied. Elimination of N from the culture medium led to decreases in N-based compounds (free amino acids and soluble proteins) and increases in C-based compounds (reducing sugars, soluble phenols, coumarins, phenolic acids, and partially flavonoids and lignin), being considerably affected by the metal presence. Proline, a known stress-protective amino acid, decreased in all -N variants. The activity of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase was stimulated

Clinical cross-reactivity between Artemisia vulgaris and Matricaria chamomilla (chamomile).

Artemisia vulgaris is a common weed and an important source of allergens on the subtropical island of Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain. It pollinates mainly from July to September, although, due to some local climatic conditions, it may flower throughout the year. Cross-reactivity with hazelnut, kiwi, birch, several Compositae (Ambrosia, Chrysanthemum, Matricaria, Solidago) and grass allergens has been suggested. Few studies have addressed the issue of in vivo cross-reactivity between A. vulgaris and Matricaria chamomilla. The objective of this study was to perform conjunctival and bronchial ch

Psychopharmacological profile of Chamomile (Matricaria recutita L.) essential oil in mice.

In this study, the effect of Matricaria recutita L. essential oil (MEO) on the central nervous system (CNS) of mice was investigated using some behavioral methods. Chemical profiling both by GC and GC-MS analyses of the hydrodistilled essential oil of M. recutita revealed α-bisabolol oxide A (28%), α-bisabolol oxide B (17.1%), (Z)-β-Farnesene (15.9%) and α-bisabolol (6.8%) as the main components. Changes induced by MEO (25, 50 and 100 mg/kg) and reference drug caffeine (25 mg/kg) in spontaneous locomotor activities and motor coordinations of mice were investigated by activity cage measurements

Antimicrobial effect of chamomile-containing over-the-counter ear and eye drops.

Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) is a plant with known antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic properties. Homeopathic drops containing chamomile extract are often used for ear pain and chronic ear infections. We aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial effect of over-the-counter eardrops containing chamomile against organisms causing bacterial conjunctivitis and otitis externa. Liquid cultures of Streptococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were exposed to increasing concentrations of eardrops containing chamomile extract. Liquid cultures of S. aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae were

Evidence Supports Tradition: The in Vitro Effects of Roman Chamomile on Smooth Muscles.

The dried flowers of Chamaemelum nobile (L.) All. have been used in traditional medicine for different conditions related to the spasm of the gastrointestinal system. However, there have been no experimental studies to support the smooth muscle relaxant effect of this plant. The aim of our research was to assess the effects of the hydroethanolic extract of Roman chamomile, its fractions, four of its flavonoids (apigenin, luteolin, hispidulin, and eupafolin), and its essential oil on smooth muscles. The phytochemical compositions of the extract and its fractions were characterized and quantifie

The Efficacy and Safety of Using Chamomile Products During Pregnancy and the Postpartum Period.

Herbal remedies have been a mainstay of medicine for thousands of years. This systematic literature review investigated the efficacy and safety of chamomile herbal products among peripartum or postpartum women. Four peer-reviewed databases were searched through June 2024. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) protocol was implemented, and the quality of studies was assessed using Cochrane Risk-of-Bias Assessment tools. A total of 23 studies (16 clinical trials and seven observational studies involving 2,065 women from nine countries) were included in t
