Asprosin regulates male reproduction in teleosts: an in vitro study in Channa punctata.

The novel adipokine asprosin, produced by the furin enzymatic cleavage of profibrillin 1 protein (encoded by the Fbn1 gene), is implicated in regulating many physiological functions, including reproduction in mammals. In males, asprosin is reported to increase sperm density, sperm motility, and steroid production by interacting with Olfr734, which belongs to the G-protein-coupled receptor family (GPCR). In 2023, our group predicted and characterized asprosin in silico for the first time and demonstrated the robust expression of fbn1, and furin in the gonads of teleost spotted snakehead (ss) Ch

Asprosin modulates female reproductive functions in teleosts: An in vitro study in Channa punctata.

Asprosin regulates various aspects of physiology in mammals including reproduction. It is reported to profoundly affect both male and female reproductive functions including gametogenesis and steroidogenesis. Asprosin is the cleaved product of a profibrillin protein encoded by the fbn1 gene. For the first time in non-mammalian vertebrates, our group demonstrated the ubiquitous expression of fbn1 and characterized asprosin protein in silico in teleost Channa punctata commonly known as spotted snakehead (ss). Based on the prominent expression of the fbn1 gene and the reproductive phase-dependent

Deciphering the impact of endoparasitic infection on immune response and gut microbial composition of Channa punctata.

Intestinal parasitic infections caused by helminths are globally distributed and are a major cause of morbidity worldwide. Parasites may modulate the virulence, gut microbiota diversity and host responses during infection. Despite numerous works, little is known about the complex interaction between parasites and the gut microbiota. In the present study, the complex interplay between parasites and the gut microbiota was investigated. A total of 12 bacterial strains across four major families, including Enterobacteriaceae, Morganellaceae, Flavobacteriaceae, and Pseudomonadaceae, were isolated f

Evaluation of genotoxic potential of chromium (VI) in Channa punctata fish in terms of chromosomal aberrations.

Chromium, a widely recognized carcinogenic, mutagenic and redox active metal, is released into aquatic environments by electroplating, tannery and textile industries. Elevated concentrations in sediments and interstitial waters are well documented. Fishes dwelling in chromium waste infested waters are presumed to be affected by its deposits. To evaluate the genotoxic potential of chromium [Cr(VI)] on aquatic bio-system, bottom feeding fishes, Channa punctata, as model fish, were exposed to [Cr(VI)]. The chromosomal aberration test (CAT) was used as biomarker of [Cr(VI)] induced toxicity. The f

Life history of Genarchopsis goppo Ozaki, 1925 (Trematoda: Hemiuridae) from the freshwater fish Channa punctata.

The life cycle of Genarchopsis goppo a hemiurid trematode found in the stomach of Channa punctata has been worked out in detail. The egg contains a fully developed miracidium at the time of liberation. The miracidium contains a ciliated covering, a long apical gland and a crown of spines at the anterior end. The snail Amnicola travancorica acts as the first intermediate hose inside which the miracidium passes through sporocyst and redial generations. The cercaria is of cystophorous type and is identical to Cercariae Indicae Sewell XXXV. Metacercaria occurs in the ostracods Stenocypris malcolms

Oxidative stress, inflammation, and steatosis elucidate the complex dynamics of HgCl2 induced liver damage in Channa punctata.

Water bodies are highly pollution-prone areas in which mercury (Hg) is considered as a major menace to aquatic organisms. However, the information about the toxicity of mercuric chloride (HgCl2) in a vital organ such as the liver of fish is still inadequate. This study aimed to assess the impact of mercuric chloride (HgCl2) exposure on the liver of Channa punctata fish over 15, 30, and 45 days, at two different concentrations (0.039 mg/L and 0.078 mg/L). Mercury is known to be a significant threat to aquatic life, and yet, information regarding its effects on fish liver remains limited. The re

Molecular and functional characterization of asprosin receptor, protein tyrosine phosphatase receptor delta (ptprd) in gonads of Channa punctata.

In non-mammalian vertebrates, asprosin was reported for first time in teleost Channa punctata in 2023. The hormone is conspicuously expressed in gonads and exhibits reproductive-phase related differential expression. Recombinant asprosin modulated reproductive functions of C. punctata. However, receptor for asprosin in teleosts remains obscure. Interestingly, we observed a prominent expression of one of the asprosin receptor, protein tyrosine phosphatase receptor delta (ptprd) in gonads of C. punctata. Reproductive phase-dependent expression of ptprd in the gonads showed highest expression dur

In vitro free radical scavenging activity of hepatic metallothionein induced in an Indian freshwater fish, Channa punctata Bloch.

Mammalian metallothioneins (MT) have been reported to scavenge free radicals. There is no experimental evidence to show that fish MT has a similar property. In the present study cadmium-induced MT (Cd-MT) from the liver of an Indian freshwater fish Channa punctata Bloch was investigated for its free radical scavenging activity using three different in vitro assays. Exposure to cadmium chloride (0.2 mg/kg body weight; three doses on alternate days) resulted in a marked induction of Cd-MT in liver. Only a single isoform of Cd-MT was found to be induced. Molecular weight of Cd-MT was found to be

Effects of exposure to multiple trace metals on biochemical, histological and ultrastructural features of gills of a freshwater fish, Channa punctata Bloch.

The trace metals are frequently encountered as mixtures of essential and non-essential elements. Therefore, evaluation of their toxic effects individually does not offer a realistic estimate of their impact on biological processes. We studied effects of a mixture of four essential and toxic metals (Cu, Cd, Fe and Ni) on biochemical and morphological characteristics of the gills of a biomarker freshwater fish Channa punctata (Bloch) using environmentally relevant concentrations. Fish were exposed to metal mixture through tank water for 7, 15 and 30 days. Biochemical studies as well as light mic
