Taxonomic revision of the genus Anostomoides (Characiformes: Anostomidae).

A taxonomic revision of Anostomoides is herein presented based on a comprehensive revision of specimens deposited in fish collections and the literature. The present revision proposes that A. laticeps is a junior synonym of A. atrianalis, while A. passionis is a junior synonym of Leporinus nattereri, and the latter is thus transferred to Anostomoides, forming the new combination Anostomoides nattereri. Principal Components Analysis (PCA) showed that examined specimens form two distinct morphotypes, corroborating the validity of both A. atrianalis and A. nattereri. Anostomoides nattereri is dis

On a remarkable sexual dimorphic trait in the Characiformes related to the olfactory organ and description of a new miniature species of Tyttobrycon Géry (Characiformes: Characidae).

Among the order Characiformes, secondary sexual dimorphism is commonly associated to the occurrence of bony hooks on fins, shape and length of the dorsal and anal fins, and sexual dichromatism. The analysis of a new miniature Characidae species of the genus Tyttobrycon, described herein, yielded to the discovery of a sexually dimorphic trait related to nostril aperture and number of olfactory lamellae. In this type of dimorphism, mature males present larger nostril aperture and higher number of olfactory lamella than females. A dimorphic olfactory organ is for the first time recorded and descr

Dry Season Feeding Profiles of a Characiformes Assemblage in a Brazilian Tropical Stream.

Trophic interactions between fish and their resources depends on resource availability and interspecific competition. To understand dry-season trophic profiles of a speciose Characiformes assemblage, we performed stomach content analysis to describe diet and determine levels of niche partitioning and morphological adaptations among eight Characiformes species in the dry season in Mata de Itamacaoca, Chapadinha Municipality, State of Maranhão, northeastern Brazil. Insectivory dominated most diets, with Astyanax cf. bimaculatus and Characidium cf. bimaculatum exhibiting the broadest niches. Spec

Tooth morphology, implantation and replacement system of Hoplias malabaricus (Teleostei, Characiformes, Erythrinidae).

The oropharyngeal cavity of Hoplias malabaricus, an ichthyophagous freshwater fish, is anatomically adapted to predation. Macroscopic and microscopic analyses were conducted in order to study the morphology and system of implantation and replacement of teeth. The results showed that this teleost has conical and caniniform teeth, with an orthodentin crown covered by an enameloid cap and a vascularised orthodentin in the root. With regard to the implantation system, there is a junction between the tooth and the bone tissue, as a typical physiological dental ankylosis. The teeth are replaced by a

Ecological Filtering Shapes Morphological Diversity Across Flow Regimes in Neotropical Characiforms.

Colonizing novel habitats can increase ecological opportunity, promoting rapid phenotypic evolution as species adapt to new niches. However, colonization of a novel habitat can limit phenotypic diversity without changing the rate of evolution if the transition is recent and ecological filtering favors only a few highly adaptive phenotypes. We examine body shape diversity in Neotropical characiforms across flow regimes using linear morphometrics integrated with phylogenetic comparative methods, including disparity metrics, ancestral state reconstructions, and evolutionary model fitting, to expl

Chromosomal evidence of downstream dispersal of Astyanax fasciatus (Characiformes, Characidae) associated with river shed interconnection.

In the 1960s, as a part of the construction of the Furnas Hydroelectric Power Dam, Minas Gerais, Brazil, the Rio Piumhi was diverted from the Rio Grande drainage to the São Francisco River basin, with the resulting introduction of species from one basin to the other. Chromosomal characteristics of various populations of Astyanax fasciatus sensu Eigenmann from the transect region were studied using cytogenetic techniques, with the goal to identify and map the dispersal of invasive species in the Rio São Francisco. Populations of the Rio Grande and Rio Piumhi are distinct from those of the São F

Integrative study of the reproductive biology and growth of Acestrorhynchus pantaneiro Menezes, 1992 (Characiformes, Acestrorhynchidae).

We studied the reproductive strategy, sexual system and growth of dientudo paraguayo Acestrorhynchus pantaneiro. After 2 years of monitoring in shallow areas of a floodplain lake from the lower Paraná basin (Argentina), it was evidenced that water temperature modulated gonadal maturation, but it was the river water level the synchronising stimulus that triggered spawning. This species exhibited a single annual breeding period from October to January, with most spawning activity in November. According to the von Bertalanffy growth curve, fish would reach autumn to winter months with LS of ~120

Electrophysiological responses in Amazonian fish species Bryconops caudomaculatus (Osteichthyes: Characiformes) as biomarkers of xenobiotic toxicity.

Sublethal exposures to environmental pollutants may cause changes in physiological parameters. Thus, knowledge of basal physiological rates of the species and the development of methods to quantify these rates are extremely important. Considering the scarcity of cardiac and muscle physiological studies in native Amazonian fish species and that no evaluation of electrophysiological responses by exposure to a stressor has been reported in Bryconops caudomaculatus, the aim of this study was to develop techniques of electromyographic and electrocardiographic recordings of normal responses, during

Morphological and histochemical characterisation of the mucosa of the digestive tract in matrinxã Brycon amazonicus (Teleostei: Characiformes).

This study describes anatomical, histological and histochemical features of the digestive tract mucosal layer of the matrinxã Brycon amazonicus, an omnivorous freshwater fish endemic from the Amazon basin. This species presents short thick oesophagus with longitudinal folds, that allow the passage of large food items. The mucosa is lined with a stratified secretory epithelium rich in goblet cells that secrete neutral and acid mucins. The two mucin types provide different viscosity in anterior and posterior oesophagus related to the protective and lubricant functions, respectively. The stomach
