INTRODUCTION: Charles Bonnet syndrome (CBS) is a condition that causes visual hallucinations in patients without any mental illnesses. CBS is characterized by the presence of vivid, complex and recurrent visual hallucinations, and do not occur in the setting or as part of delirium or other psychological illnesses. The condition is present in patients who have visual loss due to age-related macular degeneration (AMD), cataracts and/or other ocular diseases that influence vision.

An 80-year old previously healthy woman with recent onset of binocular macular degeneration presented for clinical psychiatric evaluation of elaborate complex visual hallucinations. In the absence of other organic or psychiatric findings the patient maintained insight into the unreal nature of her visions. As neuroleptic drugs showed no effect, low dose treatment with carbamazepin resulted in disappearance of hallucinations. The phenomenon of Charles-Bonnet-syndrome is discussed as an example of a neuro-psychiatric hallucinosis.

BACKGROUND: Charles Bonnet syndrome (CBS) involves nonthreatening hallucinations in patients who have no neurological and no psychological abnormalities but with significant visual impairment secondary to ocular disease, such as macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. Because of the fear of a mental illness being diagnosed, patients are often reluctant to discuss these hallucinations.
CASE REPORTS: Three cases are presented of patients who experienced CBS caused by decreased vision. Each patient had decreased vision and related visual hallucinations that were consistent with CBS. The f

BACKGROUND: Charles Bonnet syndrome is characterised by complex visual hallucinations in patients who have visual disturbances but no cognitive disorders. The diagnosis is often missed.
CASE DESCRIPTION: An 88-year-old vital woman was referred to the emergency department due to anxiety and restlessness. Her symptoms began after she had started using antipsychotic drugs for visual hallucinations. The patient's visual acuity appeared to be markedly reduced. The antipsychotics were discontinued and the reason behind the patient's symptoms was explained to her: Charles Bonnet syndrome. The anxiet

BACKGROUND: The Charles Bonnet Syndrome (CBS) is characterized by complex visual hallucinations in psychologically normal people. It occurs frequently in elderly, visually handicapped patients.
CASE REPORTS: Three patients are presented whose age ranged between 75 and 85 years old and they had impaired vision because of age-related or myopic macular degeneration. They complained about complex visual hallucinations and all patients were aware of the unreal nature of their hallucinations. A neurological examination of two patients revealed no abnormalities and none of the patients required trea

The article reviews the current literature on Charles Bonnet syndrome (CBS), offers specific criteria to define this syndrome, evaluates its prevalence, analyses the possible associated ophthalmic and sociodemographic factors, suggests future work in this area. Despite the recent interest in CBS in contemporary medical literature, a universal definition of this entity has not been fully established yet. The syndrome is usually characterised by presence of vivid and complex visual hallucinations, which are recognised as unreal and occur in the absence of any other psychiatric symptoms. Therefor

The Charles Bonnet syndrome represents an organic hallucinosis characterized by the appearance of visual hallucinations in otherwise sane elderly people. As a specific organic factor, a reduced visual acuity due to ophthalmologic disorder can be found in the majority of patients. Clinical, psychopathological and pathogenetic aspects of the Charles Bonnet syndrome are discussed by the means of a review of 46 cases reported in the literature (including an own case observation).

Charles Bonnet's syndrome is characterized by the existence of visual hallucinations without psychiatric manifestations or cognitive disorder. Most patients are elderly people with severe visual problems. The objective of this paper is to describe the cases of three patients with this syndrome. The first is an 87 year old woman with bilateral cataract who had visual hallucinations seeing women and faces. The second is another 87 year old woman with advanced myopia and visions of people, animals and objects. The third is a 52 year old woman with atypical pigmentary retinopathy who suffered visu

UNLABELLED: Since its first description in 1760, Charles Bonnet syndrome (CBS) has been reported in many studies. The main characteristics are visual hallucinations, preserved awareness of unreal visions, and absence of psychotic symptoms. CBS can occur with lesions located anywhere along the central visual pathway, from the eye to the calcarine fissure.
OBJECTIVE: To describe patients with CBS and carry out a review of the literature.
METHODS: Six patients with visual hallucinations were evaluated in an outpatient memory clinic between 2001 and 2008, and their clinical characteristics recor

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The aging of the population and the resultant increase in the number of patients with low vision due to age-related macular degeneration and other ocular diseases necessitate an increase in awareness of the Charles Bonnet syndrome among ophthalmic care providers.
RECENT FINDINGS: The clinical features of Charles Bonnet syndrome have been described by several different authors as formed visual hallucinations due to disturbances of the visual system in patients who are otherwise mentally normal. Theories regarding the causes underlying the Charles Bonnet syndrome are multifac

A case of Charles Bonnet syndrome in an elderly patient with occipital lobe lesion is described. Authors have highlighted the complex interplay of various neurobiologicat factors such as cortical blindness, structural brain lesion and epileptiform brain activity in the pathophysiology of this syndrome. The impact on the clinical presentation of brain changes on aging and those following cortical blindness and peripheral visual loss is also discussed.

Charles Bonnet syndrome (CBS) is characterized by the presence of complex visual hallucinations in psychologically healthy but visually impaired people. It has been well described in the adult population but has been less well characterized in children. This report describes CBS in 2 children, both of whom had diagnoses of cone-rod dystrophy. After previously normal visual experience, each underwent rapid visual deterioration between 6 and 8 years old. Formed visual hallucinations were noted shortly after loss of vision. The children's symptoms were identical to those described by adults with

PURPOSE: Chloropsia (green-colored vision) is an extremely uncommon and relatively unstudied clinical finding. We report a case where cerebral chloropsia was the presenting symptom of the Charles Bonnet syndrome.
OBSERVATIONS: A 66-year-old male physician with a previous ocular history of advanced bilateral primary open-angle glaucoma presented with acute, diffuse chloropsia, which he described as "light green and oval-shaped." The patient was not taking any drugs that commonly cause altered color perception and did not have a previously diagnosed psychiatric disorder. Ophthalmic examination

Charles Bonnet syndrome (CBS) is characterized by complex visual hallucinations in otherwise psychologically normal people. Estimates of the prevalence of CBS in different samples vary from a small percentage (around 1%), to a relatively large percentage (about 10%). The purpose of the present study is to determine whether CBS is rare or not. One-thousand ophthalmologic and optometric outpatients at a university hospital were consecutively screened by a questionnaire to identify patients possibly experiencing visual hallucinations. The mean corrected visual acuity in the best eye was 1.1. Thos

The Charles Bonnet syndrome (CBS) derives from complex visual hallucinations. Neurologists, ophthalmologists, and psychiatrists have studied this entity for many years. Despite interest in CBS recently in contemporary American medical literature, investigators have not agreed upon a universal definition of this entity. This article reviews the current literature on CBS and related phenomena, offers specific criteria to define this syndrome, and suggests future work in this area.
